The iPad Pro 10.5" is everything I was waiting for : smaller bezels, a screen that actually feels like it belongs in its time, lightning fast performance, a size that's just right.

I've mostly been postponing it juuuuust a little more every month, because, well, that's one way to save money. But now, with my decision to change my iPhone 6 battery for cheaps and waiting on the 2018 iPhone X plus (only 9 months to go), I feel like I need at least one iOS device that's not laggy and dated.

Is there something that SHOULD put me off buying it ?

EDIT : my expectations are : multitasking for weight loss monitoring and spreadsheets for meal prep, reading and typing a lot on reddit, twitter and messaging, watching netflix in a way that the sound is never muffled, never wasting time on things loading. Being able to multitask with side-by side apps.

I have an iPad Mini 2 now. I'm looking for a definitive future proof gadget that will last me at least 4 years of updates.

I recently got one.

depends on how your gonna use it.

I got mine as my 4G contract came for renewal and well at almost same cost per month got this.

I not used it much but I do intend to use it as my work machine if can work out few minor things on it first.

as it is just as fast if not faster than my current work machine, a 2012 MacBook Air 11.6"
OK so I loose usb but I dont think it a big issue for my work as mostly web based anyway.

plus got one these so can still use usb.

You actually going to use it for “work”? Need a usage scenario first. I literally just got back from the store after playing with the 10.5 for an hour. Tried the 12.9 last week and it felt too big. The 10.5 is a mite too small for my needs. I’m back to the 12.9 again. Haha. Except I was planning on getting the zagg slim book for the 10.5 which adds a bit of bulk. The Smart Keyboard I can get used to eventually so the larger device makes more sense.

I’m still waiting for at least 4 months until rumors come out about the big 2018 iPad Pro changes.

If all you need is a modern iOS device for consumption how about the 9.7. It’s amazing how slimmed down it is. I thought it was a mini at first. Way cheaper too. That way you have something to play around with until the new ones arrive and you can take a slight hit and sell it at that time.

Right NOW I don’t think I’d buy the 10.5 Pro. The next update promises to be pretty significant and that’s quite a large chunk of cash to part with only to have buyers remorse in a few months.

Oh no, iPads are for twitter and Netflix and reading ebooks.

I think the pencil and the keyboard are terrible, and actually a testimony to how clueless/uninterested Apple is to deliver on the Pro moniker.

If I wanted a tablet for productivity - I wouldn’t even think of it, I’d get a laptop.
I wonder why you can’t code apps for the ipad ON the iPad though...

Well I’m not wading into that work vs no work argument. :). Let’s just say I’m planning on making an iPad Pro my main portable machine while keeping an iMac at home.

For your needs then the 9.7 Air sounds pretty perfect actually. So cheap these days too. Buy one , play with it until the new pros are out and then decide.

If the iPad Pro is everything you've been waiting for then why are you still waiting? That doesn't make sense to me. That's like continuing to look for your car keys after you've found them.

BTW, there is no such thing as "future proof" let alone "definitively future proof".

If I had an office job, definitely, but I’m a subtitler. The only intellectual craftsy humanities job you can’t exactly do on Mac (expansions to Final cut are convoluted and needlessly expensive and nobody uses them around me so any problem, you’re on your own)

I’ve always fantasised about a subtitling solution on ipad though.

iPad aside that sounds like an awesome job. Never ever met a subtitler before. So what does it entail? Listen to English audio and put the English words up on screen with the right timing ? Or a different language?

Ever throw in something totally random in there as a joke?

At a large company I worked at, an employee put something totally random in a document as a joke and it slipped through and got out the door - he was on the street within an hour of its discovery. He would have been in a world of hurt even if it had been caught internally.

I don't see any evidence in your post that you need or even really want this device. Certainly it will perform for four years, but you won't care if you have no real use for it.

I never throw anything random cause that would be unprofessional. I do multilingual as well as closed-captioned. I translate into my own native French. There's plenty of room to get creative yet stay accurate ;) There's a time code on the stock video which you sync to your first subtitle and then the push of a button assigns an IN and OUT time codes (the time at which both happen onscreen). There are rules to follow and you should respect the editing's pace, and learn to condense everything so that it looks you are following the script closely, althought that's not possible. Also you must be aware of the depth in both represented space and level of narration so that the subtitles never feel off or odd, and last but not least you have to have redactional skills so it all flows smoothly because it's easy to translate single shots and then you watch it and something is lost in translation or doesn't quite roll off the tongue. It's a balancing act and you need to be a good translator, a good technician since it is a technical job with pro software (your brain makes your fingers move automatically after some time) and a decent writer.

The hard part is having to count frames all the time, watch and rewatch the same short sequences all the time, having to pay attention to small numbers while still watching the video and subtitles so you're sure the norms are respected (your eyes are like a chameleons) and repetite quick keyboard and mouse gestures + fast typing means you arms hurt from knuckle to finger at the end of the day. Kind of like a software developer.

