For everyone freaking out about the antenna, isn't it quite possible that other prototypes exist that don't have an external antenna? They've just never made it to ebay?

Does it really matter? It's a four year old prototype. Macbooks still don't have built in 3G so why is everyone whining about it?

I'm assuming that this machine has been identified as a Macbook Pro due to the presence of an intel chipset, although that can't be confirmed from the pictures. The overall design and internal configuration are actually nearly identical to a Powerbook.

Have a look at the images on eBay and it's identified as a MacBookPro 3,1.

And the serial number reveals it as Week 7 of 2007

No wonder they did not release it. That antenna is just asking to be broken off and it's ugly to boot.

Ugly or not, which I see nothing ugly about it that is one thing I would love to have. The ipad to me is not as big a deal to have 3G but a laptop like an Air is something I would definite like.

To bad Apple has not brought this out and 3G so you can use it anyone you want. Nice.

MBA 11 with 3G

But I'd love a MBA 11" with 3G and Touchscreen, Apple would sell out overnight, and NEVER be able to keep them in stock, what a way to differentiate the 11 from the 13, it of course would Kill the iPad;)

I would like a 3G in the 11,6 Air but definitively NOT a touchscreen!

I call BS personally, to me, that doesn't look apple to me, an antenna you slide out isn't do it for me.
I see a few things wrong with it:
it slides out, there's a few things with that
You could break it off
It's another moving part, they could wear easily.
I see apple making the antenna built in so it stays smooth case and all.

Well, the images at anandtech and eBay seem to point to the same user account at photobucket. But, how do we know somebody hasn't pulled the urls for the images from the forum and posted a fake eBay sale?

I notice the bandwidth exceeded photos in the forum are NOT on the eBay sale page. (but I've managed to get the missing ones). :D

If they do put 3G in one day I bet the 3G antenna will be like a black strip at the top of the lid like the iPad.

Man that antenna is ugly. I can't understand why Apple made it quite so obvious.

It's reminiscent of all the early phones with large, completely nonfunctional antennas.

It is a prototype. Chances are really good this was no where near a production design but more a modifiding one of their onhand devices to help design it. Looking good was more than likely still a few versions away as they were just trying to get it to work and see what hardware they would need.

When I first glanced at the picture, I thought it was a really nice aftermarket 3G antenna that had been added with cabling to a PCMCIA slot 3G modem.

Interesting to imagine this floating around Cuppertino while a 2G iPhone was in development.

Maybe this is a 2G MacBook Pro.

Also, Steve Jobs said that they were working on a 3G iPhone when he announced it in January 2007.

...Always wanted an Apple Prototype myself, but at the current asking price and the relatively minor differences between this and a shipping MacBook Pro, i'm not sure the price justifies the significance... but it's in the eye of the beholder I suppose.

Exactly what I thought.

Nope...

Looks like a PowerBook G4 prototype if anything, but not a MacBook Pro. All aluminum casing, keyboard, gray plastic around casing, etc. Any further antenna's will be internal or not at all if Steve has anything to say about it.

My point was that for those who seem so distraught that Apple would consider an external antenna, I am sure they were and are also looking at internal antennas. Just because this prototype is the only one that made it to the light of day, doesn't mean it is the only one that exists.

Maybe this is a 2G MacBook Pro.

From the article: "This particular machine dates back to 2007 and is a 15" MacBook Pro Santa Rosa laptop with a 3G antenna, 3G hardware and SIM card slot built in." & "The integrated SIM card slow shown above means Apple had used GSM 3G technology rather than CDMA, allowing for use on AT&T and many other international networks. The 3G card itself is identified as a Dynastream ANT2USB stick according to OS X. In the prototype, Apple integrated the 3G antenna as an extendable antenna along the right side of the lid."

It's 3G. Maybe this assisted in preliminary testing for the iPhone 3G.

Don't think this will happen any time in the close future, albeit these prototypes always look nice

I wonder how the cell phone companies will react if this were to go into production. Even though you can buy a card to do the same thing. Including it in the build will bring more users to the cell network. Maybe AT&T will stop being such a pain when it comes to data.

They'd say cha-ching as they collected the dollars for service.

Much larger laptop manufacturers than Apple include 3G options in their BTO menus, and have for over 5 years.

In 2007 we had 3G modems inserted into slots and windows machines with it built in from factory. Worked fine for many folks here in Sweden, it was just the US that was backwater in 2007 when it came to fast mobile internet connection.

My US Dell Latitude had an EVDO 3G modem when it shipped in June 2006.

It wasn't that the US was a backwater, it was that the previous poster was unaware of what was available outside of the shiny things from Cupertino.

I'd rather just jailbreak my iPhone and tether it with my laptop than spend the extra money on a plan/hardware option. It's not like the plans will be unlimited data. Apple would rather have you buy an iPhone with the tether plan.
