You mean like they were in Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, etc. What a novel idea!!! (And, frankly, one I've been pushing a long time.)

I have Big Sur on one MacBookPro and High Sierra and Mojave on two Mac Pro's 5,1 (these are incompatible with Big Sur)
We'll see what Big Sur 11.6 brings. The x.2 versions of High Sierra and Mojave weren't that good either. But especially High Sierra 10.13.6 is rock solid.

In no particular order (some are more important than others):
  • Opening the lyrics panel in Music clears the active filter
  • When shutting down or restarting a 2020 iMac, half of the screen stays in True Tone and the other half doesn't
  • In Maps, when you go to Directions, click an address and Select All, when you type it appends to the end instead of overtyping the selection
  • In Music, sorting by Album by Artist and quitting/restarting returns to Album sort (regression from iTunes)
  • The infamous DumpGPURestart issue, requiring the whole computer to be force powered off (this doesn't seem to affect everyone, but once you're affected it's utterly aggravating)
  • Taking a screenshot of Notification Centre results in a file with a lot of empty space (this actually got worse with the move from 10.15 to 11)
  • In TV, pressing the first letter of a show name doesn't select that show (regression from iTunes)
  • Not technically a bug, but DVD Player has lost the option to disable Dynamic Range Compression, making music DVDs in particular sound horrendous
  • Using Page Up/Page Down in Music doesn't update the scroll bars until you move the mouse
  • Using Tab to complete filenames in Terminal doesn't always work (was fine in 10.14)
  • Finder and About This Mac often disagree on the amount of available free space
There's one I hadn't got around to reporting that does seem to be fixed in 11.2 though: Music no longer acts as if you'd clicked 'Back' ~30 seconds after you start playing a song.

both of my macs are doing really well; i use the macbook for day-to-day, including some graphics work; my imac is for logic pro and final cut. everything i need to do, i can, without issue.

to be fair, i don't do most of the things you mentioned, altho most of them seem pretty minor; i have no such issue with screen on my 2019 imac. anyway, hope you get it all sorted out.

A little while ago I read a blog from a developer that worked at Apple explaining why they don’t go back to fix old bugs. It was informative and logical. Can’t for the life of me find it now though, and if I could would post it here. Does anybody have a link?
 
Many times I feel that MacOS has taken the turn on Win8 highway. Now they are shifting gears and gaining speed on that. There are a more and more small businesses that have started to use Macs. There are a ton of features that can be incorporated to make the MacOS more productive. Wonder if :apple: will realize it.
 
1) Catalina is to Big Sur as Vista was to Win 7. A creditable first attempt...
2) Big Sur has fixed a number of annoying bugs that Catalina had, like the Activity Monitor losing its tabs and DNS having to be flushed on a regular basis (those are just the ones that got me).
3) Other OSs also have a yearly release cycle, like Ubuntu and Linux Mint.
4) If you're happy with Yosemite, Mavericks, High Sierra, Mojave, etc, then stick with it.

If your software breaks on a new OS release then you were most likely doing stuff against Apple's coding recommendations.

They give developers several years worth of notice of impending changes, any dev crying that they weren't given notice of upcoming change is either not paying attention or incompetent and/or not maintaining their software.
 
Actually "Snow Leopard" introduced a lot of new features and programming api. The "only bug fixes" was just a PR move.
 
He has a point.

By the time Big Sur is "solid", around late summer, a new MacOS will be coming and we start over full of a bugs again. People want the new features and new hardware will usually not work with the previous MacOS.

big sur is pretty solid right now (for me, anyway). and every version of the OS is a work-in-progress; there's no moment when it's ever 'perfect, done'.

Security can be delivered via combo updates just like good old days, retaining same OS version.

Not just Apple either, just when you get settled on piece of software-“Wait we're adding AI!” The amount of time to renew and upgrade every thing to be compatible with say “Big Sir” or another is insane. Before you dismiss me as old with no computer skills, I have been on Macs since 1985. Ok, I am old too sorry!🙂

There has been a sector-wide phenomena of constant new updates that add nothing but bells and whistles but simultaneously degrade productivity or product enjoyment. The latest incarnation of the music player (used to be iTunes, now 'Music') which won't sync properly or bolloxes one's playlists or music that...hmm! is NOT purchased through Apple. Funny that. It's put album art on the wrong albums, refuses to sync. Then when you look at Apple's support site for a clue, mostly what you find are 'how-to sync'. Yes- I know. I've been doing this since 2010.

apple lists what's new with each update; usually bug fixes, tweaks, security enhancements... & sometimes new features. it's called...progress!

itunes got so much hate over the years; people complained it was bloated. apple pared it down to 'music'... and people complain it's not enough. 🙄 'music' seems better (to me), and syncs fine here.

if you need help with an issue (ie music sync), start a thread on this very forum... and the (mostly) useful community here might be able to help.

i have excellent hearing, and have heard no bells or whistles with any mac OS update. 🤔
