Did anyone else see the promo shot of Keira with the oriental getup and shiny sword and think they'd she'd accidentally wandered out of a Lord of the Rings audition and into the Pirates studios? Maybe it looks less ludicrous in the movie, but it definitely struck me as odd on the cover of Empire...

It'll make sense when you see the movie. I did wonder the same thing when I first saw the promo shots.

I was a big fan of the first but this one wasn't really good at all. Damn confusing and long. I was hoping this one would be better than the second, but it's the worst out of the 3.

dang!

friends are "forcing" me to watch it with them. and i had this funny feeling that it will be an average film. i haven't seen spiderman 3 and i also had this feeling about that film (how was it anyway?).

come to think of it. i haven't seen shrek 3 either...

so my question is, is it worth the money?

Lol! I can count the number of films I've seen where I thought the money was well spent on one hand. Best dollar spent in a theatre? I saw The Good, The Bad and The Ugly when it first came out for something like 2 bucks.

Just saw it. I found mildly entertaining and had some good CG. The plot? OMG, someone must of ran the script through a paper shredder 3 times then taped it back together. Calling it confusing is an understatement.

Just saw it. Sigh. Reminds me of why I no longer pay $10 to sit in small cramped chairs surrounded by rude people while holding my bladder.

And Hollywood wonders why movie attendance is down.

Saw both Shrek 3 and Pirates 3 this weekend. I really enjoyed both, Pirates more than Shrek. I thought Pirates was well done and didnt play like the Spiderman 3, where it just seem to keep pushing out more than it really had. Pirates 3 had a story and brought closure on a lot of things, Spiderman just milked what it could it seemed like. Shrek 3 could have used more hidden adult humor I thought, but other than that, a good movie.

Box-office treasure is a little harder to come by on the new voyage of "Pirates of the Caribbean." The third installment in the Walt Disney Co. franchise, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," hauled in $112.5 million from Friday to Sunday, well below last summer's $135.6 million opening weekend for its predecessor, "Dead Man's Chest."

"At World's End" had the fifth-biggest three-day opening ever, with this month's "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million) and "Shrek the Third" ($121.6 million) both outperforming it.

I am a little surprised by this, but only a little.

The "suckage" may have something to do with it, although when did bad movies ever stop millions of people from going to see them if they're hyped enough by advertisers??

Exactly! Not many movies with uber-budgets appeal to me at all (well, okay, there were about 3 movies I wanted to see in theaters in early December, but that's an exception!). Contrary to stereotypes about other members of my gender, explosions do not get me into movies. Fast cars might, but only if they're good cars driven well (Le Mans, Grand Prix vs. FnF, gone in 60 seconds remake).
Next Miyazaki movie comes out next year. :(

I saw Pirates 3 yesterday, and I have to say, I *really* liked it.

Yes, it was a little too long, and yes there were bits here and there that were a little drawn out, but overall I was very entertained throughout the movie. It can be a bit difficult to remember who's backstabbing whom and all that, but if you ask me, that's part of the fun. I thought the movie did a good job of trickling out pieces of information, and let's not forget Barbosa (who made the movie, IMO).

All-in-all, well worth my $6, and definitely warrants a repeat viewing (for the right reasons). So there's my $0.02 on the movie :)

Pirates 2 and 3 work better when viewed as a unit, but neither one is great, on the whole. Conceptually brilliant, but the end result is too muddled. The third movie benefits greatly from the return of Geoffrey Rush - his chemistry with Depp is excellent, and the sequences in Davy Jones' Locker have strong whiffs of Terry Gilliam, which is a good thing.

Ha. true. But it's stopping me a bit. Most of the films (2-3) I've seen lately have been foreign or more indie films. Better time/money spent. I think certain people like myself will realize that it's no longer worth it going to the movie theaters.

I, along with some friends, prefer to wait a few extra months (3), rent it on DVD from redbox or netflix and watch it in comfort on a nice big screen tv.

Epochblue, $6 is a steal. In Boston, it's about $10 on average for an evening show, maybe $8 or $9 if you have a student discount or if you watch a matinee.

I agree. Except for the Calypso fx (which I thought was poorly rendered compared to the rest of the movie), I found it very entertaining. I didn't find it confusing at all, especially if, as gloss posts, you really remember what Tia Doma says in Pirates 2.
'Glad I stayed to the very very, truly very end.....

I am a little surprised by this, but only a little.

It all depends on how you look at it. Pirates did not capture the weekend US or NA records, but it did capture the international opening record without even opening in China or India, as well as the Memorial Day weekend record. So it's hardly a flop.

Ahhh, well, I thought it was entertaining. Not life changing. But who in their right mind expected it to be? It was just a fun summer movie.

I actually quite liked the movie. I thought that the first Pirates was one of the better movies I have ever seen (not one of the best, one of the better). I thought the second Pirates was one of the woeste movies I have ver seen- way too drawn out, pointless, way, way, way to much garbage CG work.

The third Prates I thought was damn good. It reminded me and felt a lot like the first Pirates. It was too long, but I thought it was great- and I did laugh quite a bit. Took the parents with me too see it (a nice day with the folks, always a good time) and they enjoyed it as well.

My wife, our eight year old and I went to see it yesterday. We all liked it. I agree with many of the statements on this thread already: the white wigs were confusing, the various plots were confusing but fun, it was a bit drawn out. Keith Richards' part was small, but very cool.

I really thought the end was left open for another movie. Unless, you think it was just the same pattern of Sparrow losing his ship and going off to find it.

i found it really entertaining as well.. not as comical as the second one (do i have to remind anyone of the scene with the stick or the wheel ? i guess not) and generally more grittier than the other two (especially the beginning)

i find this movie will get better over the years.. there is simply so much going on, on the screen that it warrants more views, quite a few scenes to remember

oh and mad props for more scenes involving the little monkey and the bird ,i especially loved those shots

and rush playing with depp together was great as well

for the ending: i liked how they closed the chapters on some characters and how they kept them open on others .. after all it makes a great ending

personally i wouldn't mind going into an 4th movie 3-4 years from now

edit: and comparing them to the spiderman movies: just don't ... if i had spent 5 bucks on spiderman 1 or 2 i would have been pissed... those movies are only good if you compare them to trash like hulk or daredevil

Yeah, you're right about that. When I watch POTC 1 or 2, I feel like I'm watching real movies. With Spiderman and other movies, I feel like a hand is reaching into my pocket and grabbing $10 (US dollars) even though I only want to pay $3 or 4. I wuz robbed!! LOLZERKAKES!!
