If your computer is still under warranty apple will replace the battery for you for free if it is swelling.

They may even replace it out-of-warranty if it is swelling. Apple and most other manufactures are very sensitive about battery and power adapter issues, especially those that might have fire, smoke, or sparks involved.

I took a swelling battery which was way out of warranty into a Apple Store, and the Genius told me he couldn't let me leave the store with that battery! He exchanged it for a new one.:)

Good to know for the future!

Lucky you :)

But unfortunately, there are no Apple stores here. My computer is more than 2 yrs old, and hence out of warranty. I called AppleCare and the exec said that Apple treats batteries as consumables and hence can't be replaced for free. I asked him what will Apple do if it explodes in my lap, and he laughed saying the batteries are designed in a way which keeps them from exploding. I gave him references of Apple Discussions where consumers were given a free replacement but he said he hasn't heard of anything like that.

The battery functions perfectly fine with 4+ hours of backup and no warnings. So I've just kept it as it is.

to sum up, my battery is swelling, pushing the cover and the trackpad.

this is exactly what happened to me too! everybody on this topic talked about bending the tabs to fix the gap near the edge of the unibody, but how about fixing a gap near the latch? bending the tabs seems to not having any effect over that side of the cover :(
