You might also consider sending your photos to a few machinist shops in your area to see if they might be able to repair the damage.

At worst,
you might have to strip the chassis if they're going to do any welding but the damage is really not all that bad.

I am actually in the opinion that you should get it back and sell it on ebay. However, I am very curious about the so-called design flaw that they mentioned. Did they offer any words of advice on how to ship it later on? What could you have different differently? Are these machines THAT fragile that they can't withstand UPS? Oh and BTW I NEVER ship UPS unless I have to. They are the reasons why I got a 2 year old 19" CRT replaced with a 22" brand new CRT. It left NEC warranty warehouse fine and came to me with holes in the box. UPS workers are uneducated uncaring trolls who really do not believe in taking care of your cargo. To the minimum wage workers they don't need to worry about your stuff. FedEx and DHL on the other hand have been great to me and for me.

UPS has never paid a claim to me, although I've managed as the receiver to come out ok. FedEx shipped a new laptop I sold on ebay and the box was scuffed and they were willing to replace the machine, even though there was no damage. Now that's a good company.

This would outrage me, but I wouldn’t waste my time filing the claim. I doubt they’d pay.

For better or for worse...

Well, I've gotten the computer back. I'm going to try to sell it through a local group, asking a flat rate. What seems reasonable? Is $1400 too high? Could I ask for $1500? Any opinions are appreciated.

You'll probably get less than that, it is damaged now.

But you should be able to get more than the $860 Macofalltrades.com was going to give you.

Remember we thought you were selling a 2.7GHz machine there for awhile -- not a 2.0GHz machine.

If it's the one with 8 DIMM slots, it'll probably not do a whole heck of a lot worse that a refurb 4 DIMM machine.

Using a 1-2" wood dowel/rolling pin, you may be able to straighten the handle out quite a bit.

Design flaw: This was my first G5. The box had been totalled by the courier company and the case was bent along the same joint and crunched at the front. This was due to something (god knows what) actually puncturing the box, as well as whatever else ripped it down the side.

There are obviously thousands of G5s that arrive without damage and work perfectly, but I'm willing to bet a few that have been returned that are cosmetically damaged, have been due to this fragility and inherent weakness around the bottom seam.
