Welp - I've uninstalled Plex on our Mac mini media server and as we have an Apple TV, I've just installed the official JellyFin app. It doesn't feel nearly as polished or as feature rich as Plex but I'm so over being forced to accept more and more online streaming garbage and the push towards social media.

I'll soldier on with JellyFin as I think this is the straw that broke the camels back.

I still miss Boxee...

what features are you missing?

Am I totally missing something with infuse? You connect it with your plex library and then on the AppleTV app you have to click Plex>TV Shows (or movies, whatever you have it titled)>then click my movie. All these extra clicks for what? I don’t understand how their ui is any better.

The question is: does it still play movies with the audio slightly out of sync like the current Plex Apple TV app does?

If so, then this update is pointless. There’s no reason to just update the skin if you don’t fix the issues people have been complaining about for the last 4 years.

any one tested jellyfin/emby if its any better or worse?
It is a lot easier to install the Infuse app and then point it to your media files. There really is no need to install Plex, Jellyfin or Emby, unless you like configuring a server with all the options or need remote server access.

Edited to add: I access my server remotely using Tailscale on my Apple TV (without the need of Plex) and it doesn't require me to open up ports or put my server at risk.

As a long time Plex user, I truly wish they would stop messing around with the app. Over time it's become so bloated and full of 'their' junk. I don't want all the on demand stuff. I want it for my local content only.

Have you actually disabled the Plex content in your account settings?

It's incredible the number of people who complain about the Plex ad-supported free content being on their screen when you can literally turn it off.

I just want to know how they have access to all 3 seasons of Squid Game 👀

It's just a program search. The content isn't necessarily there on Plex. You can watch-list / rate / review content even if you are seeing it somewhere else. Plex has the ability to tell you see what streaming providers have a show/movie available, and in some cases let you select the option and be launched into the other service and taken to the page.

I ave no idea how so many people can have out of sync audio, for me it works perfect. Loves the metadata management and adding posters.
Could I ask for something, it would be the ability to remove movies and TV-Shows from "Recently added", or have them automatically removed from there when I have watched them.
Looking forward to this update and never watch VOD and remove it from library and the A-TV app.
Just to be clear, as a Plex lifetime supporter myself, when you stream local 4K content from your main Mac plex server... computer/media streamer, you never, ever. get audio sync issues or straight up audio drop outs ever? There are thousands of posts on the plex forums with enthusiasts like us wanting Plex to work, but it just doesn't. What are you doing differently? (The answer is nothing and you are most likely streaming 1080p content)

And you don't need to buy the "pro" features for it to work.

well you do if you want your stuff to play correctly!
if you're not fussy about Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and additional video format support then stick with the free version. if you need those you'll need the pro version as those require a licence fee.

Really? please tell us how in this new app

Login to the plex web app and click the wrench icon to access settings.

On the left hand side of the settings select “Online media sources” (it’s the second option under account) and turn everything to disabled.

All media that is not your own will now be disabled on every plex app for your account.

If my TV had a native JellyFin client I'd jump immediately over to it.
Have you tried Infuse?

Plex lifetime user, Infuse lifetime user.
Plex server installed on my QNAP NAS, Plex app and Infuse app on my Apple TV.
I like Plex more than Infuse in two categories: library management (filter, sorting etc) and subtitles support (position, etc). Infuse is better for video (especially for 4K content)/audio (especially for "non native" audio tracks, like DTS) quality.
so I add my content to Plex server and play HD content from Plex and 4K content from Infuse.

[EDIT]
and count +1 for people that have issue with Plex. audio out of sync, 4K video stuttering, etc. same devices involved, no issue with Infuse, so it's definitively a Plex issue.

You would think after all these years something like filtering by watched and unwatched would be available in infuse but it is not

yeah. And I would expect stuff like this (and sorting, etc) in Apple own TV app. I've purchased over 230 movies and the Ux sucks.
you basically have only "recently added" (25 items sorted descending date added), "Movies" (all items sorted alphabetically) and the silly genre categories (also sorted alphabetically).
no filter, no watched/unwatched, nothing.
the Mac OS TV app is slightly better, but the Apple TV ones sucks.

Your own content has no money in it for them. 💰💰💰

Recommendation for owned collections: use the orange icon "Computers" app. No ads. No vod. Simple (Apple designed and works with Apple DRM'd content too) UI that harkens back to the original AppleTV UI created by the Lord Jobs...

full

Home sharing still "just works" and Computers brings all of the owned media together in one simple app.

