Any chance we will see an update with carplay on existing cars I have a 2012 Chevy Equinox with Pioneer sound system.

Not sure why, but appradio 3 cannot do anything with iTunes radion while the NEX models can put iTunes Radio stations in playlists. I think this might be an indicator that appradio 3 while not be able to do carplay.
The AVH-4000NEX is by far the best deal of the models Pioneer will upgrade to carplay. It's a AVIC-7000NEX without the nav essentially. I'm upgrading to that via $540 on Amazon and will sell my appradio on eBay.

I also like the 4000 because it's the only NEX with the DVD player. It does not have the capacitive screen however. Is that a big deal?

My current car is over 10 years old, so excuse my question. Since when were we able to do firmware updates to car stereos? Is it done over wifi or cell or do you need to take it into a shop to have the firmware upgraded?

I think this is awesome that means stereos do not become obsolete as fast, but I am interested in the logistics of this.

I looked up the manual for the 4000, it's pretty straightforward.
[Updating Firmware CAUTION
The only USB port that supports the firmware update is USB port 1.
Never turn this product off, eject the SD memory card or disconnect the USB storage device while the firmware is being updated.
You can only update the firmware when the vehicle is stopped and the parking brake is engaged.
1 Download the firmware update files.
2 Connect a blank (formatted) SD memory card or USB storage device to your computer, and then locate the correct update file and copy it onto the SD memory card or USB storage device.]

And they have a whole downloads page for updates. http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Support/Downloads

Most new Cars have volume buttons in the steering wheel.
You know, it's funny, even in vehicles I've driven that haven audio controls on the steering wheel, I still reach for the knob (if there is one) to adjust the volume--it's just a far faster, easier tool for the job nine times out of ten. Particularly if there was an abruptly loud song.

Controls for anything other than skipping tracks or start and stop on the wheel never made much sense to me--at some point it's just as bad fiddling with buttons on the wheel as it is fiddling with them on the radio.

I also like the 4000 because it's the only NEX with the DVD player. It does not have the capacitive screen however. Is that a big deal?

I have had an appradio 3 for a year now. I assume the touchscreen tech used is the same as the 4000. While it certainly isn't capacitive touch, it works well. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for it. Having a 7" screen is much more important to me.

You have a 2 yr old model & would trade it in just for CarPlay?

Absolutely!

I am actually thinking of buying a Focus ( I assume you will approve ) but holding to see the news around CarPlay support. Given we haggle for $100 in a $18000 car ;), I do not want to spend on after market CP if I can avoid it.

Ford, get on CP. You will have one extra buyer right now.

I love my Focus but look at the 2014 Honda Civic EX or EX-L...all the Apple CarPlay press photos are in that car (even though it isn't officially supported yet, to my knowledge).
