Hi All :)

After recently playing too much GTA4 and watching a few gangster films, I've really got into that whole kind of world (fictionally).

Therefore, I would really appreciate if you could recommend me some really good gangster films (so I can get them on blu ray, yes I am an audio/video nut :))

I specifically like - Money! and lots of it. I love the 'suaveness' of films, people being rich, just that real 'high class' feeling of people - I love that! Even just as a slight example - I watched Lord Of War recently - I just loved how rich he is, the 'class' he has as a high profile person - I just love that kinda stuff! Obviously gangsters come with this kinda stuff, but it doesnt have to be a 'gangster' film as such. Even the green hornet of all films, I liked how badass the 'bad guys' were in that, even though the film wasnt too good haha :)

I much prefer anything but UK films (I live here and think its crap) so american, russian, japanese, american italian etcetc is much preffered but please do recommend any good british ones anyway! :)

Guns/action - goes without saying, an essential to any gangster film. No cheesey stuff, just reall good films though :)

Drugs/girls - may sound weird but this is always awesome, Nothing wrong with some girls and drugs normally come with gangster kinda stuff, I just think it compliments this whole 'gangster' persona perfectly. Again, watching Lord of War recently - I just found it awesome that they get paid in 6kg of pure coke and demolish a load of it, love that haha!

Anyway, if you could pleeeease recommend me these kinda films I would be so appreciative, as I'm going mad on the blu-rays recently (I literally have a list on my computer of films I need to get) and would love some more films in this kinda genre :)

Much appreciated MacRumors lot! :D

EDIT: Although, any other films you think I should get on blu ray (war, action, whatever) please do recommend. :)
Oh and good TV series too.. sorry for so much haha

Except for the top three, I don't think these films meet the criteria that the OP layed out.

Thanks L(

The first one that comes to mind, other than the above, is Road To Perdition.

Damn excellent movie. Sterling acting. Nice pace. Art.
Thanks man, that's what I like to hear, I love good cinematography in films.

I guess they don't, but I did ask for any good films you might think of whilst contributing :) thanks for pointing that out though, I'll put it on my non gangster list ;)

I seem to really like films which may not be utterly "WHOAA" as a film but those ones which you just sit, keep quiet and think "damn, that was a good film."

I guess what I mean is that my currently Blu-Ray collection isn't based on the best visuals (i.e avatar, transformers) as I dont like films like that, but just my favourite films! Some to name - Clerks, Requiem for a Dream, All of tarantinos work (Kill Bill 1/2 with DTS audio, mmm) Ferris Buellers Day Off - things which most people wouldn't get on Blu Ray because theyre not typically 'hollywood stunning' but because I think its a great film anyway, I'll get it on blu-ray. I can appreciate a good film (like Clerks) because it was filmed on a crap camera, a $16,000 budget with no famous actors or special effects - but it's still fantastic. And thats why I enjoy it in Blu Ray :D

Anyway, going off topic.. keep the great films comin' :)

Some of these films might not be the very best, but they certainly fit your criteria, and all of them were enjoyable

RocknRolla
Guy Ritchie, no more needs to be said on that, you either love him or you hate him

Layer Cake
Guns, Coke and Daniel Craig before he was James Bond

Essex Boys
This is a true story, and I grew up and still live today in the town where these guys were operating. I now live in spitting distance from what used to be Raquels, it's now a Pool/Snooker club and not much less seedy

Kidulthood
Modern day London gangster flick, started as a college/uni project and became a quite successful/well recieved film

Adulthood
Sequel to Kidulthood, considered by many to be better than the first

Football Factory
About football hooliganism in the UK

Green Street
Frodo Baggins as an American journalist turned football hooligan!

Eastern Promises
Deviating from the UK/London theme, about the Russian Mafia. Probably the best in this list, IMO

The Godfather trilogy is the definitive gangster epic. They are incredible movies. And Sopranos is a very good depiction of the gangster life if you have access to all the seasons originally broadcast on HBO. In the U.S. these episodes are available through rental on something like Netflix.

Alpha Dog is pretty awsome.
not a gangster film , but has money/drugs/girls, and is based on a real story, it's a really good movie.

hmm Gangs of New York? :)

some great suggestions so far guys thanks :)

Awesome man, such an epic list, with links too! :) i've seen green street which is pretty good, but I must say that im not too keen on british gangster films. I much prefer american, italian, japanese, russian (especially russian :D) films to english, but I will definitely check those out, thanks man :) I've seen kidulthood/adulthood, i can appreciate that they're good films but theyre just not my cup of tea - not too much into UK chav/gangster kinda stuff haha as I said, but cheers anyway!

Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Good choice sir, but I already have both of these, I am a huge Tarantino fan! :)

Haha I've got the godfather on the list, can't believe i've never seen it! Yes I've heard the sopranos is right up my street :) i'm not in the US so box sets it is haha, but thats no trouble :D Thanks man!

ill add it to the list :)

The sopranos is a TV show, but is right up your alley.
same as above, thanks man :)

Slightly off gangster genre

You've got amazing gangster film suggestions, although I feel it important to suggest that GTA IV is more than just a game about a punk who moves up the ranks, its great story telling with a violent backdrop. If you're looking for great story telling and branching off of just the gangster genre may I suggest a few?

These are dark/violent:
Natural Born Killers
Delicatessen
12 Monkeys
The Killers
The Replacement Killers
Taxi Driver

Hip Hop Lifestyle:
Kids
Exit through the Gift Shop
Dark Days

Drugs:
Requiem for a Dream
Trainspotting
Scarface

I dunno if this helps/hurts just wanted to kick in my two cents;)

American Gangster is my favorite gangster movie, followed closely by Casino.

If you like heist movies check out:
-The Score
-Oceans 11, 12, 13
-The Town
-The Italian Job

They aren't as "suave" as the gangster movies, but the two genre's go together well, I think.

WARNING: Watching the above mentioned movie in an unaltered state is *******e stupid.
