I'm at one hour of usage and 17 hours of standby and I'm sitting at 84 percent.

Does that seem okay?

Wow, I can't stress enough about how big a battery drainer PUSH is. I had an exchange and mobileme on PUSH all week and I'd get maybe 6-7 hours of usage on a full charge, but I turned it off today to see how it is.

So far, I am at 1h44m of usage and 2h15m of standby and I have 88% left. With push email on 2 accounts, I'd hit 2h of usage when I had 75% or so left.

So allow me to update everyone.

I went to the Apple store the other day where they tested my battery. Their "testing" is some interesting looking custom software that gets a report from the iPhone when plugged in and tells the "genius" that the battery is either OK or bad. Nothing more, nothing less. My battery turned out "OK" and he argued with me for a while about the millions of possible causes for poor battery life. No matter, at that point I was already somewhat convinced that push email was what was dragging my battery down so I was accepting. However, I had a small cosmetic blemish and for that they exchanged my iPhone. So I went from a week 30 to a week 27 iPhone that didn't have 4.0.1 installed.

I figured ok, I can try this out and see how it works out. Got home, synced and charged to 100%. Ran it all the way down to zero in order to do a complete cycle with the battery. Attached is a screenshot of my usage screen right before it shut down on me (it says "iPhone has been plugged in since last charge" but that was me just quickly syncing new podcasts this morning, didn't have it plugged in for long). This was with the same settings I had before, push email on two accounts and fetch (15) on another. Not really sure, no better and no worse I suppose which leaves me almost convinced that any battery can be dragged down when using push. I just finished charging again to 100% and I'll see how this cycle goes. The next cycle I'll do with push turned off and then I can really compare.

I'll post all that here when I get it. Hopefully it helps some people. If you think you have a bad battery go to the Apple store and have them do their quick test. Or try turning off push email (set it to fetch every 15 minutes) and I think you'll see massive improvements.

See my post above. I get better battery life than that with push email on, but I'm going to hit something like 5 hours of usage before I hit 50% at this rate. My current usage is:

3h21m
6h01m standby with 71% on the battery.

i forgot to take a screen shot but a few days ago, my phone had a usage time of 6.5hrs and a standby time of 2 days 4hrs and i think it had like 5% batt left before i plugged it in. i did normal (email, text, instant messages) to heavy usage (games, music, etc.).

I've found that turning off Push and location services, and leaving the screen as dim as I can without having sight problems has helped my battery life immensely. ^_^

I keep everything on (push, location, wifi) and am getting great battery. The point I'm trying to make is that one should use their phone how it was meant to be used! What's the point of this superphone when all these features are disabled? This post is mainly geared towards apple, and if they're not replacing/ fixing them, then what gives?!

anyway, good luck guys, hope you get the batteries sorted out

To everyone else with battery issues. I suggest when you're browsing in bed late night and you no longer wish to be disturbed by phone calls or texts until the morning... put your phone on airplane mode. I find browsing on airplane mode with Wi-Fi on with 4 or more apps drains battery MUCH less. This could extend your usage by more than two hours.

Great point. That's an excellent idea.

I have been responding to posts like this for weeks and my answer is still the same: if your battery life sucks, you battery is probably bad! I do not turn off bluetooth or wifi EVER. Push is on for every 15 minutes and I travel through areas (by car) that are predominately EDGE and still get close to 3 days on a single charge! If you are not getting these kinds of results without turning everything off, your battery is probably at fault. My first iPhone (from Launch Day) tested 'good' on Apple's 'diagnostics,' but the Genius replaced it anyway since it would drop 50% charge even when powered off.

Oh BTW, I turn my iPhone off at night (usually around 11pm) and on again around 5AM during the week and 8-9AM on weekends.

couldn't help but ask, is my battery ok? you guys are getting phenomenal usage! I feel like I am getting the same usage as my 3Gs did..

can anyone explain auto brightness? I have heard different opinions on its effect on the battery. I can't really tell if my battery life is normal or not. But like others, this thread is making me paranoid

To all the peeps who continue to worry about their battery life... READ THE THREAD! Or read the original post your battery usage stats thread! People have left helpful hints or tips to extend battery life so don't continue to ask blindly and post a screenshot of your usage. Remember the benchmark is 5.5 Hours of Usage. So if you're getting at least 5.5 hours, fine but just know you can extend it to as much as 9 hours of regular Usage.

Also another thing to note... apps or games that are very graphic intensive drain battery like leeches. 3D games always drain a lot of battery.

That sucks! I find my iP4 has awesome battery life. My best has been 7:15 hours of usage with 2.5 days of standby leaving it at 5%. Currently I'm at 4 hours of usage and 12 of standby at 36% but half of that usage is facetime.

How bout location? Is that on aswell? That's what's hurting the 3GS battery the most

Went to sleep last night with 57% battery, woke up 8 hours later on 36%. Didn't get any emails (had push on though) so I have no idea why it ran down like that. This is a replacement phone I got yesterday though, my one before was fine.

Sorry for the stupid question.

If you set up your IP4 as new like a couple of you are suggesting, do you then have to re-enter all of your contacts and download all the apps again?

Thanks
Cory

What you should do is sync & back up your phone first, then restore as new. Once you've done that, you can re-add your apps back onto your phone. I sync my contacts from yahoo, but you can save & sync them from a number of places, such as outlook, google, yahoo, etc.

Im currently at 15% with
usage 1 hr, 43 mins
standyby 1 Day, 5hrs

wifi on
bluetooth off
3G off
Location services off
email fetch evey 1 hr

just waiting for battery to get to about 5% or less then will repost with screen shot.

I don't know how people are getting 3 days standby with about 7 hrs of usage.

That's definitely not good. Did you restore from a backup? Maybe try restoring as new and test without putting any apps on the phone.

I have had my iphone 4 replaced about 4 or 5 times now and have honestly lost count.

I set up the previous phone as new but it did not make any difference. Im currently using this model from the previous backup of the last iphone which was set up new.

Its just a pain setting up as new and then losing all my texts and settings only to make no difference to the battery usage

Never had any of this with my 3gs. I used to go 3 days without charging

Ever heard of the silent switch? :p That is for when you don't want to get disturbed while sleeping. Airplane mode will of course improve your battery standby time but you won't see any missed calls when you wake up and also all SMSs will be delayed.

This is the best i've got out the i4 so far..

battery.jpg

Brightness: About 55% (plus auto on)
Notifications: On
Email: Hourly fetch
Wifi: On
Location Services: On
BlueTooth: Off (Only had it on for 20mins during a particular drive)
3G: Mostly off... Dont live or work in a 3G area, so not worth leaving on.

Which other settings should i list?

Mostly using in that time SMS, Safari, Whatsapp, fb, walkmeter, iPod, etc.

Didn't watch any videos, i dont stream anything, i consider myself a light user of the phone.

To be fair the last hour on that particular run was just listening to music.

I think the battery life has been great so far, much much better than the 3 3GS's i went through (they all had shocking batteries) and slightly better than my old faithful 3G (and i'd still get more use out of that than the 3GS, lol).

Good work apple, i'm a happy customer, can't wait ti see what the 5 brings to the table :)
