Coming down off the mountain the other day, I was in the mood for macro. I noticed these bug shells clinging to the odd pine tree. This was a one second exposure with no tripod. :) I just braced it against the tree trunk really steadily.

Cicada? Of course! I should have known. Those buzzing bugs rule the month of August in these parts.

As to holding still, I put the camera against the tree with my left hand supporting it from below, fingers on the tree. To hold the hand steady I leaned my side against my left elbow. To keep my body steady, I leaned my head against the tree with feet wider than shoulder width apart. Simple, really. :)

Nikon D70, Tamron 17-50 lens @17mm, f8, 1/500s, ISO 200, converted from a single RAW file to a tone-mapped HDR image with Photomatix.

That's another beautiful shot, but I want to see more with the DSC-R1!!! :)
