The iPad mini fits with the iPod mini and the Mac mini. Yes, lower-case "m" in "mini". I guess that's the creativity there. Oh well, it's better than calling it the "iPad 7" or "iPad Book", which would not fit Apple at all.

I kind of expected the "iPod Touch" to be renamed the "iPad Nano". (But it didn't happen)

I think if Apple were to take this 7-inch size seriously, they'd design a third iteration of iOS. I mean, the iPhone keyboard and iPad keyboards are very different from each other, and are ergonomic enough for their forms. Tt would seem very very very lazy of Apple to just shrink down or enlarge a pre-existing UI.

If they do it right, they'll figure out the most ergonomic way of using the 7 inches of space, and I really doubt they'd take the easy way out. Well, I'd really hope they don't, at least.

It's interesting that when you use an iPhone app on the iPad, you can double the size but a full screen video doesn't use the full iPad screen which it could easily do. Similarly the pop-up keyboard uses the iPhone keyboard, rather than the iPad keyboard which it could do easily (and on the iPhone 5 the keyboard slides up but doesn't use the bottom of the screen when running an older iPhone 4 app). Apple usually doesn't want to make the wrong size app run well on the new screen - they want to FORCE developers to make the subtle changes required to have a custom app.

Which is all to say, perhaps if they don't force developers to change their design this time, but DO optimise a better use of a custom iPad Mini keyboard and video etc, it'll be enough to make a significant improvement.

it'll replace the ipad2 and start at $399.

I hadn't even thought about it replacing the iPad2. Makes sense.

I guess my question is how will 163ppi look I can't even remember life pre-retina it may not be so bad on the 7.8 in form factor

Non retina looks bad on small screens as well as large. I just went and looked at the iPod nano in the apple store.. The pixelly non-sharp font is just glaring.

4500mAh for a tablet? Seems quite low to me.. Considering if the iPad Mini/Air comes with the beefy Retina Display.

Is the battery 3 times larger than the iPhone 5?
Doesn't the iPhone 5 come with a "beefy" Retina Display?

It will come with a retina display. I promise. ;)

My point was that Jim Dalrymple's announcement isn't an educated guess and that his information does come from Apple.

Since I can't perfectly prove it you may as well say that the fact that Jim Dalrymple has insider information from Apple is just a rumor or "an educated guess".

I just can't win with your type of reasoning anyway. You can always just pull out "nothing in life is certain" or "everything is relative" to everything and while technically you're right, you're still a party pooper.

The original point was never that Apple officially announced the event, just that it has near 100% chances of happening.
I agree with you totally. The event is very probable. A smart man would say it probably is coming. I'm slowly thinking this too. It's never 100% certain till Apple says it is. And that's the point. People say it "will" happen before the Apple announcement.

Educated guess? No. When Jim Dalrymple says "yep", take it to the bank. He doesn't guess when he says that. He knows more than he is at liberty to discuss.
It's not an official announcement from Apple. And we do not know what he does or does not know. All still speculation. Yep from Tim Cook (or any other Apple senior exec) carries a lot more weight then a yep from Jim Dalrymple. He could be right. And I hope he is. We shall soon see if he is.

I wonder what the 11" Macbook Air does to 13" Air sales?
Macbook Air ≠ iPad though. If the inbetween iPad could co-exist like different sized MBA's that'd be cool. But product cannibalisation always has to be thought of. No point making a inbetween iPad if people who were going to buy a large iPad change to a smaller size. That's less $ is sales. But if the inbetween size gets people who were not in the iPad market to buy an iPad then that's a good thing.

Does anybody else think that the name "iPad Mini" is a bad name? Can't they think of something more creative?

How about "iPad Petite"? Seriously, they have the Mac Mini so it follows they would just call it the iPad Mini. Although I kind of like "iPad Petite" it's alliterative, like Mac Mini. ;)

Well I know you are wrong, perhaps you would care to wager your milk money, car payment, house mortgage or even whole house on it, and one of us will be happier then the other come October 23rd.

Why? Have you lost all of the above in a wager about October 17th?

No I didnt wager on the 17th, because Jim hadn't said it was going to happen, so I knew it likely wasnt going to happen that day. Betting on Dalrymple being correct on an Apple event is only slightly less risky then betting on the Sun rising in the East, sure he could be wrong for the first time, but given the WSJ and others are already doing stories about it, I dont think thats likely.
