If they use it constructively, I don't see why not.

I had a laptop when I was thirteen and used it to make money.

Good effort!

theres not a whole lot of difference between laptops and desktops these days, though it is handy to be able to run on battery occasionaly, and to be able to take it out of the house. And if we're looking at your little 13yr old growing up, he might want to take his laptop to classes and things in college. Laptops ftw!

Agreed. Laptops seem to be more versatile with little loss now days

A buddy of mine who is a huge PC/Linux geek hates laptops because "they're not expandable".

"Why don't you haul your rig to class then?"

"It weighs 45 pounds........

oh..."

wow.. 2 people agreeing with me in the same thread. I'm going to have to mark this day!

Most consumers never upgrade they're computers, and I find my macbook is upgradeable enough. HDD and RAM are the two things your most likely to change.

haha right keep saying the mbp will be adequate when hes 22 graduating from college aka 9 years....

depends what he does in college. If its not a computer based course, it should be fine for browsing and reading and writing notes. Even in 9 years time. Might not be the sharpest tool in the box, but it'll get the job done. My 13 year old PC still runs and is sufficient for internet and music!

as long as he doesnt upgrade the os then sure as that what kills the performance...same with new apps

still im willing to bet he will be getting a new comp for college so its kinda a moot point

Ok, so I have a MBP, I'm 15 (almost 16) and I would say that I put it to good use through graphics stuff, and making movies. My step-brother has this old gateway and would like a mac so I said cool, crossing over to the good side. So ya, he was going to get a black MB but then I showed him the deal on amazon for a last gen MBP ($1550) He said, oh sweet, I like the MBPs better so I'll just get that. So even though the MBP is way above his needs, I thought it was reasonable for him to get one sense they're the same price. Anyway, he basically just surfs the internet, writes papers, and plays the sims . So, he suddenly says, hey I want the 2.4GHz one for $1750. I told him, wow, that's ridiculous, you don't even need the 2.2GHz one why would you ever get the 2.4GHz one, he couldn't really give me a good excuse other than that he thought it was better, even though I told/tell him everything about it. Anyway, I can't really convince him to just get the base one so I'm planning on showing him the responses on this thread. So, just tell him your opinion on it (which I'm sure will be "waste of $200").

thanks for your time.

Go for the bigger one, it's cooler... No, I don't think he needs it, but you know, for a few hundred more he has a more future-proof machine, so if he can afford it, go for it!

A high spec macbook pro should last him all the way through the rest of school and college if required...

If this family can afford to buy a MBP for both a 15 y/o and a 13 y/o, I doubt they will require that it last through college. Anyways, I find that to be an unrealistic expectation. The MBP should be last fine through high school. But I would not want to enter college with a five y/o notebook. Who knows what the technology will be like then, but I can bet it will be leaps and bounds ahead of today's MBP.

also, if ur bro was so impulsive to buy a mid range mbp, he's probably not going to keep it for 5 years. he shoudve saved money and put it towards a better comp later on
