If you are asking people to give you reasons why you should keep it, then you shouldn't keep it.

The way you are making this sound is that you want us to make you believe it was a good deal, and truthfully it isn't, unless you can justify the means.

Keep it and move on with your life, if you have second thoughts return it. Easy as that.

Think of it in a reverse situation. Say your wife wanted to buy something of equal value in the same situation, maybe a Prada/Gucci bag or something because her old one is getting a bit dull.

I'd say return it as Apple doesnt charge a restocking fee anymore and pick up a new mbp when you get your situation figured out next year (at least you can pick up one of the new Ivy Bridge mbp).

Also, they do have skyrim out for the 360 and ps3.

What really boiled down in the post was:

Should I have bought it now or should I have waited one year more for Ivy Bridge?

Gee...that's funny, especially since your original post closed with:
Please tell me I am not an insensitive a#@$#hole that doesn't care of its wife's worries. Please tell me its all gonna be alright ... even if next year I need to feed myself with cup ramen.

I think you're a little disappointed (and likely surprised) that the majority of replies did tell you were an insensitive a#@$#hole that doesn't care of its wife's worries and that it wasn't gonna be alright and now you're attempting a little more justification.

The first thing people say is usually the truth. If you want to justify your actions, and go against what you said yourself was the right thing to do, go right ahead - it doesn't affect me.

Sounds like the OP isn't getting the replies or the accolades he was looking for for being an "insensitive ******" so he made up the part about this being more lighthearted than he let on.

Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that he made a completely frivolous purchase. The fact that he started this thread in the first place kinda proves it. Who needs a "pat on the back" from complete strangers to help himself feel better about doing something he realizes is wrong? Seriously?

This is either one of the saddest stories I've read in a while.... or the most brilliant trolling.

Not sure which

I know it sounds weird and kinda silly, but I really need you MBP lovers to tell me that I made an awesome decision buy just buying a Late 2011 17" MBP, 2.5Ghz I7, 4GB RAM, 750GB 7200rpm HDD and AG Screen. I need it form you cuz I will NEVER get this from my wife, who looks at my brand new MBP with resentment because I took the money out of my kids' college fund. But hey, I NEEDED this MBP in order to play games. I HAVE to have it.

Yes my wife beat me with a frying pan and my kids are crying right now but what *I* want is the most important thing in my family so nobody else matters! I realize I shouldn't have done this but I work my ass off so I deserve to be selfish.

So there you are. My rationalization of why I needed to buy it. Please tell me I am not an insensitive a#@$#hole that doesn't care of its wife's worries. Please tell me its all gonna be alright ... even if next year my kids can only eat cup ramen in college. But hey, as long as people on MacRumors approve it can't be ALL bad, right?

Please, I know i sound PATHETIC, but I really need this. I know that of all people, only you guys would truly understand why I needed it to buy it.

At first I thought this thread was funny but wow. Seeking empathy to rid yourself of a guilt-laden conscience from a bunch of strangers on an interwebz forum is really pretty sad.

Someone has there priorities in order.

C'mon guys/girls we were there at one time and made selfish decisions like the OP has made.

I don't want to take this out of proportion like some others did, but if you're in an unclear financial situation, spending more than $2500 for a computer right now isn't the best idea. Do you absolutely have to have this now?

You could have bought an Xbox for $300 and played those games. Sell your old MBP and with the difference have bought a 15" refurbished from apple.

No need to buy a new MBP and especially a 17" one at that. You have a wife for a reason, when you get married everything has to be agreed upon. I say take it back to the store and do one of the options above.

This thread is sad. There is a difference between a need and a want. You should put yourself (need wise) and your family before your wants. The 2nd post in this thread is very well written – I'd take his/her advice and return the computer.

Hiya guys. Thanks for the replies.

Regardless of what you guys think, I did start this thread opening myself up for "you're a moron, go return it" as well as " whatever dude , it's your life" kinda posts.

Do you think I would really start a thread like this thinking that everyone will just come and pat my back? Just because? I'm not that dumb you know. I post it here because i thought that if there was a place where i could get a "pat on the back" it would be here, and if I didnt get such thing from the people who would make a purchase like mine, then It's a clear indicator that I should go return the MBP. Yes, when I bought it I was open to the idea that outta sheer guilt I would return it in 30 days. I just was using this thread as something that could tip the scale either way, and I don't mind If you tip it towards the "you're an A#@$hole , go return it". Again, the reason why this thread exists is in part for getting comments like this is, to see how many I got and the rationale behind them.

So on that sense, thank you for your replies. My last post was directed towards getting the thread more into control cuz the whole situation was definetley being blown up to ridiculous proportions when I started getting "she'll divorce you man" " no baby for you" " your kids wont have a college education" kinda comments. Yes, the somber tragicomic wording and the info on my original post prompted it to get into that proportion so in part it is my fault, and for that I apologize. I'm sorry.

Anyway, a new development on my attachment to my new MBP happened. I HAVEN'T EVEN INSTALLED WINDOWS 7 ON BOOTCAMP yet ( and hence haven't gamed on it) and I'm having a a kinda "where have you been all my life??? experience with Lion and multitouch gestures. Lemme elaborate.

My old MBP is the last 17" model that came without a multitouch pad. So for the last 4 years I've been using Leopardfirst and then Snow Leopard without the multitouch gestures. Always thought they were a nice thing to have, but not really necessary. OMG was I wrong. Been fiddling with Aperture, Final Cut and Logic on my new MBP and OMFG how much more of a bliss it is to work with multi touch. I really never realized. Even my wife is more on board with the purchase now after I showed her all the gestures in action while working on our wedding pictures on Aperture.

