iPad Pro only...
Perhaps, but the placeholder in the app store currently is for iphone and ipad.
But it could be an extra selling point for the ipad pro.
Iphone could very well be icloud drive only, and the ipad both. So you can download files into you icloud drive on the iphone and have the ability to drag and drop files from your icloud drive to files on your ipad pro.
If true, It will definately mean that 128gb will be the lowest storage tier for the new ipad pro' s. And a minimum for 4gb internal ram.

Please don't re-name the Finder into Files.

I know "Finder" is a weird name, but it's been around for so long.

Does anyone else remember the Chooser (it's what you chose your printer with)? This was back before OS X.

Knowing how Steve Jobs was, I'd guess he picked Finder and Chooser as names. "It's simple. You find your files. You choose your printer."

I was more fond of the "Launcher" app in OS 9 (I think it dates further back but that's what I used). It is a spiritual predecessor of the Dock / Launch Pad, and eventually became the iOS home screen / icon GUI methodology.

Well, ten minutes ago I could open it on my iPhone. If I press the link now, App Store tells me that this app is available only on the iPad. Anyone else seeing this?

I don't think so. As you can see, there is an option for iPhone.
Unfortunately it appears to only be an iPad app. click the link while using your iPhone and you get this message.
"Files is only available on iPad. You can download files for your iPad in the App store."

Well, thank god. First I thought that they changed their mind and make it iPad only.

It showed both iPhone and iPad that time. Now it has been taken down fully so we are seeing those errors which say 'it is not available in thins country store' or 'it is only iPad app'

No need to access to the entire filesystem, Apple would never allow that to happen. But a shared folder available to all apps, and to the end user via Apple's app, would be great. One could save all its documents on the public folder and make them available to multiple apps, and be able to share them easily from one app.

Hope this Files App is real. If we also get a Unix Shell, Xcode, USB drive, system-wide configurable Keyboard shortcuts and Trackpad/Mouse support for iOS this evening, my iPad can really replace my Mac...
It will not replace a mac. It would be a mac.
Unless apple reveals a $2000 ipad, it won' t happen. They still need to sell macs...

Wow I'm shocked that Apple decided to make such a bold step. This changes EVERYTHING

I'm quite sure: this will be the best software ever written by Apple and the incredibly precious design of this was developed over years of determination.

No, it will be a first step, very limited, and the topic of heated discussions over here an mac rumors for at least a year.
After that, there will constant whining from some users that want ios 6 back, because it was so simple and that ios 11 is a mess with too many options.
Usual path, some things never change ...
