I'm guessing it doesn't do the little fade in thing on the PC side?

I wish they would keep the icons like this ...i much prefer them to previous icons.

Ugh, I hate the temp icons! Haha, I wish they would have released the final icons with the beta, but I guess they haven't perfected them yet. Oh well :(

CS3 is feeling amazing so far. It starts up in 13 seconds on my 2GHz MacBook Pro with 1GB of RAM and I'm very happy with that. (Hopefully it'll scream even louder when I get a Mac Pro and throw a few gigs of RAM in it).

Interesting. I installed it this evening on my C2D Macbook, 2GB Ram and it starts up in 3 or 4 seconds.

Mine is just a Core Duo MBP (I preordered it right after the keynote at MacWorld, so it's one of the very first models.. it was a week 4 of the first production according to the serial #, IIRC). Hearing people saying 3-4 seconds is making me feel depressed that my MBP could be showing its age so soon towards the C2Ds. Maybe having 2GB of RAM instead of 1GB would make the difference since I regularly only have less than 20MB free.

Why do people care so much about how fast it opens? What's important is how well it handles lots of layers, compositing, effects, and filters. I leave photoshop running all the time so the startup speed is irrelevant.

The new palette system is a godsend. Aside from the huge speed increase from going native, I think the new palette system is going to improve productivity a lot, especially when working on a laptop.

Startup speed is a good initial indicator of how well it will run overall when you consider how long it's always taken Photoshop to load in the past. If I'm not seeing load times as fast as others, then I'm betting I'm not seeing the same speed difference in normal operations such as applying layer effects, opening 8MP RAW files, etc.

Regardless, is it a huge improvement over CS2? Absolutely. However, my computer is less than a year old and I want to suck every ounce of power and speed out of it possible.

On my C2D 1GB Ram iMac with Safari (4 tabs), FotoMagico and Word open, it opens in 4 seconds.

Loving the speed of filters and dealing with large .tiffs. Great stuff so far.

Impressive

Using a MacPro 2.66 with 4gb RAM and loads of stuff open:

CS2 - 27 seconds to open

CS3 - 4 seconds

I'm impressed

Not really. There are so many factors that affect startup speed. Someone who has more fonts installed will take longer to startup. Whether or not the app was previously loaded up or not is another. I could go on.

CS3 beta feels snappier overall! In CS2, I felt a slight lag for the basic things like resizing, cropping, saving into jpeg.

The temp icons are kinda growing on me...they kinda stand out in the dock, but not in a bad way.

I think that if the CS3 icons are temporary, then they should really bring back the eye when they really release CS3. The feather thing looks pretty dumb IMO.

BTW...Here is a list of all the icons used for Photoshop in the past:

I always liked PS4 best.

cs3 icons final

All the icons in CS3 are getting this treatment: solid unique colors, plus large letters reminiscent of the periodic table. It takes some time to get used to, but when switching between apps, it makes it a lot easier to identify them quickly. Everything from Photoshop to Fireworks 9 and Dreamweaver will get these icons.

I hope they do stick with these icons, but how do you know for sure it's not just placeholder icons?

I honestly can't seem them using these icons for the final version... the app is about *design* and as far as design goes, those icons are horrible.
I think they are some of the best icons I've seen for a series of apps.
