Thanks but I do get the screen on the telly. Either... Showing me the desktop and nothing moves other than the MBP is active and the TV display only shows the wallpaper.

Or..... The desktop wallpaper and I then have no access to cursor on the MBP to be able to put anything up or view anything on the TV.

there are 2 modes.

mirror and extend.

mirror will show same display on both screens.
extend will extend your desktop, you will see it as an empty background color, but you can move windows and application over there.

in the screen shot earlier, of the little tick for mirroring you can arrange them, so that the extended screen is placed somewhere "logically" from where your computers screen is (right left up or down) the computer doesn't know that you have your computer to the left or right of your tv.
you can also make the TV the main display, you move the white bar in the arrangement from one to the other.
when you disconnect the TV the computer screen will again be the main screen.

Appreciate your help on this but it's just not happening in any variation. The blank desktop shows nothing I'm doing on the MBP on the telly and the other way doesn't allow me to move cursor so can't make anything appear on screen other than wallpaper
