Apple buying a third party app marks the end of any meaningful future innovation on that app. Remember that Siri was a groundbreaking technology when Apple acquired them and now it’s the butt of jokes, after remaining stagnant for many years.
Logic Pro would prove you very wrong here, but on the other hand their own photos app is supposed to be a product of aperture and it’s fallen far from that tree (for any pro usage that is, it’s fine for managing phone photos).
They’ve also managed to resist Apple’s pressure to go subscription. Another reason to support this fantastic app.
Ahh the internet. The place people come and just make stuff up.

Which is better, this or Affinity Photo?
If you don't already have Affinity Photo (or any of their apps) they are also 1/2 price and they also have 90 (yes, ninety!) day free trials.

If I have a Mac now (intel) and buy it for that and then I get a M1 Mac later this year will the app purchase work on both or do I have to buy it again?

also, does buying this for a Mac allow me to use on iPad too?
For now, there’s a separate iOS version. However, as I’ve started seeing apps indicate that an iPad with at least Bionic is required for certain features, I wouldn’t be surprised if Pixelmator was the first to offer their M1 enabled features to M1 enabled iPad Pro’s by way of enabling installation onto an iPad Pro.

I'm sure they do, they have a motive to want people to use subscriptions, but that doesn't mean they pressure people to do so. I'm wondering if there's evidence of them doing so.
I believe there’s information from a workshop. Now, that’s not really HEY YOU DO THIS but it’s offered as a way for developers to be profitable. Which really isn’t much unlike Twitch, YouTube, Patreon others. For everything you do that people like, there’s a certain percentage of people willing to pay you regularly to ensure you’re able to keep doing it for their entertainment/productivity. It’s an understanding that, yes, there’s a world of people that will never pay more than once for what you’re doing. However, for a small shop, there’s more than enough folks out there that will give you, say, $1.99 a month to make your development sustainable. FIND that group, provide features for that group and you’re a developer with a recurring wage in business for yourself.

Thanks for the tip!
I just bought this and tried the magic object removal tool.
It's amazing. completely removed objects from a photo and even people!
It wouldn't stand up to a pixel by Pixel investigation but to the naked eye the objects just vanish.
I'm guessing the tighter you can zoom in before removing the object the better?
The last adobe paint program I used was quite a few years old so I didn't realise just how far photo editing software has come.
Really impressed and at £19.99 I think it's worth it.
Now let's see if the upgrade is going to be expensive?

EDIT: ok just read the comments and the updates are free!!!!

It depends on the brush size.

Loved this app since release of original program and then this version. I still use both. Original on my iPhone and latest on MacBook

Bought. Great alternative to Photoshop for 95% of Mac users

I use both

Both of them have their strengths The main differences (for me) are:

Ease of use: Pixelmator
Features: Affinity
Speed: Pixelmator
HDR merging: Affinity
Panorama merging: Affinity
Healing/object removal: Pixelmator
Integration with Affinity designer and publisher: Affinity

If all you’re doing is editing smartphone photos, just go with Pixelmator. If you intend on doing complex layered projects, Affinity. If photography is a big part of your life, try (and maybe buy) both.

This app on an M1 iPad would be a strong argument to upgrading to an M1 iPad. I have the iOS pixelmator app, and it never impressed me the way the MacOS version does.

One of the few third-party apps I have, this one is fantastic.

Surprised Apple hasn’t bought them and integrated them into MacOS.

Yes. Yes. And yes a thousand times.

PixelMator and FileMaker would be amazing built-in software. Imagine if both were integrated into MacOS. Apple has the extra cash to do this, and cement the attractiveness of MacOS.

Both software names don’t just get the job done, they’re both beautiful and easy-to-use.

Apple gets a 30% cut of each sub payment. So they like that subscription nectar too.
Doesn’t mean there is any evidence that Apple called up PixelMator and encouraged PixelMator to switch to a subscription model. Adobe switched to subscription because it brings more money to Adobe, not because of outside influence.

PixelMator doesn't use a subscription model. An earlier comment was questioning why anyone would think Apple is pressuring developers to move to a subscription based model over a fixed one time purchase model.

My point was simply that Apple gains here from the subscription model as well. So they have a strong incentive to prefer it too.

I haven't read their marketing to developers to know how deeply they are pushing it, but with almost EVERY app going free + in app subscription now there must be some driver of this shift.

I am glad there are still some out there ignoring this trend like PixelMator and Things.

Well they already own FileMaker so they are 1/2 way there. The Claris name evokes a ton of nostalgia for me. I haven’t looked at FM in awhile, the Go version I tried didn’t do much for me. I’ll have to put it on my list to try again.

‘’and, I need to remember to grab Pixelmator pro on sale - I forgot last time.

It's great software and I feel good about supporting a small, independent app studio instead of the scumbags at Adobe.
If you had the choice between this one or Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher? If you happen to have experience on both would you encourage one over the other?

Backstory: I have been spending some time trying to go from photoshop to actually designer for the most part (realized that I should be doing more on the vector side of things, i.e, illustrator) but I’m always open to suggestions and I’m also getting tired of how badly Photoshop behaves, I could spend two pages worth of little things that work seriously bad... like unfocus the window and come back to it to be met with a spinning beachball for about 20seconds just because, for free.

Pixelmator pro is much easier to use compared to affinity, but I’m just a novice! Both apps can do far more than I’m capable of!

I've used Adobe apps for a lifetime. My sub expires soon.

For those who made the switch, how do shortcuts translate to Pixelmator?

I've primarily used PS+LR for photo purposes (retouch, compositing, corrections).

Well that's nonsense - they bought Emagic and Logic continues to be the best audio/midi sequencer ever since.

why are they scumbags? Because their business model doesn't align with your use of their software?

If you are a professional, you make back their monthly fee from a small percent of your profits from the first job of a month. I just did a $500 photo job. $480 in the bank after paying my $20/mo LR 1 TB plan. I had to share a web album to a client with 2,000 photos. They used LR web client to choose the photos they wanted me to retouch/edit. Maybe I'm off but I don't think Pixelmator offers anything similar to this.

I'm really happy there are cheaper (or free) alternatives for enthusiasts or part time professionals that don't need everything Adobe offers or who can't stomach the monthly fee.

To be fair you just brought Lightroom into the equation which is a separate app. No Pixelmator doesn't offer anything similar to that, and neither does Photoshop.
