Photoshop crashes my MAC

hi I have a MacBook Pro model a1286 OS Sierra 10.12.6. running fine using photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 with no problems. now my computer crashes whenever I try to open a psd file or create new psd. photoshop app within itself launches no problem it just crashes when I try open or create file. Illustrator also crashing my Mac trying to open file. other than that computer runs fine with all apps. I have also tried installing and reinstalling with same results.

This indicates the graphics processor (GPU) in your computer is failing, which is a very common problem on this version of MacBook Pro.

I would agree with the previous poster that the problem is very likely the GPU.

But there's a couple of things that you can try.

Safe mode (since you have a couple of kernel extensions):

The log you have says you haven't applied any Security Updates. These updates includes more than just security-related stuff. That may help but at the time it might also hurt as it may be incompatible with your existing software.

As I said it's likely the GPU - these suggestions are more long shots but worth a try, IMO.

Before you go any further, make sure you have a backup - more than one won't hurt. If you have a Time Machine backup you might want to also consider a clone using something like Carbon Copy Cloner which can be downloaded for free and used on a trial basis for 30 days.

hi & thanks for your input. is the GPU hardware replaceable or is this more of a software issue? would this require a fresh OS install to cure the issue? I do have an external hard drive with another Mac OS installed with my back up of files and the sort.

The GPUs in these computers are all prone to failure. The thread I linked in the second post in the thread will answer your questions about this.

That's irrelevant in this case as the problem is directly related to the GPU hardware. I've used Photoshop CS5 without issue in High Sierra.
