I called several times, they told me yes before I got the phone.

Trying to currently change it, the lady said it was possible — but told me the phone amount (1,249) would be applied to the bill.. and a dispute would have to take place and it can take months before I get my line reactivated. She said she wouldn’t recommend it cause it can be detrimental to my account and a big hassle.

I accidentally picked next 30 instead of 24 myself when I preordered. Went to the store on Friday and they switched the plan for me after activating my phone. It was super easy and then I had to reactivate my phone by accepting the new terms for 24 months. It can be done in store.
 
I did this as well. Called, chatted, went into the store. Was told all I can do is return the phone within the 14 days and then re-order. They will not change me to the Next Plan, I’m stuck on the 30 month.

You need to go another store or insist that they change it if you are within 14 days. It absolutely can be done. I just did it on Friday. Just need to right rep i guess. When I asked on chat, I was told to cancel my order and place a new order but I decided to roll the dice.
 
I tried it and the lady did it for me. Upon logging into the at&t site, there’s a new phone order placed? Is this normal or a glitch when getting a planned changed?

No I don’t have that issue. Is this order for the phone you currently have? I do still show my phone order on my account when I log in but it’s not for a new phone but the one I’m using now.
Yeah it's for a new phone, after I went into the store and changed my contract. Called the store, the lady who did it came on and said just send the phone back when it comes.
