It’s not that hard. If you make a general comment not directed at anyone in particular just post. If you are responding to, especially in a busy thread, countering a specific post, directed at some one you disagree with or want to share agreement with, you should use the reply button which lets the person know you are replying to them specifically, and it let’s everyone else know what motivated you to make the reply you did. :)
Sounds about right to me.

As Huntn pointed out, if they're replying to you, they obviously intend for you to see that reply

Usually a reply includes a quote from the original message. This is helpful when there have been pages of replies after the message so you know exactly what they are replying to.

That reply is then added to the forums bell where you can see all specific replies to your post, as long as they have quoted it.

Am I missing something?

And my whole point is people are NOT doing that (see my example in post 21). Even if there are no other people that have posted, people should still use the reply button or a tag, otherwise people like me who don't auto-sub every single thread will not be notified of their reply (and even if I auto-subbed, their reply could still get lost in a sea of other reply notifications on some threads).

Don't understand. circatee was quoted and therefore that post will show up in circatees' forum updates. What am I missing?

🤦🏼‍♂️ The example wasn't THE post, it was IN the post. I clearly describe and even screenshot it in the post.
