If you want a warranty that covers spills, drops, and almost anything else you can think of buy a Dell with complete care.
they have fixed everything I have called in about which includes the laptop falling in a snow bank, a coffee spilled right over the keyboard thanks to a moron tripping over his bag, falling out of the computer bag way too much cran and vodka, falling off a table due to my parrot wanting some attention (she got it) and so on.
Best $249 I have spent.
I would love an apple but having the insurance of next day (including weekends) on site repairs is the primary reason I haven't switched.
A mac mini might be in the future.

I take care of my stuff so I guess I don't need this kind of protection. Its called responsibility.

You're being really unreasonable here.
You (or your sister, they don't care) dropped the computer. The impact was enough to make that dent or crack or whatever that is.
The bluetooth is broken.
You bring it in to the store, claiming that the bluetooth is broken and that the computer was dropped the day before.
They're doing a favor by fixing it to you for free.
Next time prioritize. If this is pissing you off that much then you should have gone earlier.

Dam I was looking for that word; responsibility.
Do you carry car insurance?
How is buying a plan for a laptop any different than car insurance?
Accidents happen regardless of how "responsible" or how well you care for your car.

Seriously? You are that short sighted to see the difference? Insurance on VEHICLES is required because A) it is the law, and 2) it covers hospital/medical bills. Who would pay for that if insurance on vehicles was simply optional? An accident happens involving a computer, lives aren't put at risk. You don't need to call an ambulance, detour traffic, risk lives to save lives, see dismembered humans/victims, etc when there's an accident with a computer.

*Raises hand
lol, I would still pay for insurance. We had a really bad storm here for about a week last december, and my car was totaled due to some acehole who thought he was invincible in his new overpriced waste of money Tahoe. Rear ended me, sucked. Glad I had insurance.

Joke is on him, as he bought a new chevy!! :)

Extended warranties are essentially insurance though. But as there's no "State Mandated Minimum Coverage" as is with auto insurance, so you must read the fine print to see what is/not covered.

There's other sources for such coverage for computers as well, and in some cases, may be included if the product was purchased on a credit card. ;) Worth checking your card out, as it can be handy (also have to read the fine print, as it varies here too). No idea on cost if it has to be purchased separately, as I've not done it after the purchase was made.

near sighted not short sited.

So I pay $2000 for a computer and I purchase a plan for $249 to fully cover it for 4 years (how much is apple care?) and I use it due to an incident and I pay nothing.
Here the OP has an issue with an internal device failing and because there is external damage, they will have to pay for it out of pocket. how much?
With the cosmetic damage by the drive, I really don't think Apple will be offering a free fix if that should fail.
Car insurance to me is two fold. If I cause damage or if someone causes I am covered for the most part, more so than if I don't have any insurance.
In todays sue happy culture I would not want to be caught without insurance. How much do you think someone will sue you for if you should be involved in an accident which causes dismemberment or God forbid death?
I can't stand paying for car insurance but I think not having carries a little more risk. For my laptop its more of a convenience and protection to my wallet For example the blu-ray drive, keyboard, ram and hard drive were destroyed by the cup of coffee. I am not sure what the out of pocket expense would have been but I am sure it would have been more than $249.
Laptops are exposed to so may different environments where others can have an impact on its wel being. The accidental drop while moving it, a passer byer tripping and accidentally spilling their coffee on it, or slipping on ice and not able to overcome the effects of gravity its nice to know the machine will be fixed.

Yeah, we should be able to kill and maim strangers accidentally with a simple "Sorry dude." and get on with our lives. Who cares it was your family's only source of income? Not my problem kids, have a nice life.

Either one is correct.

AppleCare is 3 years, including the one year of warranty that comes with the computer.

With the cosmetic damage by the drive, I really don't think Apple will be offering a free fix if that should fail.

Cosmetic damage is when you accidentally scratch the case pulling it out of your bag. Dropping the computer so that there is a dent in the case is not cosmetic.

What you want is insurance, not warranty. Warranty covers problems that are Apple's fault, insurance covers problems that are your fault. You expect AppleCare to be both. The problem is that the cost of the extended warranty is roughly proportional to the average cost of repairs. If you expect Apple to start paying for your clumsiness, their costs will go up and so will ours.

It is very clear what Apple Care is and isn't.

With my laptop being in a manufacturing environment, on the bench during hockey games and with me nearly every waking moment its nice to know that if something happens I am covered whether a hardware failure, my fault, clumsiness, parrot letting go in mid flight, or someone elses fault.
I paid extra for the warranty that gives me the assurance that my machine will be fixed 7 days a week.
When looking for this last laptop the warranty was one of the factors.

From Apples POV, they don't know whether the BT was in fact a defect or from the damage. For all Apple knows, the OP could be trying to get something fixed that was a result of it being dropped...

Yes it is a bad coincidence (timing), but at least apple is taking care of it. The OP has to understand this is normal practice. Yeah, Dell has some crazy warranty, but that is Dell...

Um, I don't think I've ever seen a steel laptop case...
It was a general statement (plastic for laptops, and steel/plastic + steel for desktops), but there's usually a metal frame of sorts internally when the exterior is plastic. Though I do recall steel's been used, those tend to be die cast out of a strong, lightweight metal, such as a magnesium alloy. IIRC, even boron and beryllium have been used in the past as part of a "weight war" for laptops.

I admire Apple products because they're genuinely innovative and stylish, but I've yet to own any portable Apple product that fit my definition of "tough."

My PowerBook G4 looks better than my one-year-old MBP, even though I used the PowerBook every single day for four and a half years. I dropped it many times, and it never dented. It was aluminum. My iBook G3 held up even better, of course.

I've been an exclusive Mac user since 1995, and I never once bought AppleCare until my iBook went in twice for the logic board recall/repair program. I bought it for my PowerBook, and most recently for my MBP.

The unibody notebooks practically necessitate a hardshell case to prevent damage (I've got a Speck one on mine). I have always had my MBP in a neoprene sleeve, and it still had some scratches and dents before I got the case for it. I will never have another Apple notebook without a case.

Seriously, check Amazon. They have free shipping. ;)

Accidents happen family is family, your sister is family your computer is replaceable your sister isn't. The so called genius's are just kids and like kids make bad judgement calls that is why they call them genius's to make them feel superior . Forgive your sister make it like hey things happen and down the road when you screw up well you get it I hope.

Family may be Family, but it doesn't put $2K back in your pocket;)
