Threads like this make me laugh.
With all this talk about the iPhone camera not being very good because it has less pixels than rival products, and then there is this thread.

Some of the photography is stunning. It has been a pleasure scrolling through. 🙂

It does that when the image is too large in portrait I believe to accommodate the picture to the site.

Just look photos at 956 & 965 posts above... the monet effect in the backgrounds is everywhere... apple should fix the noise reduction problem. iPhone 6 is a lot better in macro but when shooting sceneries iPhone 5S camera takes more sharp/clear photos...

It may be the software of the camera app, I use the camera+ I do not believe I get those issues. I also shoot all my photos in 16 x 9.
