This is not necessary and the lag kills it. I have a 5.5 inch iPhone now so the screen size is irrelevant on this. Make a car radio that docks your phone in landscape mode and has a car mode and that would make more sense for a good price. Sony did this for android phones and i think iOS might work with it too but it connect wirelessly i think and car play is not activated. $600 for a laggy device is not acceptable, a $399 or less iPad wouldn't even lag like that for half the price. RAM is so cheap now and they either didnt use enough or used an old slow processor. With hey siri command and a 5.5 inch iPhone this is worthless

I'm not defending the lag - I think at this day and age it is unacceptable. However, show me a $399 iPad that can completely control your cars audio system. If you want to double sided tape an iPad to your dash, well, do it. But don't expect it to look pretty. If you want to integrate your iPad to your dash with a custom fit, expect to pay a whole lot more $ than replacing a head unit compatible with CarPlay.

If you want to integrate CarPlay in a car that doesn't support it, and do it elegantly, then buying one of Pioneer's higher-end units will be most likely the best and cheapest option. Go talk to some people that custom fabricate car audio equipment and see how much they charge per hour and then do the math.

FYI, while there is not a simple antenna, you can use an external gps unit (wired or Bluetooth) with any iOS device. Look up Bad Elf Gps units, they work great for marine/flying/driving, even with wifi only devices.
True, but then, you don't need a cable for that either, since there are GPS receivers with Bluetooth. ;) No idea if external receivers are fully integrated with Apple's location services though.

With only about a half-inch on the screen of my 6 Plus, I'll save myself 570 dollars, buy a top-of-the-line dash mount and install a higher-quality, much, much more responsive and functional head unit in the form of my iPhone. Problem solved.

Your iPhone 6+ has an FM radio and an amp that can drive a full set of speakers? Neat.

How did apple fit a 200W amp into a 7mm thin case?

Is that why they're bending?

Where did they put the connector for the antenna? Do you need an adaptor to connect it or does it just duct tape on or something?

I don't want to seem argumentative here but, a mounted cell phone next to my radio is, well, just like operating the radio. I am unaware that it is illegal anywhere to operate a radio in the car or make adjustments to it. Same would go for any dash mounted device. As long as it is 'hands free' you are good to go in every state in the country thus far.

Because it is not very practical due to the cable requirement, and doesn't do much that you can't also get by simply dashmounting your phone. Also, it seems the car makers are in no hurry to adopt it.
Yes, it's a nice vision, but the current implementation doesn't live up to the promise IMO.

It literally just came out. Give the tech some time to mature and evolve before claiming it's dead. Also, OEM's are going to charge you for a navigation anyway, it might as well have Carplay built in.

I don't see the point of that particular model shown. My iphone 6 plus screen is seems bigger than that and is mounted to my dash right next to my radio. I can just do all of that on the phone, what's the point of the screen mirroring?

In this case I think carplay as a concept is probably not for you, as you said you can just use your phone. It's for people who want to have it intergraded into their car and not fiddle around with mounting their phone etc. you can achieve the same thing with more cables , a dock, power supply to your phone and audio in to your current sound system ;)

----------

For the people that are saying to just use thier iPhone plus, the ones who are going to buy this want a seamless integration with their car. Last thing you want in your high end vehicle is a iPhone strapped or stuck to the windscreen, or however you plan to mount it.

Also if you live in a country were it gets very hot, iPhone plus sun results in the iPhone shutting down, they overheat. I know cause my iPhone 4 and 5 gps setup would do that ;) and I would say, wtf do I need a gps unit , I have an iPhone :)

To the people saying Pioneer should have come up with a solution before now, they did - AppRadio was introduced way back when the iPhone 4 came out. Their biggest hurdle has always been Apple, first no direct control or screen mirroring so they had to work with every app maker to create compatibility. Then when Apple moved to the lightning connector, they dropped analog video out so Pioneer had to create other work arounds for the iPhone 5 and up.

To those saying that 800x480 isn't enough. This isn't your phone that you hold up to your face, its a 6 or 7 inch screen that is likely 3 or 4 feet away from your eyes. There isn't any need for more resolution at this time.

It's not wireless because of battery life and lag. You think you see lag now with a wired connection? Try it over bluetooth or some ad-hoc airplay wi-fi. The iPhone is producing the image that you see on the AppRadio. I find it funny that people that complain they have to pull their phone out of their pocket to plug it in to the AppRadio find that an acceptable alternative to pull their phone out of their pocket and mount it to a clip in the car.

Clipping an iPhone 6+ to an air vent is not the same. An iPhone has no onboard amp, no tuner, no video input for backup cameras., no steering wheel controls. The interface is too small to use while driving, especially if it is mounted. Notice how large the play/skip/map buttons are on the AppRadio? Because when you are reaching over to the dash you need a larger target. Also, in many states, just having your phone visible to the driver is grounds for pulling you over. It doesn't matter whether you were using GPS or sending a text. I don't agree with it, but do you want to get hassled by the cops because you were getting directions to grandmas house?

This is the most boring and unappealing device i have ever seen from Apple and pioneer. The UI should had more gestures (and more third party apps). I am happy with the stock navigation screen i have in my 370z, however I am worried about this bluetooth in iOS 8.

While the interface layout is familiar and better than car manufacturers' systems, the Pioneer system is slow and laggy. Look at the delay when scrolling. Look at the jerkiness of the animations (like sliding panels). Pioneer uses a GPU that can't keep up with a phone. Doesn't Apple force performance standards on these manufacturers before allowing them to use CarPlay?

I updated the firmware on my 8000nex and actually the lag is a bit worse than what you see in the videos (surprise!). However, it's not terrible and it's still very useful.

It's a great interface for your phone and because it's able to pull so much data from your phone, maps is much nicer to use as well (pulling addresses from email and text messages). Being on the phone with somebody then asking them to text you the directions then being able to immediately convert that to a route in Maps is worth the price of admission.

As long as Apple is open with who they let make CarPlay apps and don't make it closed like AppleTV it should bring in a whole slew of new things for the car. I'm excited to see what pops up.

Or.....
You can just dock your iPad on your centre console like i have, Bluetooth connect it to your head unit and BOOM.... and you have access to alls, text, music, satnav...the whole lot

Does the 'Hey Siri' feature work while the phone is connected to CarPlay or do you have to use the touch screen to activate Siri?
