So what? It doesn't mean they're going to do it this time round.

Yeah sure. But you said earlier that this is for developers and that it's impossible that they will release new hardware there.
I just wanted to tell you that they've done it in the past.

*Full disclosure, I am currently holding a long position in AMD.

You might want to rethink that. Apple or no, that company is hosed this time around (it's been close a few times in the past). This, as much as anything might have tipped the scales away from them. Getting caught without a reliable parts supplier is not a good way to run a business.

So why do we need a thinner MBP when you got the Air's?

A lot of this complex rumor speculation is just crazy

Because the Airs are underpowered and lack I/O for pro users, and the MBPs are heavy and hot for highly mobile pro users. I'll get voted down for this, but I run around Manhattan all day, and my MBP feels like lead by lunchtime.

Apple have never had a high end GPU in their laptops. You get less then 50 minutes battery time with a 680M. Gaming is NOT Apples prime market.

+ it costs 1000 dollars more.

The funny thing is that Alienware and other gaming vendors don't offer anything over 1920x1080 screens.
The btterylife isn't the problem. Because the battery life will be used trough the intel hd4000 chip and not the dedicated gfx. the dedicated gfx will be used only trough trough a powercord! So this does not matter. The cost does also dont matter, because it would not cost that much more! The reality is, its more cause of the heat caused by the higher end gfx. Higher end gfx is only good in a fatty gameing laptop, were heat can be cold down.

Maybe it will still be thinner and the optical space can be used for something else. I hope they redesign them. Not that they are bad, I just want to see what Apple can come up with!

Maybe it will just be a 15" MBA after all...

I know, right? Like, totally. Those lucky bastards making $300 a month get to see the new Apple products before American teens! Like, outrageous.

Lol :)

I was just raging that some random person can take a unreleased logic board out of the production plant so easily.. I'm also dreaming of a world that no one sells their kidney to buy an iPad and an iPhone..

:) I am not surprised by anything any more after TSA officials in San Diego stole my laptop and sunglasses out of my suitcase that I put into the hold luggage. If they can smuggle out stuff like that so easily, what's to stop them smuggling stuff into people's bags? So much for airline safety.

My air is absolutely fantastic.

I can see the air getting retina displays and the pro not getting them. The Air is basically Apple's innovation laptop.

The air is the best from the iPad brought to Mac. The retina display should certainly be among the things.

I hope we also end up seeing a 15" Air, then. It would provide a nice sort of balance for those who want the larger screen, but still want an air machine.

EDIT:

Also, here are the specs for the 650M
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gt-650m/specifications

Note that it supports resolutions up to 3840 x 2160

Now, this is nice, but I feel like retina display would severely impact performance :p I hope that is not the case.

Well thats unexpected but typical Apple. So much for all the hyped up rumours.

How does the GT650M compare to the 6750M/6770M?

GT650M on the new MBP is just sad, high end PC laptops already have options for 680M and Radeon 7970M. So much for "forward" thinking company like Apple to not consider incorporating the latest and best GPU for mobile computing.

High end GPU is not just for gaming, it's also benefit other heavy duty creative stuff such as 3D design.

Then go get a PC. I'm sure it will work better.

Steve's blue logic board.

That is VERY interesting to me. Do we get a 4xHDMI + random ports breakout dongle? You know, before the product has been out 6 months to 3 years? Yes it's okay if 3 of the monitors are old skewl resolution.

What is the likelyhood of Thunderbolt being updated to support DP1.2?

I think there is an entire thread of discussion that has been missing. Apple will be making a new "30 pin" connector for iPhone and iPad. One wonders if it will also show up on portamacs as well.

This port will be used on pads for docking to a physical ecosystem of keyboard, display, TV, printer, whatever, some or all of which can also see BT4 or wifi. Multi-homing in a sense.

One trick they could do is to make power and display go through the same physical wire. This would be consistent with a power plug design change. An extra lead or 4.

There have been zero rumors I have read on this, but if one were to assume that a new pad connector would be both smaller and also "insanely great", it might have a few features.

TB/MDP, HDMI, power, USB3/2/1.

It will be interesting to see when/if/how that evolves.

As for which standard, when Apple came out with HDMI ports it was not clear if they even supported audio and which standard. They have other hardware that supports more recent standards, but the software doesn't support it, which may be a QC issue or as Apple has done in the past actually cripple a capability for product positioning purposes.

So, I don't know. :)

It would be very Apple-ly to have a single convergence plug.

Last I heard the Intel chips that have to go in TB ports consume a lot of power. It would be neat to see Apple and Intel come up with a solution to that for use in Mobile Devices.

It would also be nice for Apple to support Display Port 1.2 for the EyeFinity (or what ever everyone else calls it) support.

Three lines of laptops seems really odd (though I suppose it could be a temporary transition... an omelet that requires breaking eggs).

If the MacBook Pros keep the same basic design (as suggested here) then maybe all the NEW machines will be branded as Airs.

in other words, maybe instead of “thin Pros” we’ll get “fat Airs”? The Airs will be as slim as ever on the low end, but new higher-end Airs will have Pro-level power (retina too) while the old Pros (maybe keeping the DVD even) get a spec boost to serve during the rest of this transition.

And then later (6-12 months?) these new Pros get discontinued, and only the high-end Airs remain: same full power, not as thin as the low-end Airs, but still very thin and no DVD. Probably no more 17” if they truly don’t sell. (At which time, I can see “Air" being dropped from the name, and they might all just be “MacBooks”.)

I’d bet that low-end (11-13”) Airs don’t get retina displays yet—but eventually they will.

I could see this happening. Apple likely knows that nuking the MacBook Pro or severely redesigning it by making it more like the Air would ruffle too many feathers... Now I'm not sure if this was always the plan (FCP X may have caused them to learn how NOT to release a new product), or perhaps with Cook in charge he's being less agressive in removing features than Jobs was. Either way, I think the rumor of a gentle transition is true, and I also agree that when that happens, they'll rebrand the whole line as "MacBook".

There is a need in high security organisations, wireless communication (even when AES 256-bit encryted) is still considered less secure than a wired connection, until wireless communication is proven to be as secure as a wired connections there will still be a need for ethernet. Although, having said that, I must stress, the numbers of purchases from highly secure organisations is probably very little.

Not that rare - Try many large companies. Not to mention wifi still suffers serious speed issues in certain circumstances. Not to mention a lot of places, like some hotels, only have wired connections. Removal of a wired connection would be a phenomenally stupid decision. They could partially make up for it with some kind of dock and dongle option but why bother. Apple has abandoned the business market, we all know that.

The dual TB ports I opined. No change in power plug visible, and thus power and display on two sides of device when docked.

You get 90% of the functional benefits with the lowest end unit.

Is that a Kensington slot or a new iPhone connector slot? Or both?

Rocketman

Here's a USB3 to dual display adapter. Use one for each USB3 port for 4 external displays?

That pretty much puts all the rumors of a macbook pro redesign to rest. Looks like the optical drive will continue to be used.

Glad I didn't do anything with my 15" Sandybridge MacBook Pro, I had plans of selling and upgrading but now theres even less incentive to do so.

Hahahaha... how does toe jam taste?
