Better opt for a screen protector, if you are concerned about scratches, I used my iPhone 7 without screen protector and there are little micro abrasions on screen which shows in certain lights.

I may get hammered on this but should we have to put a almost $1,200 phone in a case> and slap on a screen protector? Isn’t part of the “joy” of these expensive devices the tactile feel of them in hand and the slim form factor? If I wanted to carry around a palm Treo and throw it at cats I’d find Bill and Ted.....

Owned every flagship (8/8+ not flagship) iPhone never used a case, upgrade yearly. All my iphones are scratched to **** by the time the new one comes out, and no ****s given here.

It’s a phone that is mass produced, not a piece of art.

My X is already scratched because my dog knocked it off the table, do I care? nope.

Agree with this thread. I was think the other day after seeing all the scratch complaints that many on here need Lexapro and some cognitive behavioral therapy.

I disagree. Starting with the iPhone 6 for screens have become easier to scratch.

I never had a single scratch on any smartphone until I got an iPhone 6. And then my iPhone 6 plus got a few too.

I think its the coating they use. Its like butter.

I've never been a screen protector person. But since the iPhone 6, I've started using one.

I will just say that most people, including my wife, seem to be in the habit of placing their devices down face first.

When questioned as to the why of that most people say because they don't want their screen to scratch or something to hit their screen and damage it. For my wife, it's also privacy and I suspect that's probably a larger reason for a number of people here.

In any case, I've never subscribed to this reasoning. I have an obession with getting dust on my hands and I can literally feel the dust and debris on many surfaces, including tables in restaurants. For me, placing my phone or device face down is inviting all that stuff to scratch my screen.

If anything is going to scratch on my device I would much prefer it be the back. So I set my devices down on their backs, preferably with something between them and the surface they are laying on.

To date, other than scratches I know I have put there myself because of my own idiocy I've only had one scratch that I am aware of. And it took hard light from the sun at a very specific angle to even see that it was there.

So, if people are complaining about scratches on their screens I would argue that this is a result of placing your phone face down on a surface. If you don't even bother to make sure the surface you set your device down on that way is clean before you do it, well I can't help you.

If your wife is placing her phone face down all the time... I'VE GOT SUM BAD NEWZ.

It isn’t an issue, it’s just how materials behave in this universe, phones aren’t made of adamantium.

Well it can be an issue, it is a trade off. They have made the glass softer each year as they are trying to decrease the chances of it breaking, but in doing so, the glass is more susceptible to scratches. I would prefer they go the other way, as I don't really drop my phone. I would rather have less chance of scratches and more chance of breaking, but I am in the minority.

The reality is the user causes the scratches. I see these posts or threads where others are baffled how their iPhone display obtained a scratch. The result is that something had to have physical contact with the display in some form of a dragging to cause the scratch. Cases can also be a problem where if debris gets caught inside, it can cause scratching as well.

The only real solution is to use a screen protector or just accept the fact that displays will never obtain micro abrasions across the displays, even the ones that you can't see unless under certain lighting conditions.

I clean my displays daily with a microfiber cloth and even microfiber cloths can be a problem if debris gets trapped inside when trying to clean the display.
I stopped using microfiber cloths for this reason. I only use disposable products to clean my screen.

My GF uses oil removal wipes for her face. One day I had the idea to try them on my iPhone and haven’t looked back since.

I do use a cloth to wet the surface if my device is more dirty then normal. I only use the sheets when wiping the screen.

So I got my iPhone a week ago and bought a screen protector. Unfortunately it didn't arrive in time for a business trip I had to take on Monday so I spent most of the week with no screen protector on. After reading this thread I decided to take a look at my screen. Sure enough, I had a LOT of scratches...and they were deep ones that you could easily feel with your fingernail so it wasn't just the oleophobic coating. I was trying to remember what the heck could have caused that. I do have a case on it, and the case extends slightly over the screen, plus I never lay it face down. It spent most of the time either in my front pants pocket or on my desk face up. Only thing I can think is one time the phone fell out of the rental car cup holder when I was taking a turn and landed on the passenger floor mat. Maybe there was some sand there? I never had a passenger in my car so if there was sand I didn't see it. Very bummed out.

Never used a case or screen protector more than a few days since the 4s. I try them out now and then but I’ve never been able to get used to either so I always toss them.

All of my phones had micro abrasions but never any massive scratches. I don’t treat them special, they are tools that were meant to be used. I’ve dropped them, dinged them, thrown them. Some metal dents and dings but the glass has always been a champ for me. I actually really liked the glass back of the 4s so I’m happy to see it return with the X.

Yep, so that means even a tiny particle of sand could scratch your screen. Sand has a hardness of 7 (quartz), and anything with a hardness above 6 will be able to scratch the screen, even if it is a very small speck.

While true I'm probably just not following your logic.

They are walking the line of scratch vs shatter resistance.

Plastic screens don't shatter when impacted but they scratch easily. Sapphire screens/faces dont scratch as easy however they can be more prone to shattering from impact (when compared equally). In the middle (leaning toward the higher end of the Mohs scale) you'll find smart phone screens.
