Glad I found this thread! Same issue here. Photos storage rising up to 45+ GB on both my new devices, iPhone 13 Pro and iPad Mini 6, the latter with 64 GB of total storage, thanks to Apple not offering a 128 GB option. Should be fixed via an update though as this is clearly a bug.

My iPhone storage is all over the place. It was 35gb the other week, earlier today it was 14gb and now showing as 10.5gb… my photo library is bigger than that 😂😂

15.0.2 released - did anyone check to see if the gallery issue was fixed? In the description - only the bug with SMS pictures was fixed

Same here but the 12 pro max i transferred from is still fine.. wonder if it’s just the 13’s

It seems to have been fixed with the new update: it went from 118GB to 162GB available overnight.
I updated to 15.0.2 last night. Storage used has gone down a bit overall on my 13 Pro Max but photos is all over the place on my different devices. Photos is using more than 110gb on the 13 Pro Max (used to be around 20gb optimized on my 12 Pro Max) and it's slowly increasing, 50gb on a Mini 6 and 20gb on a 2020 12.9 iPad Pro. All these devices have 256gb storage, the same apps and photos optimized.

I'm beginning to wonder if all the storage calculations are incorrect on all of these.

Another call back from Apple Support.

They had me check my storage again (now at 79.41GB - that's +1.41GB in 24 hours where I've taken 2 photos and one 20 second video).

They had me check the storage on my old XR and update that to iOS 15.0.1 and will call me back on Thursday.

In a week, I'm +11GB, give or take.

Apple Support have asked me to back up my iPhone and do a factory reset on the phone and restore my phone from iCloud.

So I'll try that this evening and see how we go.

So far, so good.

After leaving my phone overnight photos is now taking up a much more reasonable 2.42GB.

It is worth noting that "System Data" is taking up 12GB, but this was similar when I got the phone a couple of weeks ago.

Give it a few days and it will balloon again. It was the exact same for me multiple times.

Since wiping and installing fresh a week or two ago, my 13 Pro 256GB has stabilized at around 25GB of usage for photos... which i'm mostly ok with. Still not the 3GB that my 6s was using!

Yea… I may have spoke too soon. 4GB last night and quickly encroaching on 9GB.
Photos now coming up on 20GB.

Apple Support had another callback for me, wherein I noted the increase in storage again. They are going to escalate to an engineer with another callback due during the week.

Since I last posted my total phone storage used has gone from 100 GB -> 35 GB used yet I have 34 GB of audio alone on my phone and it incorrectly reports 31 GB of photos. This is not even including the apps I have installed or system data. What a train wreck of a software update.

Another call back, another reset - this time from Recovery Mode.

Let's wait and see.

Frustrating to have to keep doing this as it wipes my banking app which requires a call to my bank to get a verification code etc.

15.1 seems to have mostly solved the problem. Photos usage went from 25GB+ to under 10GB in a matter of hours.

I'll check back after 24 hours but it seems my photos size has decreased from 50GB to just 1.5GB overnight! Will be a relief if this is finally resolved... Nice to have 80GB free vs 30.