Yeah exactly. How would you like private jokes in your subtitles on your paid service ?
The job IS a redactional job. BUT when doing live captionning, there are inevitable, hilarious bloopers.

I don't see who would NEED an iPad when real computers exist.
As far as wanting it, I want it so bad I visited 4 different stores before Christmass to toy with it because it's amazing. But I don't want to spend 900€ on the version I really want, or make a compromise on the GPS because I know it's been so useful on my Mini.

I bought the 2017 Ipad and then was sorry when the new 10.5 came out, the 2017 does fine for me but I would like a bigger screen and the features of the 10.5 i know if i bought one now i'd be sorry when the new one comes out with no home button and bigger screen real estate, so i'm waiting. I would be buying the top of the line 512gb model with 4g, so its a big chunck of change

Netflix could be a pro.
Some sales may still be happening, look around.

No free office editing could be a con
The fact that meltdown and Spectre are hanging around ( are they truly fixed without engineering new chips?) could be a reason to wait on major tech purchases from all sides until we learn more from industry.

THIS.

This is actually great advice, and a good reason to not buy computers right now.

Easy. Wait for the 10.5" Pro v2. Why?
  • Even smaller bezels
  • Face ID
  • OLED

I'd be holding off, the 10.5 is the middle of the road. I like the mini best, it just fits in the hand perfect. Pros offer 0 over the other models in the apple range, pencil support is less than useful so unless you want the speakers wait for the 2018 iPad and go with that. You'll get the best cpu and it will be much cheaper.

Don’t remember reading this anywhere. If the iPad Pro 10.5 goes bezelless, what effective screen size do you end up getting?

My dream IPP would be a new 11.7 inch iPad X. The 10.5 is a bit too small, the larger one a bit too unwieldy. There should be a seeet spot right in the middle.

Fascinating. Thanks. Never really knew how the whole subtitling thing worked. Pretty interesting career.

Effective size is what makes me unimpressed with iPhone X. It’s like NFC was on iPhone 6 (in France) : useless for a year and then some. When iOS 12 and apps do use the screen space sensibly, the the form factor will be amazing but hardware will have moved on. I’d be worried to buy an iPad pro with rounded edges and get the screen estate of a 9.7” tablet.

Unless there’s a massive sale on the 2017 pros, I’ll get whatever 2018 iPad they come up with. iPad X better not pull an iphone X with the screen size.

I love my 10.5 but I'm hoping for the '11.7' or whatever to come out (if it does) and or a Mini Pro.

If it was September/October I'd suggest getting the 10.5, but now with the potential of a whole new size/style being announced in the next few months (hopefully), I would say hang on and see what comes out/see if someone's selling off a 9.7 Pro cheaply - I think quite a lot of people suddenly upgraded to the 10.5. Although if you're not bothered about the pencil or keyboards, the non pro 9.7 might be a cheaper but up-to-date alternative.

The X is an interesting beast. Now I got mine on November 3rd and since I’m consulting in India at the moment had to pay a fairly hefty premium. Opened it , set it up and put it right back in the box. I knew I’d eventually switch but was too attached to the 7+ and kept using that one instead. Interesting timing on this post because last night I bit the bullet, factory wiped the 7+ and switched over. Now I’m in love.

Effective siZe is a bit of a misnomer and so is “5.8” inches. It’s not really 5.8 let’s face it. But here’s the deal, I’ve done multiple multiple head to head comparisons. Email, Twitter, browser, this very thread and the X displays EXACTLY the same amount of information as my beloved 7+ in a much smaller form factor. That’s good enough for me.

I don’t think there’s any going back to me now. I’ve missed having a smaller phone and this checks all the boxes.

The mind just needs to get used to the illusion that it’s smaller. I KNOW it’s not but still, I was reluctant to even reply here using the X because the mind says it’s a tiny phone. Personal preference for me is that I do prefer a wider phone , wider keyboard as opposed to the tall skinny fad. I’ll get used to it. But one thing is for certain. In terms of content displayed on the screen, it is identical to the 7+.

If they change the form factor of the iPad X to have rounded edges I’d almost guarantee that you’ll see the same information in a smaller form factor or, my preference , a larger screen in the same form factor. Kinda like the X I guess. Rumored X+ has the 7+ body with a larger screen but I know I won’t be upgrading. A phone has to be a phone and I don’t want to carry a mini tablet around.

I’m still looking at the + a bit longingly. Replying to this post would have been easier on that. Wider keyboard, more room to breathe on the screen. It truly was like an iPad mini but hey. The X is my phone. If I want an iPad I’ll buy an iPad.

You just described my dream setup. 11.7 laptop replacement. Mini pro with pencil support for general couch browsing and note taking. A digital moleskine!!
