I think the main point of the OP's post was that there's just no reason to be a dick on the forum.

That was it. That was my "new" message to forum members, and then the information to the nubbies so that it's less likely. :D Thanks for understanding.

OK, maybe we can put up one master sticky with links in it to other extremely useful threads and maybe three others or so. If people want to give me some links to the best and most useful threads that we have in here, I'll sort that bit out.

I'm happy to read everyone's suggestions, even the funny ones. :D

IMO i don't think that will help. Only if someone comes in the forum, and if they see there exact question in a sticky. I'm speaking from my own experience when i visit other forums to get a question. :p

In your experience, do you read a "Read Before Posting" thread?

Most of the times it just rules, or for one subject. Blue is talking about a master thread that has links to a bunch of threads that cover the subject. Since this is a general iPhone forum, there a bunch of different things to be asked..

Well for one I'd start out with links to iPhone/Data plan rates for various countries.

Eg.
Canada - Rogers Rates

USA - AT&T Rates

UK - O2 Monthly Plans

etc...

Those 2, plus maybe a sticky on pictures and videos and live streaming video?
Seeing as it's an international launch, it might be fun to see macrumor users from all over the world have a chance to add pictures showing the conditions, add info on stock?

Is there any way to use way back when to check out the threads around the initial launch, to see what might be useful?

I'd imagine there will be a huge desire to have a section for reviews, and recommendations and requests regarding the App Store, which will kick in too -where would they go?

Now, I'm not entirely sure what might go in the iPhone News forum at this stage or even in main news forum, so maybe line/queue/store pictures might not be best for this forum.

The App Store definitely needs to be highlighted. Let me kick this upstairs and see what comes back. :)

I don't mean to appear arrogant, but don't you think my 3 suggestions cover the vast majority of everything that gets repeatedly asked?

One sticky about firmware 2
One sticky about rates/costs of handset
One sticky about iPhone 3G specs

Or am I completely misinterpreting the whole thread haha :p

they're all covered elsewhere?
Firmware 2.0 will be front page
Rates /costs is already covered, and covered well by the respective countries' web pages at Apple/ the network
iPhone 3G specs would be at apple.com/iphone/specs

Well BV's suggestion was to encompass iPhone questions into one thread, may I suggest the title "3G iPhone Questions for launch day (Newbie help thread)" or something to that effect. ;)

If we can supply BV with links covering such topics as (and in no particular order)
  • Where to buy. (by country)
  • iPhone Rates, and handset cost (again by country)
  • iPhone 3G specs
  • Firmware updates (hmm might be good to come up with a tiny FAQ for this)
  • Information on the App Store.
If we give links or try to mock this up it would probably help the mods to create something quickly and as painless as possible.

I'm reading all stuff at the mo, and will probably act on some of what comes out of here within the next 24 hours or so, depending on how things pan out. :)

That's exactly the point, they are all covered elsewhere, over a gazillion new threads, people keep making new threads with the same questions, yet there are already threads with the answers....the point is to make stickies that has the important repetitive questions all in one place.....

Pogue's and Mossberg's reviews are up - currently 1 thread a piece. Any chance of addding them to the contenders?

And that's what we're going to do. :)

I'd like to hear more on stickies and forum organisation over the next hour or so before we put some ideas into practice later today, so if anyone has further feedback, now's your chance.

I would also like to encourage people to help keep this forum the way they'd like to see it by reporting posts using this button

next to the post in question and also report duplicate threads as well, providing a link to the thread you feel covers the topic already.

teardown thread / What chips does the iPhone use / comparing v1 iPhone's specs and chips to the 3G iPhone- would it be possible? There is already 1 thread on what GPS chip is being used, then we have all the other chips and manufacturers? Any chance of it's own thread, or to be added into a superduperthread?
Just echoing here for FYI for others?
