You don't understand what you are talking about so if I were you, I'd stop talking. First of all, if I have a box 2mm by 2mm and increase each length by x2, you have 4x the area, not 2x.

On to your next foolish thought. Why would Apple develop a higher res screen just to display the same old 1024x768 graphics? iOS graphics have been updated to retina graphics. Apps that support the retina display (apps will be updated to add support over time) will display retina graphics.

I can only assume you got your misguiding thinking from the fact that apps that haven't been updated will display upscaled iPad 2 graphics. Get your facts right before you start arguing against someone who politely gave you the correct information.
Im not wasting my time with this. I never said i knew what i was talking about. I was seeking enlightenment on the topic which is why it was all posed as a question. Even more amazing is that people answered me and educated me without being total **** nuggets like you.

The original and iPad 2 are both 1024x768 are they not, double that and you get 2048x1536. Ok in that case why is the icons and everything about iOS not smaller on the screen that is the higher resolution? I am positive that i read that the displayed resolution is not actually as high as the resolution of the display, if you catch my meaning.
It is as high. It's not smaller, because everything is now high-res art.

So let's say, an icon on iOS on an iPad 2 was four by four pixels, that now means that same icon is eight by eight pixels on the iPad 3 (NOT upscaled!).

Converting the video

How did you convert these videos's

I can't find any good tools to convert them to a ipad 3 format

Thank you kindly, again to most all of you for explaining this and helping come to understand it in the correct way. If anyone thought i was interjecting my flawed understanding as fact i apologize that wasn't the case, i was simply making clear what i thought was the case so that y'all could clearly correct me where needed, and everyone did and an informative and helpful way except for that one asshat. For that i thank you

Wait, what? Did I in any way insult you? If that's the case, I apologize, but I don't see what I did wrong.
".....if i were you i'd stop talking."
you might forgive me if i didn't take that as a compliment. No worries, I'm over it as well.

Dude, that was someone else.

I think you got your quotes messed up.

Okay let me just take responsibility and end this. Im sorry, no you did not insult me, i didn't understand your question, or didn't take it properly. I wasn't referring to you as an asshat, not even close. One person in this thread jumped at me for asking for information and suggested i just should speak at all, that rubbed me the wrong way, everyone else has been more than civil, kind even in this thread. I apologize for any misconceptions i may have caused anyone. (except the asshat):D

All good mate, some people are very quick to jump down a throat because they think something is one way when it is another.

It is easy to see why they thought you called them an asshat, quoting their post and all... but again, I think we are all over name calling and bullcrap, and I for one welcom those who are civil, helpful and of course inquisitive.

yea to clear it all up this is who i was referring to.

Yes i can see why he may have gotten that impression, especially if he hadn't seen my reply above it. No worries. Thank you kindly!

I was running on extremely limited sleep so I probably jumped down your throat a little to harshly and I apologize for that but yes, your post did sound like you were stating something as fact rather than asking a question (something you acknowledged above as quoted above).. In fact, from memory you were replying to someone already trying to correct you.

I also don't think calling anyone a **** nugget was called for (there are also better insults around). Dw though, I'm sure I'll check the previous page and there will be plenty of down votes for me :) anyway, try "if I'm wrong, someone correct me but I think ...." before a post next time. Language can go a long way.

EDIT: I was wrong, there weren't any.

I agree, civility sparks civility, we both could have been more welcoming. Lets put it behind us. :)

I'm not even sure why my AV receiver supports 4K video, never mind the iPad. It's not like I have a 100 foot screen to project on, or that 153" Panasonic TV that costs $500,000. Something tells me that if 4K is suitable for 100 foot diagonal screens in cinemas, it's probably not appropriate or necessary for a sub-10" screen, regardless of pixel counts.

Remember, it's all about how far away you are viewing the screen from. It's perceived resolution that's important (pretty much exactly what the term "retina" is about).

Hi guys, I have been experimenting with playing our RED Epic footage at 2048 resolution on the iPad and finally figured out how to do it. iTunes will not let you transfer a file this size so you have to use something like the DropBox app, Goodreader, or Air Sharing to download the file.

This file was rendered at 2048x1152 at 32Mbit/s: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5673574/retina-32Mbit.mov

Let me know if it works for you!

Doesn't work, the new iPad will not play videos with a resolution higher than 1920x1080, no matter how you get them on it.

I took a 4K video and tried shrinking and cropping it into all sorts of resolutions with Handbrake, and 1080p was the maximum it would play in the built in Videos App and also in VLC.

Unless someone creates an app that incorporates its very own video playing functionality (currently they all still use iOS's player shell, probably because it's the most efficient way) anything over 1080p is a no go.

I'm surprised Apple hasn't released max resolution demonstration videos on iTunes just so people can marvel at the screen. But i guess if iOS is capped at 1080p that would explain it....

I can confirm the Goodreader and DropBox apps can play 2048 footage encoded with MPEG-4. Try the link I posted!

I expect this wouldn't work as the iPad 3 is only advertised to play 1080p, although interesting nonetheless.

You're mistaken. The resolution of the display is actually 4x the res of the iPad 2, and iOS is displaying at the full 1536x2048. Any app has full access to that resolution, it's very disappointing that the YouTube app won't even stream 1080p videos to the new iPad, let alone the 4k videos.
The resolution is twice that of the iPad 2, or four times the pixels. An app is coded for 1024x768 points, and the OS automatically handles the scaling when on a retina device.

I'm hoping Apple overhauls YouTube in iOS 6. I want a new Maps app, and I want lots of other improvements too.

I should be clearer: just clicking on this link on the iPad won't work. You can download it into your DropBox on a desktop/laptop and then open it in the DropBox iPad app.

The Goodreader app is awesome because you can just paste in the URL under "Web Downloads" - "Enter URL" and it downloads and plays right there.
