Inikon, because I'm stupid.

I registered the ID, not serial. It has been accepted, that's not the problem. The problem seems to be Itunes.

didn't work, DFU gave me a 2001 error

I tried restoring in different ways. It always gives me errors. I can only restore 3.0. So no luck there so far.
The problem I'm having is that itunes says i have an invalid sim. It could be offcourse because i have a 2g iphone. But i'm using a belgian carrier. Anyway I'm considering buying the 3g... but im afraid they are going to release a new version of the phone in june.

Because for some reason DFU won't work unless you download something from the ADC site.

Fixing DFU mode on 10.5.6

As noted previously OS X 10.5.6 introduced a bug that affected the use of DFU mode. with some Macs. There have been previously published hacks and techniques to fix this, but here is another method that can be used to temporarily restore DFU functionality in order to use QuickPwn or PwnageTool.

You will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future - http://developer.apple.com/mac/
Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 - this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
Unplug non-vital USB equipment, such as external DVD writers, USB scanners, USB mass storage devices, at the most leave a Keyboard and Mouse connected.
Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg from within the disk image
Reboot your system!
Perform necessary DFU activity with QuickPwn or PwnageTool.

Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55”
Intall IOUSBFamily-327.4.0.pkg from within the disk image
Reboot your system!
Reattach your USB peripherals.

So download the 10.5.5 image and run that and then try. I just tried restoring to 2.2 but it didn't work and I was stuck with a screen telling me to connect to iTunes. I just restored from the 3.0 ipsw instead and that worked, try doing that.

Yes I have not had any luck with DFU on 10.5.6 unless you use the 10.5.5 USB drivers. Warning: Do not plug in any USB devices while using the drivers, or expect a crash.

Mine did the same thing. After I uploaded the new firmware in Organizer on my Mac, it said that it wasn't able to activate it, to use iTunes.

But, iTunes said the phone couldn't be activated.

I swore for a little while, then registered the 40 character id code that Organizer was showing me on the developer site.

Then I plugged it into my Windows Vista PC, and iTunes wanted to restore it, and I let it. A notification popped up on the phone saying it was now activated. It put all my music, contacts, calendar, etc. back on it, and about an hour later, it was ready to go, with 3.0 on it and is working fine (with a crash here and there) now.

It seems like my mistake was not having it already registered on the Developer site, but once I did that, everything went smoothly.

Thought I'd add my near-bricking experience, it might help someone:

I got my beta via official channels, did the UUID registering through the Dev Connection web site and proceeded to update via iTunes (not Xcode as recommended in the Dev Connection instructions) all seemed well as it finished but the phone restarted and began to cycle the apple screen every 6 minutes and now iTunes didn't see it. Other apps (iPhoto) did see the phone most of the time though, even though the phone did nothing but show the Apple logo.

I thought I was in trouble but I went into xCode and it saw the phone and I restored it through there following the Dev Conn instructions. (like I should have done the first time I guess) When the "Do you want to use this device for development?" popped up, I ignored it and went back into iTunes (it now saw the phone) my music, apps and such were gone but I restored from a backup made yesterday. All seems well, SW Version is 3.0 and my apps and such are loaded back on. I have to resort all the apps but at least the phone works again.

Perhaps my problem was unique but if not, I hope the above helps out.

I think the problem is that people aren't taking the time to read the documentation and being sure to properly install.

You need to have the device registered in the iPhone Dev Portal. You need to start the process in Xcode, not iTunes. You need to set it up for development and install the beta in Xcode. All of that without iTunes running. When through all those steps, then you open iTunes.

Anyone that just tried to jump ahead and install the beta through iTunes, try to work your way backwards through those steps like the poster above me did.

So I got Itunes on my PC to recognize it, it downloaded the latest (stable) firmware and wanted to restore it. Restoring it didn't work and it gave me a 1013 error.

Then I plugged it back into my mac and same thing happened. At least it got recognized by Itunes. The phone itself finally changed the screen from the apple logo to the plug. But now what?

If you forgot to register it first, connect the iPhone and open Xcode. It will ask if you want to use the device for testing, select yes, select the device from the list, UDID will be visible.

Copy UDID into developer portal for adding devices.

Open iTunes. It will be fine then

I opened xcode, start up screen comes up, but it doesn't recognize Iphone. I'm new to Macs so I'm not sure what to do in xcode. What do I have to do once xcode opens with its start up menu? Is it supposed to automatically recognize the phone?

Isn't there another way to override the restore to previous system function in Itunes and just let it restore to the 3.0?

When you say stable do you mean 2.2.1? If so, you can't downgrade to 2.2.1 (well you can, but you need to DFU and use Quickpwn.) I got that same error when I tried.

Try restoring to the latest beta. In iTunes, option-click on restore and a dialogue box will pop up for you to choose your .ipsw. Choose 3.0 and you should be good to go (remember to register.)

lost,
IT WORKED!!! IT F*&^%NG WORKED :D
using Itunes on PC somehow 'woke up' my Iphone and made it recognizable again. Then I was able to option click (thanks lost!) to restore 3.0 instead 2...

Thanks everyone for your time and input!!! :D :D :D

Ah ha, it seems this will work on PC. I tried it on my Macbook but had no success but someone else said it worked on their PC. I'm going to try to see if it'll work in Parallels/Boot Camp when I get home tonight and see if that's why. I'll probably go back to 3.0 but I want to be sure I know how to downgrade in case I need to.

I bet you'll think twice before you play with your iPhone in such a way with beta software!!

Lesson learned maybe? :p
