While, I think 75% brightness is far to high. It still appears your battery is faulty. I'd def have em replace it. But I'd also at least keep my brightness on 50%. Or so.

Brightness can effect the battery quite a bit.

Agreed, plus according to OP it seems like they have pushed email enabled. If that if pushing every 15 minutes, there is no wonder why the battery is dropping so quickly. I get a good 8 hours of usage a day, of texting and some web browsing on 3G, but if I turn on push email for the day and use Navigon or even Maps, thats cut down to 4.5-5. Especially with brightness on that high. Mines on 50% max.

Don't say iphone 4 battery. Say my iphone 4 battery. My iphone battery is much much better than any smart phones I have ever used.

Full brightness all the time.

So almost half your battery is gone with just 2 hours of usage?! That's awful lol

Your on track for 4+ usage hours.

Yep. Brightness is a huge factor. Anyone wanting to improve battery life, turn it below 50%. If your indoors, it's PLENTY bright enough.

That was implied. It's clear to me that I'm in the minority here with my issues. Sorry if I offended you somehow.

I have searched and could not find anything.

Can someone point to a FAQ or thread of how to post pics (like screenshots) on here without using photobucket or something else?

I have uploaded the screenshot in the "upload file" part of the Guides page, but what now?

OP. Since your genius appointment is later today. Try lowering the brightness to sub 50%. And also I would have my mail set to manual. But if you must push, I'd do it every 30-45 min.

I would try those things, and I'll bet you see a dramatic increase in battery life.

I use the photobucket app. I'm not sure how to do it without that app. But it's really simple. Takes a few seconds.

On a new post just scroll below the text input pane and hit the Manage Attachments button in the Additional Options section.

[edit] Oh, did you mean directly from the iPhone? I didn't, I emailed the pictures to myself first and then uploaded to my post.

Thanks, I'll give that a try right now. These settings are started at 79%. I'll post again right before I leave and update what my percentage is and under what kind of use.

Brightness at exactly 50%. Push disabled; fetch set to 30 minutes.

Not mine. I can get a day and a half with no charge. My old wackberry wouldn't last an entire work shift (9+ hours).

My e-mail settings are on push too.

I guess you mean "fetch", you can't schedule "push" since the whole idea is that the server "push" it when the email arrive.

(sorry, minor detail I am on my break and wanted to point something out)

That's what I ment :p I'm still waking up ha

Cool. I look forward to the results of our test :)

Just from my experience, Yesterday I saw mine drop SUPER fast and then i realized that my push was syncing over 22 folders instead of just the INBOX. I had set it so i could access most of my archived emails... I lost quite a bit of battery that way.

Foursquare runs in the background and drains the battery using the location services, i uninstalled it to be safe and it made a huge diff. 8-9hrs vs 5-6 hrs usage time.

Turned off all notifications from all programs.
Brightness set AUTO at about 20%
Location services only for certain programs, left on.
WIFI on.

That brought my battery life up to 9 hrs.

Yep. Mail, notifications, brightness etc can make the difference from 4 hours of usage up to 10.

My battery's better than that, but I'm definitely not impressed with it. If you set up as a new phone do you lose your saved texts?

My phone was giving me excellent battery life, usually lasting a couple of days between charges.

But yesterday that all changed.

Charged it to 100% and left for work at 8am. I was so busy at work that I literally did not use it at all before leaving work at 7pm. I went to text my wife and saw I only had 4% left.

Got home and recharged to 100% and then used it pretty heavily (web surfing, games, videos) for 3 hours or so and it still said 100% then dropped instantly to 70%.

The funny thing is that when I looked at my usage there were no figures, no stand by time, no usage, nothing.

This morning I again left for work at 8am with 100% charge, without using it at all in the car, I was at 84% when I got to work at 9am.

I've had it in airplane mode most of the day and havene't been online with it and I now have 45%. My usage figures show 1hr 2min of usage and 9hrs 40mins standby.

Looks like my battery is failing and I'll be at the Apple Store this weekend!

ps I have rebooted a couple of times to see if that fixes it, but it doesn't. Tonight I'll back it up and try setting it up as a new phone and see if that helps.

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

Cheers!

check your email push settings, this could affect battery life.. and i would also close all the apps in the tray.. one may not have closed properly..

This is my question too... When I first got my iP4 I restored it from a backup from my 3GS - The phone got HORRIBLE battery life. I then restored and setup as a new phone and it was fine. You may want to give that a shot if you did not setup as new.

yeah thats one thing also to try..

How Does Mine Compare?

I've been wondering about my battery, too. It's nowhere near as good as I was getting with my 3GS. Attached are my usage stats since 4:30 this morning. The usage was about an hour of web stuff on WiFi and 25 minutes of it over 3G. I've also begun turning everything off except whatever I'm using at the time. So these stats were with everything off except WiFi, then WiFi off and 3G turned on. Brightness is around 50% and auto turned on.

I find, as others do, that killing the Mail app in the task switcher helps a lot, and of course, turning off push and fetch.

Opinions on my battery? I'd hate to exchange this phone, everything is working well, and I feel kinda blessed for that fact.

Your battery looks fine to me. I'd be interested in how it does with more usage. Like when your less then 20% battery life

I've force-drained it twice since I bought the phone on the 18th, but I wasn't awake to observe sub-20% performance. I've noticed that the performance has been overall improving the longer I've had the phone, which was the case with all my earlier iPhones, as well, but I've done so much tinkering with settings that I'm not sure that's conclusive. It also seems like this phone is kinda the opposite of my car: It doesn't do as well between full and half as it does below half.

Thanks for the input.

I uninstalled skype it seemed to be shortening my battery life by quite a bit, I almost couldnt las a day. and it goes 2 days without?

Very possible. Skype runs in the background once you've signed in. You didn't have to uninstall it, could just have ended the task in the multitasking pane or signed out from within the app.

I guess I'll exercise my genius appointment later today and try to get an exchange. Are they going to give me any problems trying to exchange it? Should I prepare something good to say?

Until then I'm open to trying any suggestions you guys might have to improve the situation.
i had similar usage as you. they ran their diagnostics and they told me i was getting about 5.5hrs of usage which falls within their "normal" allowance, and would not give me a return.

i asked him .."so my only option is to deal with it or return it?", which he said pretty much. i said ok, and returned a week later for a return. i had to mail it back to apple, and now i'm just waiting for my upgrade eligibility to be reset so i can get a new phone.

give it a shot though. i've read other posts on here where they were told the same thing, but replaced their phone anyways. it all depends on the "genius" you get.

Why do you need or expect more than 5-6 hours???

yep, it does depend on the "genius"

But honestly, his battery may be fine. His brightness settings was FAR to high and his mail was being fetched every 15 min.

That has alot to do with it im sure. So its very possible that his battery is good and he just needs to tweak his settings to get optimal performance.
