Look at the shadow areas of the Photos above of the Pixel 6 and the IPhone 14Pro……….I much prefer the IPhone version….much less photoshop work I would have to do. Phone photography is meant for the masses….easy enough for the average person with a minimal post processing needed.
That being said, I do shoot with a Sony Alpha A1 when I want to do serious photography but for family pix and leisure photography the IPhone Pro series do a great job.

Upgraded from 12 Pro to 14 Pro.

Honestly, I don’t see much difference in image details/sharpness. Neither in daylight or lowlight. I’d say I see more detail in my 12 Pro lowlight images.

In high contrast situations my 14 Pro overexposes highlights unless I adjust manually (12 Pro does better job automatically). Natural bokeh looks better because of much larger sensor size. And lowlight images do have a bit less noise.

14 Pro pushes ISO higher than 12 Pro in the same lowlight conditions (eg 1000 vs 640/800) with similar default settings, no filters.

In general, I’m not very impressed… I expected more improvement over 12 Pro (didn’t test video because I’m not using it much).

I noticed that indoor photos from my 12 Pro Max have better detail and sharpness, and less compression artifacts than photos from my wife’s 14 Pro. However, that only applies to HEIF and JPEG photos. When I took some RAW 48 MP photos with her 14 Pro, they blew my 12 Pro Max away, so I think the problem is not the camera itself, but that Apple seems to be compressing HEIF (and JPEG) photos too much on the 14 Pro. The HEIF photos coming out of my 12 Pro Max are nearly twice as large as the same photos coming out of the 14 Pro.

Here’s an example. Look at all of the compression artifacts from the 14 Pro HEIF around the ponytail in these photo crops. Even though the 12 Pro Max HEIF photo has more noise, it looks sharper and better than the 14 Pro HEIF IMO, but the 14 Pro 48 MP ProRAW is the best by far.

I just tested this myself. The raw photos look far better. Even if you shoot them at 12 megapixels vs 48. I can see halos caused by over sharpening in the 14 versus the 12 (and 13) pro models.

Pixel 6 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro camera comparison. I still think the Pixel takes better pictures. Google is unmatched when it comes to computational photography and AI in general. Apple can't compete in that arena.

iPhone 14 Pro does a lot better now than the 13 Pro. I still hate the fact that the iPhone/iOS tends to blow out highlights in certain situation such as if the focus point is dark it'll brighten it up but blow out the damn highlights.

Apple needs to work on their computational photography, Google is currently king.

Using the ProCam 8 app in jpeg mode to get 48mp images is working very well. I came across the app on Instagram and I did have it at one point, but quit using it so I deleted it from my iPhone, but now they support the 48 megapixel sensor in JPEG mode without using ProRAW is a very good find. Check out these heavily zoomed in screenshots one is from a 12 megapixel sample and the other is 48 megapixels.

No problem whatsoever. I just hope that moment and Halide will develop their app so it is possible to do the same thing. I’m not sure that the ProCam app has the same quality as the others but I could be wrong. I will have to wait until they update their apps for this phone to find out.

So maybe not a bad idea to shoot raw and then just save as heif or jpg once you check for any edits/cropping?
