This article must be wrong. I am repeatedly told on MacRumors that Apple is greedy, only cares about money, and doesn't innovate anymore.

But this states that not only did Apple innovate a better wireless charging solution, they donated it (i.e., gave it away for free) to the Wireless Power Consortium so it could be included in the standard for everyone to use? Clearly the article must be wrong. Apple doesn't innovate, and if they did, they would have kept that exclusive or charge companies to get more of that sweet, sweet services revenue.

And how it should be

This would be much better design as it would auto align to either portrait or landscape positions. And you also don't need the additional lower magnet to orientate items attached

The lower magnet is what auto-aligns and snaps your phone into the correct vertical position on stands. It also provides extra "grip" for wallets and power banks. While you dont need it, because QI2 pucks dont need it, it's a nice to have addition and really has no downsides.

Ok, but I mean vs just plugging in a cable? I guess eventually the smartphone will have no ports whatsoever.
Primarily that you don't have to plug in a cable. I love being able to just drop my phone on a Qi charger in our cars rather than find the end of the cable and plug it in every time I get in and out. It also helps keep the car looking neat and tidy. Same thing where I charge at night, just set the phone on the charger. Wake up in the middle of the night no need to fumble with a cord in the dark, etc.

It more convenient to place it on a charging stand or have things like Powerbank or wallets just stick to the back. The benefits of plugging in a cable are that it gives you faster charging and generates less heat. You can even use MagSafe for non-charging stands like car mounts if you want.

Its an irrelevant discussion since all QI2 phones will have the magnets whether you use them or not.
