In several past years, I would've been in total agreement with the OP on this one, but I think Apple actually made a significant stride towards being more competitive and "with the times" with their latest MBP refresh. The new CPU offerings are only a couple months on the market, which was unheard of for previous MBP lines. True, it's lacking a few other things that a PC labeled as "Pro" and sold in 2011 probably should have (GPU could be a bit better [though I assume the nVIDIA/Intel debacle played a role in that], USB 3.0, cheaper 8GB RAM option, HDMI port, etc), but nothing about it is so archaic as to cause the price point to be downright offensive as it was in years past.

I was on the fence about buying my first Mac for a few years and this refresh convinced me to finally pull the trigger. So far I'm absolutely loving it. On one hand, $2000 is a bit high for a 15" laptop. On the other hand, I bought a 15" HP dv6t Quad Edition back in January, fully spec-ed out (i7-820QM, 8GB RAM, 1GB ATI 6570 I think, etc) for $1400 (got a discount, so really I spent a little less but the retail price was $1400) and it was the worst laptop I've ever used. I sent it back in less that two weeks. Given the vast difference in quality, both of user experience and of design, I think the $600 difference between the two is well worth it.

Side Note: I'm hoping the latest refresh is a sign of a permanent shift in Apple's release strategy for MBP such that future refresh dates will be in reasonably close proximity to Intel arch. updates from now on.

i was comparing a dell inspiron 14 to the 13" MBP in terms of price. by the time you configure the inspiron and add in all the software that comes with the MBP the price is the same

I'm doubtful from what you are saying is accurate, link? Additionally, I've worked for Dell (HP uses the same suppliers) and honestly, you may well regret your decision. The lifespan of a MBP due to design will outlive most other notebooks. If you are looking for a solid notebook that will last you 4-5 years and don't want a macbook, Acer would be my next suggestion, or an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad.

Just to check, I jumped on HP's website and the Envy which is equivalent, base model is $1000, but it also comes with an i5, not an i7. Making that one change, brings the price up by $575 to $1575, to compare with the MBP 15" i7 model. Graphics card is equally comparable.

$1575 to $1800 (1750 w/ school discount) is not a massive difference IMO.

All in all, yes a Mac is "slightly" more expensive, but you have to compare apples to apples. (no pun intended :p) Certainly is not $1000 in the difference.

pavilion dv6t or something like that. anyway specs are accurate. wouldn't have ordered it otherwise. 6750 radeon 1gb, i7 sb quad care, 6gb ram, 750gb hd, $850 ($150 off plus another $150 off with code found on a few deals sites.)

So yes difference is certainly $1000.

Seems a lot worse than usual. I know I'm going to not get everything the MBP has, but $1000 difference?

I can buy a new 13" MBP from Microcenter for $1099 in addition to my $850 HP for close to the same price as the 15" MBP. $250 under the $2200 MBP which has the same gpu as the HP.

:)

OR I can buy Apple 27" $1000 display to go along with my HP for the same price.

IT's a big difference.

Anyway my hP isn't here yet. I'm not going to say it is great until I try it. I May hate it. IT's just that the massive price difference so soon after the new MBPs were released forced me to try this HP. :D

Actually Apple is among the first with the SB cpus if not the first.

AGree MBPs lack a few things that they shouldn't, but don't agree the price difference isn't worse than ever. See below.

See I just got my dv6t quad core sandy bridge i7, 6750 1gb radeon, 750gb hd and 6gb ram for $850. That's a $1000 difference and with better gpu, hd and ram, but same cpu.

So I can only conclude that the price differential between the 15" MBP and Windows pc are at their worst this soon after a new MBP refresh in recent memory.

That difference is enough to buy me a smaller Mac laptop in addition to this HP for same price as a 15" MBP.

You price shoppers are not Apples base anyway. I hate on those models too. Do they still feel almost sticky because of the amount of shiny gloss everywhere? I gave myself a blister on my finger from that glossy ass trackpad. Also gotta love all those stickers. Bam! Intel. Bam! Plextor. Bam! ATI Graphics....Still feels like it will fall apart any second. Even if I was a Win fanboy I would get a nicer machine. At least something cool like carbon fibre or similar. Why buy the crap they sell at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc? In the end you are helping to kill our economy.

Actually Apple is among the first with the SB cpus if not the first.

Sager/Clevo, MSI, Alienware, Asus all had the SB i7's on sale few days after release, just had a huge re-call because of intel's issues with the motherboards.

Then you should buy one of these pieces of junk plastic laptops with no service and support running the latest versions of Microsoft's mediocre OS. Apparently Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt, are not enough for you somehow.

As a previous poster mentioned, Asus, HP, Samsung and Toshiba all have sandy bridge notebooks out however it would seem that our premium priced favourites could not keep up with the competition. there has STILL not been a new mbp relearse in line with current technology nor has there been much media attention on mbp in relation to ipad and iphone. It would seem from the conference call and earnings filing released last week that these products are where the highest growth is and so the company seems to be focusing more of its inovvation efforts that. although this makes business sense, it does mean the mbp will be taking a clear backseat in terms of apples priorities.

essentially, it would seem that uptake of the mac hasnt been as great in relation to the whole pc market as apple would have like and hence is now focusing its attention on the i stuff to please investors

as a result, instead of buying last sasons left overs at overly inflated prices (and comparing the specs with any other noteok will book will reveal they are), the rational thing to do is to opt for modern (or current rather) technolodgy and go for an HP envy of the super stylish new vaio... and ofcourse close down this forum as we are unlikely to see anything great from the mbp line as they are clearly light years behind the competition

HP had SB on January 6th.

Also, the dv6t-QE screen is quite inferior to the MBP. The panel contrast is quite poor and the only resolution offered is 1366x768. Even for internet browsing, I found that to be annoyingly insufficient (particularly the vertical pixel count). On top of that, the battery life is laughable. You'll be lucky to get just over two hours of light to moderate browsing out the included 6-cell.

Pretty sure Apple is first with sb laptops. Do a quick check. No retailer is carrying sb hP or dell laptops that I know of. I just checked BEst Buy. Not selling HP laptops with sb cpu. they just started showing up on hp and dell sites. And aren't shipping for another 2-3 weeks.

Yeah screen will be worse. We'll see if it is good enough or not.

yes and? This doesn't change the fact Apple is the only one out there with sb laptops that I can find.

I don't think the other guys released laptops with sb cpus. Desktops are a different story.

The "average" Mac user (i.e. the person that goes to the Genius bar to ask questions on how OSX works) couldn't care less about Sandy Bridge or Core 2 Duo. :D And those people make up at least 75% of the people that use Macs. This forum and people that worry about having the latest and greatest laptop, are the minority.

You know, you're right. I glossed right over that fact myself. Someone is about to be disappointed lol.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's as if a million pancreas skin cells inside me died. You're right. I checked my receipt. Selective dyslexia kicked in I guess.

hhhmm not as enthusiastic about it. :D

It's still a major savings because I believe the 6570 is still better than the 6490 in the $1800 MBP. Price is still $850 compared to $1800.

But I wanted that powerful gpu for gaming. That was what put me over the edge. Now I don't care as much.

Ah well. ..... probably will go with plan c. Build myself a pc to get the real power I need for playing BF3 when it comes out. PLan A was the refurb MBP I bought for $1265 before tax. GPU didn't quite cut it though.

They don't sell this HP at Walmart. Sorry. They do sell Ipods and the iPHOne at Walmart though.

And I'm killing the economy by purchasing a laptop?

After reading what I wrote I am unsure of my intentions. Apologies for my useless rant:eek:
I think it had to do with plastic=oil=???. Carry on.
