General Planet being says he and pod2g have good news

I'm hoping they have one ready, as they've seen the 6.1 beta, I dont think much changes from the beta to the final release (at least I hope not)

They're likely preparing for 6.1 by using the betas, but nothing will drop before 6.1 is released to the public.

That's quite good but
On a memorable day – 10-10-10 – some members of the jailbreaking community were ready to release a tool called SHAtter, but before they did another hacker known as Geohot came out of nowhere

Suggests that Geohot is a pseudonym rather than an abbreviation of his real name and that it was unlike him to surprise us all. They might have mentioned that he was the first person to JB the iPhone (among other things) but as a brief summary it wasn't bad.

Thank you very much. Very informative. I liked it!
I'm missing Blackrain in that article tho, remembered it being a bit of a icebreaker.

BlackRa1n was interesting. I tried to persuade him to release it for all devices except the 3G as we knew there were problems. In the 2 days the release was delayed he solved a lot of problems but even he couldn't figure out the problem was with Apple's software.

I learned a lot in those two nights, normally I feel I have something to offer, but with GeoHot I just felt he was bouncing ideas off me, I don't think I helped at all. Not often I think someone is just operating on a completely different level. His thought processes were very interesting. Defiantly worth the sleepless nights.

iOS 6.1 Beta 4 expires on Monday.

Per the article above, LTE support for new carriers is to roll out by "next week". This requires an iOS update and carrier update to be pushed to devices, almost certainly in the form of 6.1.

Since Apple wouldn't wait until the day of iOS 6.1 Beta 4 expiring to release the GM to developers ... according to Apple's statements and the expiry periods, these are the likely release dates/latest dates:

iOS 6.1 GM (Developers): 01/25/13
iOS 6.1 (Public): 02/01/13

From the public release date, the developers will still need some time to test it on 6.1 and so forth, thus I said optimistically we will see a jailbreak for all devices on 6.1 before the end of February.

The only real screw up here could be is if Apple withholds 6.1 and dupes us with 6.0.3 for the LTE roll out, but .0.X releases are reserved for minor bug fixes where as .X.0 releases are for features (such as the one stated above)

This is all really exciting.

Question: Getting my 5 in a few days, If I upgrade the iOS, will I still be able to downgrade later through shsh blobs via tinyumbrella? Its a been awhile... I don't know whats changed.

At present, for the iPhone 5, and other A5+ devices on iOS 6+, you can only save blobs for the firmware in which Apple is presently signing.

Since Apple is only signing 6.0.2 for the iPhone 5, you will be able to save your blobs for 6.0.2 if you buy it before 6.1 drops and Apple stops signing 6.0.2 and starts exclusively signing 6.1.

That said, blobs do not permit downgrades for A5+ devices on iOS 6+, anyways, so if you don't get them, you should be okay. Most are speculating that the jailbreak will be for 6.1 anyways, so getting blobs for 6.1 is most crucial.

Of course this all assumes the jb devs can find a downgrade path using blobs, it's unlikely in my opinion.

So basically, its not a bad thing to save blobs, but for anything past an iphone 4 on ios 6, they're kind of useless.

Thanks!

Nope, with the release of 5.x we were in the same boat, SHSH's didn't work, but the devs came up with a fix.

So always save your SHSH's, you might need them in the future!

It may be better to merge this and the other thread about this into the same thread, so the same info isn't going out multiple times.

Mods?

Wasn't he the first one to unlock the first iPhone? That and jailbreaking is different.

Where to start?
To unlock the first iPhone he created the first Jailbreak.
He did BlackRa1n - JailBreak and
BlackSn0w - unlock
All current Jailbreaks use the LimeRa1n exploit - discovered by young Mr. Hotz because SHAtter had been pre-announced so he decided to beat them to it.
He was an original member of the Dev Team before they fell out over release timings.
He also discovered the 5.8 Bootloader bug among other things.
He was arrogant and an attention seaker and also the only person I have ever talked to who made me feel like I really was nowhere near his level of intelligence. Others may know a lot more about their subject than me but I can hold my own in a conversation with them. He was just a genius.

Ehh, nevermind. I know about his later stuff. I was just questioning whether he was the first to jailbreak an iPhone or first to unlock or both.
