Actually, I think your original statement is something to consider. They already shady enough to steal a cheap item. They could mess something up or loosen something up on the car as well that you can't identify right away. You would never be able to prove it as them either.

It's like acting like an ass in a restaurant because they got your order wrong. Well yo know they gonna be all pissed back there making your new order......

Excellent point. I think I would find another dealer for servicing if you can. unfortunately these days there are fewer and fewer dealers and too many of the honest ones go out of business and are replaced by the bigger dealers that pressure you a lot and don't have the best service departments.

A low end worker was shady enough, not the dealership. The last thing a dealership would need is one of their workers to loosen something, cause a major accident, and have the inspectors find something.


Just because these sort of things happen, there's no reason to let them take you.

Keep calm and talk to the manager/ owner. If they ignore or refuse to fix the issue, file a police report, take them to small claims court, and file a statement with the BBB and car manufacturers associated with the dealership. The problem will likely solve itself quickly from there.

The same could easily be said at a restaurant. Mistakes happen and, so long as you're polite and don't cause a commotion, the waiter/ chef would have no reason to mess with anything. If you sense that they had, again, feel free to speak calmly to the manager.


I don't understand the 'it's not worth it' mentality... and I find that that's a big part of what's wrong with society. There's no reason to ever let someone get away with something- especially when the solution is no more difficult than being calm and polite or writing on this forum.

I'm not advocating the suck it up and take the loss point of view. I'm just saying that SusanK had a good point and that the OP needs to be cautious if they still have his vehicle. You know "Junior" has friends there and scratching a car or putting a ding on it that won't be noticed right away is not above someone that would try to steal an iPod.

One can't take a quick walk around the car before leaving the lot?
Or, if that worried about tampering, can't mention your concerns to both the manager and/ or police?

It seems simple enough.

My suggestion was for the OP to consider advantages and disadvantages of pursuing the iPod issue with the dealership at this point. OP is the only one who can determine comfort level here.

I would be very annoyed if an item was removed form my car but aware that it happens frequently in my area. This should not be acceptable but dealers have owners sign releases when a car is presented for service or repair.

The call is the car owner's. I was just tossing out food for thought. Not my decision to make.

Hope the repairs go well and OP has car and iPod back in good condition.

If you mean a "release" of liability from theft by their own employee, such a release is not worth the paper it is printed on. Likewise for any signage.

But that doesn't justify blatant theft. The OP had his 32GB iDevice swapped for a broken 8GB one. It's quite ironic that the thief would have had more chance with getting away with it had he just stolen it rather than try to be clever and swap it.

The person who replaced the broken iPod for a functioning device is not bright. Hopefully this will be resolved in the OP's favor.

These days dealerships need the service work to stay in business now since cars are becoming more reliable. No dealership wants to get a reputation whereby it's known that things are stolen from your car while it's in for service.

Of course the shady dealerships are still around but they make their money by high markups, hidden charges, high financing, requiring extras like "undercoating". I hate having to buy a car - the hardest part is finding a reputable dealer, not the lowballers, especially the ones who say "the deal is only good today". When I bought my last car the hardest part was finding a dealer who would play fair and let me pay cash. they hate people who pay with cash (bank cashier's check).

You are right there. They love financing, it is how they make some of that extra money. Been there, done that, with the cash. Have had dealers actually walk away from my cash offer and that is the only way I like to buy cars. Getting more difficult to do now.
 
We are becoming an endangered breed.

Cash seems to be going out of style for many purchases. I still like cash and keep some in the house. When I renewed my homeowners policy they told me it only covers $200.00 in the house. I was surprised.
 
"Not responsible for items left in car" is when a thief breaking in and stealing stuff.

It doesn't cover employee theft; I would definitely pursue this; I would first start by calling a towing company and having you vehicle moved to another shop.

If they can't even do the right thing on an iPod, who's to say they won't deal more nefarious things like replacing your wipers with old one or swapping your engine for an junk one?

Then call the police and then prepare a case for small claims. Make sure you add the cost of the hassle of having your device stolen, having to move your vehicle to another shop.
 
Suggestion

I keep an empty tote bag in each car. It's there in the event that the car needs to be towed. I can place all my personal items in the bag and take them with me.

The tote bag for me is just an necessary as flashlight, flares, blanket, jumpers and any other items stowed in car for use in distress situations.
