Apple today announced that Pixelmator Pro is coming to the iPad, complete with a new touch-optimized workspace, full Apple Pencil support, the ability to work between iPad and Mac, and all of the powerful editing tools from the Mac version.

Pixelmator Pro is a popular image editing app that was acquired by Apple last year. There is already a more basic Pixelmator app available for the iPad and iPhone, and now the full-fledged Pixelmator Pro experience is coming to the iPad.

Apple says Pixelmator Pro for iPad will be compatible with iPad models equipped with the A16, A17 Pro, or M1 chip or later on iPadOS 26 or later.

Here are some of the Pixelmator Pro for iPad features highlighted by Apple:
  • A full-featured Layers sidebar allows creators to use images, shapes, text, and video
  • Smart selection tools for isolating and editing specific parts of images
  • Advanced bitmap and vector masks
  • Super Resolution for intelligently upscaling photos
  • Deband for removing compression artifacts
  • Auto Crop with automatic composition suggestions
  • Apple Pencil support for pressure-sensitive brushing, plus hover, squeeze, and double tap
Pixelmator Pro for both iPad and Mac will be available through the new Apple Creator Studio subscription bundle, which in the U.S. costs $12.99 per month or $129 per year. A one-time $49.99 purchase option will remain available, and this will presumably extend to the iPad app. Some new AI features and content in Pixelmator Pro for iPad will only be available with an Apple Creator Studio subscription.

For example, in both the iPad and Mac apps, Apple Creator Studio subscribers will get access to a new Warp tool for twisting and shaping image layers.

The end of development of the non-pro version? 😬
That happened years ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixelmator_Classic

EDIT: Wait, I suppose you were talking about the iPad app, which until now, was receiving updates under the Pixelmator name (I got my threads confused with the Creator Studio annoucement -- Pixelmator on Mac was discontinued a while ago in favor of Pixelmator Pro ... nothing like adding an subscription and AI to some of these on some platforms to confuse things more 🙂 ).

Pleasantly surprised to see they're keeping the one-time purchase option for Mac, but I can't see Apple extending that to the iPad version. They've never offered the iPad versions of Final Cut or Logic as ownable apps, so it's unlikely Pixelmator will break that pattern.

I really hope the one time purchase option includes the iPad version and the subscription is mainly for the AI features. That'd be in-line with how Canva has been treating Affinity with the subscription only being necessary for those extras.

making us pay for Apple Intelligence integration into pages, numbers, keynote etc is a dirty move . Especially since Google Gemini features in their Google suite can be used for free from any device, while apple suite is for devices that you already spend thousands of $ on.... that's dirty

Besides those features sound like Apple Intelligence integration to me, which not only comes in late and should have been here 1.5 years ago ago, but also was promised to come for dree

As someone who loves both Affinity and Pixelmator Pro, I have a sad feeling that Apple and Canva are in a race to see who can ruin their acquisition first. I'd still love to see Apple use Pixelmator to bring back a one time purchase aperture equivalent (extra AI features available with subscription), but that now seems like a pipe dream.

Seems a good bundle for younger artists/creators especially. I'll check it out, but I am currently so tied into Adobe I can't imagine changing my production path even with a $500 a year savings.

From the Newsroom article on Pixelmator Pro for iPad:
With full support for Apple Pencil, digital artists can enjoy painting in the most natural way with a beautiful collection of pressure-sensitive brushes. And unmatched Apple Pencil precision — combined with features like hover, squeeze, and double-tap — gives creators the ability to craft pixel-perfect designs.
Wonder whether they're positioning it as an alternative to Procreate (which I'm surprised Apple hasn't acquired)

That's cool, but what I really want is Pixelmator Pro for Apple Watch.

You'll need to subscribe to the Apple Creator Studio, with the added Apple Creator Studio Nano bundle for an extra $0.99 a month and have an iCloud+ 2TB or above. You'll also need the latest "Apple Watch Ultra 4 with AI". It'll unlock exclusive features such as Auto-Rotate with Apple Intelligence and Magic Black and White filters which can even turn rainbow black and white.

It is the best, and thinnest, subscription Apple has ever released.

I'll wait until Affinity rolls out their iPad version... unless they don't offer the free non-AI version.

I guess we supposedly are to be happy paying more for less. This over four trillion dollar company needs access to more of our limited money! Give me a break! This is bovine byproducts that really reak in the barn yard from decomposition. Where in the heck have the development teams been the last few years - releasing more and more issues with each release!

Retrograde progression???

If they offer a OTP, I'd be nice if they offered an upgrade path for those of use who bought the iPad versions. I won't hold my breath, however.

With the creator‑bundle announcement, I’m curious how many of Pixelmator Pro's new features will be gated behind a subscription. I’m also a little annoyed that the office productivity suite is included. If it stays in the bundle, I hope they’ll offer an à‑la‑carte option, since I don’t need or use Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro.