Another thing I realized is how much of a time saver Mission Control in Lion is. I'm the kind of guy that gets easily distracted, so say I'm working on Word, then open a few tabs on chrome to read blogs and such, then I decide to work on aperture a bit, then I decide to run a NetLogo simulation on the background so I can get the data later, and then I decide to let Final Cut compress a video while I return to work back on Word, whilst having several pdf open on preview on the scientific papers I'm working with to write my new paper. For this, Mission Control makes my life so much easier. I was never fond of "Spaces", It took me too much time to organize and then remember to which space I had sent which window. Apple finally nailed it with Mission Control.

So, the "return the new MBP" option is still on the table (mainly thanks to your comments), but even if I do, I now would want to get all the workflow improvements that multitouch and mission control could bring to my old MBP.

So the question is being rephrased again:

Should I return the MBP and spend 40$ (hinges for my old MBP - definetely miss moving around without worrying if there is a wall or a stack of books to lean the screen) + 30$ (Lion upgrade) + 70 $ magic trackpad ( Total ~140 USD) to get all the abovementioned workflow improvements?

Pros of returning the MBP and spending 140$:
- 140 is cheaper than 2400 USD.
- Might get to buy Ivy Bridge MBP next year

Cons or returning MBP and spending 140 $:

- Out of those 140$, 70 $ are not a great investments cuz it will be moot having a magic trackpad after I upgrade to an MBP Ivy Bridge or Haswell in 1 or 2 years. No I wont buy and iMac nor a Mac Pro. I've mentioned before I dont want a desktop, besides even the smallest imac has too much of a big screen for me. 17 " is my sweet spot.
- There is a noticeable difference on multistaking with the new MBP. The old C2D one got a real performance hit if I was running say Aperture and Word and Preview. The new one handles it better. Still, its not like it was undoable with the old one ....
- I wont have my frivoulous gaming. Yes I know it seems that entertainment and enjoying life is not important for some of you, but that 30 % time usage in bootcamp gaming I get out of my MBP IS IMPORTANT FOR ME. Please stop the "buy a PC" comment. I think I made it clear I dont want/need a desktop, nor will I spend money on a fugly Alienware. I want to have all my gaming on my one and only prime machine. Period. I dont care if I have to play the games on medium settings. Having that 30 % of gaming time on my MBP is what I want.

So, still welcoming your comments. For the record, " the you're a moron, return the MBP and spend 140 $ " comments ARE WELCOME. What is not welcome is to blow everything outta proportions with the marriage counseling on how not to get divorced, or the assumption that because I cant resist spending money on a new MBP then that means that next time I will cheat on my wife because I can't resist. Those kind of comments ARE NOT WELCOME, and are UNCALLED for.

Hope I made myself clearer this time. And sorry If the wording of my previous post caused you to get concerned about my marriage life.

Isn't it cheaper getting an Xbox 360, BF3, and Skyrim for $2000 less? As an added bonus, they will run better on the Xbox 360.

You said your current MacBook Pro served all of your needs except gaming. I think a $400 hit on the Xbox 360 and games would have been a better move than a $2400 hit.

Not to berate you, but you're an adult with a wife and plan on having a kid next year. Do you have such little self control that you dropped $2400 for games? Like I said, no one said you can't have fun. But there are compromises ($400 to satisfy you versus $2400).

And friendly reminder, your wife didn't say you absolutely cannot get a MacBook Pro. She just said wait till next year!

Edit - Dear God I missed the part where you already have a PS3. Come on man! $120 to get 2 out of the 3 games you wanted (yeah life isn't fair) would have been the right move. Not to mention Skyrim has 200 hours worth of gameplay! And yeah, I hear you on the BF3. I myself play it on Xbox 360. I too had to compromise on taking a $60 hit to play with less players than spending $800 on a gaming PC.

Hi EtherealMAC,

just keep it already. It's an investment that lasts 3-4 years. That's somewhere between 50 and 80 bucks a month. How much are you spending on mobile phone contracts, TV, internet, cinema, going out for dinner, etc each month? I guess you didn't cut back on your cable TV or internet speed because next year something might come up. Sure, a MBP has a big upfront cost, but it also has a reasonable resale value, i.e. not all of the money is completely gone, if the worst case (kid + no job) happens.

Of course, there are a few things you could have done to achieve some sort of compromise. You could have saved $500 or more by going for a 15'' model. Or go for a refurbished early 2011 model, at $2000 including the AG screen. Except for adding a SSD, you went for the most expensive setup available...

Anyways, enjoy your new mac. Giving it back and spending $140 on some repair won't make you happy.

Cheers

PS: I strongly suggest not bringing this up, but for yourself, why don't you just roughly estimate what your wife spends on stuff that is not necessary for living?

what is it then? A waste of money? Does a car qualify as investment? (just checking, english is not my first language, maybe I have a different definition for that word in my mind)

It isn't an investment in the same way a television, PlayStation, and smartphone are not investments. With the above logic, shoes would be considered an investment because you need them to walk to work every day.

least u could have done was buy the 13inch t save a few bucks...

return it.

if my girl says no baby, then no baby lol

Google FTW:

in·vest·ment/inˈves(t)mənt/
Noun:
The action or process of investing money for profit or material result.
A thing that is worth buying because it may be profitable or useful in the future.
Ok, so it's not an investment in this sense, as long as it's used only for entertainment purposes.

Ok. Good. So if I use the macbook to write my job applications, that would make it an investment (a bad one, since a cheaper pc would have done the job)?

Anyways, lets just call it a purchase.

If being used to generate income or somehow cut costs in the long run, I would say it's an investment. Buying 2x as expensive shoes which will last you 3x as long as the pair you initially had in mind, could be seen as an investment.

However, buying a Mac for gaming purposes when already having a PS 3 will in most cases be far away from what I would call an "investment", I'll give you that.
