I just restored back to my icloud backup but still seeing around 25gb of extra storage being taken up. This is down from probably 50gb showing in my first transfer of data from old to new iphone.

Hope apple squashes these bugs in the next software update

Went ahead and decided to restore my 13 Pro as a new phone and set everything up manually. After Photos sync'd everything up it is now only taking up 210MB. I'm hoping there won't be much in the way of optimizing over the next day or so but if it stays like this or a very low number, it was worth the time and trouble.

Also havesame problem. On my iPhone 12 Pro Max I was using around 200gb. After transferring everything to 13 pro max, storage usage is suddenly over 500gb 🤦‍♂️

Had this problem with my new 13 Pro (128GB) so I reset as a new phone rather than from backup and it’s now got 80GB free rather than using 80GB like it was before doing this. It’s using more storage than my previous XS (256GB) did which was about 22GB.

Same issue. Glad to see I am not the only one.

iPhone 11 Pro Max to iPhone 13 Pro Max using phone to phone data transfer on Friday. Photos took up ~66GB on the iPhone 13 Pro Max and making the phone storage 126GB used out of 128GB capacity. I thought it might just take a few days to index/optimize, but after 3 days, it's only gone down to ~60GB, and my phone is now indicating 123GB used out of 128GB capacity. I thought with my storage being this low, the phone would have been a lot more aggressive in optimizing the photo library.

For comparison, my iCloud photo library is at 75GB. The photo library on my iPhone 11 Pro Max was at 6GB (and the phone was at 84GB used out of 256GB). The photo library on my iPad Pro is at ~10GB, with the iPad storage at 133GB used out of 256GB.

So somehow on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, despite my phone storage so close to running out, the photo library is still not optimizing properly. I have left it plugged in for most of the time the last few days, and plugged in overnight while I sleep. Hopefully it will sort itself out in a few days.
Another 2 days went by, now the photo library has gone down to ~58GB (i.e. reduced by ~2GB). Phone storage is at 120GB out of 128GB (i.e. still very full). Running iOS 15.1 Public Beta 1.

Also did device transfer from 11 pro to 13 pro and just right now my photos a grew a GB within a day and gradually increasing even though there’s no new pictures or videos being taken, this all happened when I updated to iOS 15 as my iPhone 11 Pro had 512gb and photos was taking up almost 180GB.

Let us know what they say!

No word back just yet - they promised a response within 24 hours so hopefully by lunch today.

My photos has grown from 66.8GB to 69.79GB - a difference of +3GB. Since Monday night, I have taken several photos & videos, but have kept a total of 2mins of video and 12 photos.

I wonder does Recently deleted factor into the phone storage used.

Dunno if there is a bug as my iPhone is saying I have 168GB of storage left but my settings are no different and I have somehow got an increased 18GB added even with taking a few videos since I got the phone

A user in the other thread seems to have some answer from Apple.

TL;DR seems to be that iOS is being more aggressive in keeping photos on device and will tidy it up if storage gets tight.

Well after leaving my phone on the charger overnight, Photos ballooned up to 27GB and system data went up to 16GB. Since I set everything up as new, I'm just going to assume this is how its supposed to be for now and will eventually be addressed in a future software update.

I seem to be losing about 4-5GB overnight. This iOS 15 is extremely upsetting! So many bugs from minor to major ones. One would think that since they managed to release iOS 14 in the middle of pandemic in a much better state, this one would be at least as good.

erasing and restoring from backup seems to have fixed mine. Thanks to this link for the suggestion:

Woke up with another 4 GB of space magically added to photos.
So confused. Is optimize photos storage simply broke right now?

It must be broken at this point. Direct transfer and restore as new and letting everything sync in from iCloud essentially yielded the same result. I don’t have the patience to try again and restore from my iCloud backup knowing that I could just ultimately end up at square one pretty easily.

I have had no problems with the beta..been using it since it came out

Has anyone been able to verify any difference in the iOS 15.1 beta yet?
I tried the iOS 15.1 beta version 2 on the new iPad mini Gen 6, but no change.. Funny thing is, it's only this device acting like this in my household.. Not my iPhone or other iPad. I even set it up without a backup, fresh start. Photos taking up like 40+GB, messages taking up 5GB. I haven't done anything on this iPad yet and my storage is taking up 80%. Everything is in iCloud. Spent a day and a half with a senior rep with Apple who said he was taking this to the engineers. Hopefully they get this fixed because I was really enjoying this iPad lol...

Well, my photos space went down by 2 GB overnight…so that’s good, I guess? In 2-3 months might be back to where I was!

I'm still waiting for Apple Support to revert to me.
