Right ok. I’m not a photographer or anything and I was just at the park taking random pics. Definitely didn’t edit the photo.

I’m disappointed my pictures are pretty bad, my xs took better pictures. I’ve never returned/replaced a phone before it seems like such a pain. It is suppose to be sunny today so I’m going to try getting outside and taking some photos before deciding what to do.

Just wait until y’all get on that 14 life.

Good pics folks. Some neat ones. That low light is

why does 'capture outside the frame' force HEIC mode? Surely you can just capture a couple of jpegs and tag them in a way that allows photos to display them as one?

Trying to avoid HEIC

My issue seems to be the ”normal” camera. It seems like it is blurring the background like a portrait shot in a bad way and then the entire photo ends up looking bad. If I take actual portrait shots they do great.

The first picture is not a portrait shot, but that blurred effect is what I’m talking about it. Inside with people and pets it is making my pics look really bad. Sorry for the dead plant example lol.
Second one is a portrait shot.
Third is a normal shot.
What do you guys think? I feel like my camera should be better.

Plan to add some photos here soon. Thought I would share one thing I noticed this morning. With the Smart HDR I thought that it would take multiple pictures and then ‘merge’ them so that the best exposure for different parts of the image looked the best.

I thought it was doing this during the shot/after the shot.. combining the images. However, I took some test shots this morning into really bad light and could see it doing the ‘math’ prior to the shot. It’s ‘taking’ the images live before you ever press the shutter. It could have always been like this but I never knew/noticed. Today I could see it adjusting the sky in real-time before I ever took the shot. Pretty cool.

that's going to happen with close images because of the focus.

That is strange maybe check your settings because the Pro definitely takes better pictures than the XS

Thought I’d share this shot I took from the Jurong Bird Park in Singapore.

I noticed shooting outside the frame forces the High Efficiency format. If it’s like previous images/files in that format that means no shoot outside the frame for me. Historically, I have not been happy with images in that file format.

So do you recommend not using High Efficiency format? Maybe that could be some of my problem

I would not use it. It compresses the file so it is basically choosing what data to take away from your image. I am not saying shoot Raw as iPhone JPEGs are very nice but I would not use HE if you want the sharpest and most ‘editable’ images.

I am 100% open to being proven wrong on this. Until then, I use Most Compatible.

Side note.. I have tried using 3P cameras (Lightroom, VSCO, etc..) and I always come back to the stock iPhone camera and made edits in those files if needed.

Ok I think I will change up my settings.Storage space isn't an issue for me since I have iCloud storage. I've read mixed things about using JPEGs but I would like to have the best quality photos. Although I really need to buy an actual camera instead of just using my phone. I was thinking about buying ProCam, thus far I've only used the stock camera.

IMO, I would not spend $ on a Camera app. Regarding image quality/file data it is RAW then JPEG then HE. For most people JPEG is best as it makes the edits to the Raw image to show what likely looks best. It leaves enough data for the user to make simple edits. The user has to make ALL the edits to a RAW file.. let the Apple JPEG engine do some of the work for you IMO. HE files are the most compressed/most data tossed so will look the worst and allow the least amount of edits before looking just bad.