In my household, Computers is the second most used app of all AppleTV apps... right behind the incredible Channels app for live & DVR television. All of the streamer options- including the AppleTV app are all well down "most popular" lists here.
Great that it works for you, but two downsides - the format needs to match exactly & the Channels app subs costs ongoing cash.

Plex Pass & Infuse lifetime (including the DVR/Channels) costs less that what, 2 years of subs to Channels & plays anything chucked at it.

Close, but no cigar.

Channels can be had for free. I choose to pay the optional $80/yr for a very rich whole home DVR capability.

And yes, the Computers app wants formats that Apple software plays... the very same formats that come from the Apple Store. There is some effort- ONCE- to convert some content to that but then it "just works" forever.

No need to make this some contest though. If Plex or Infuse is "closer" for you and others, good for you. I offered the idea in response to someone expressing frustration with Plex's relentless marketing push of VOD, etc. The "no cigar" options I use has none of that.

While they have bloated the UI with THEIR junk, it is a simple matter to remove them as pinned items. I don't see those things... only my server's content.

Strange why you post 'your' solution on a Plex topic? Plex is a full-blown DVR also.

Granted computers is an option as is Channels, has hee haw to do with Plex though.

There is no competition, show me where Computers does remote access?

Again, someone else WITH Plex was griping about the Plex marketing, so I shared an alternative that doesn't pound them with all that marketing. There is no contest here saying <this> and only <this> is best for everyone because there is no such thing. If Plex makes you happy, good for you. The person to which I replied was not happy with Plex marketing.

However, that offered, if I wanted more remote access, I could dump the same files into Channels and access it anywhere (without the Plex marketing VOD and pushing ads, etc) or do what I more commonly do and just sync a selection of my owned media to my devices before I leave for any travel and then enjoy that.

If I wanted random access to all of it without any pre-planning for what I might want to watch, I can stream anything from Channels to wherever I am and/or I could turn the library of owned media on in my own cloud in my NAS and enjoy it anywhere.

What if someone doesn't have a NAS? Since I have gone to the trouble of putting it all in Apple friendly formats- mostly HEVC (h.265), I can store it all on a relatively small portable drive and take the drive with me. And that will work whether I have internet/cellular or not, wherever I happen to be, including while flying on planes with no wifi or when at sea.

But again, to each his own. I'm glad you are happy with your option. There's plenty of tasty fish in this sea. Yours is very popular. Some people like you love it more than all other options. But there are other options. And other people may feel differently than you.

I’m holding on the betas, the same way I do on the apple betas, for everything to be ironed out, I’ll reserve judgement until then, just enjoy the banter for those that are willing to jump in head first.

Seriously tho, yes there’s loads of options. Plex is my preference after trying loads of others & yes, it can be a bit crap at times, but luckily Infuse can plug the gaps & unlike Plex the Infuse mods are active on this forum.

If someone doesn’t use a NAS, then it’s highly likely they’ve got a DAS, maybe too large to cart about on a hard drive, again no comparison.

I could use Roon in place of Plexamp, or the multitude of other stuff out there, but I don’t see what it brings to the convo about offering alternates on a thread specifically talking about Plex & upcoming changes to their player (rewritten server comes later)

I have to thank you tho, you’ve inspired me to go to a Honda forum & post how much better beemers are, after all, they’re all cars with wheels, right bro?

Enjoy the rest of your morning/day/night.

I understand about beta releases , what I have a problem with though are basic functions that are not in the beta that are already in the current app, there really is no good excuse for that

It appears on the new Plex Experience this is not possible.

I'm talking about your actual Plex account settings, not the app settings.

Edit: Original v1 Android mobile beta of the new interface. Should be the same on iOS. If you disable the ad-supported content the options go away. Not sure how this is handled on the TV interface variant (haven't tried side-loading the app on my Shield).

True but nearly every time there is an update, things I have unpinned frequently returned. I simply do not want this. I've moved over to JellyFin now so the issue is moot.

I realised after I posted this that we don't actually use the apps on our LG OLED TV (and can't because I also disagree with LG's ToS - but that's a rant for another day). We use our TV exclusively with our Apple TV 4K so I found the official JellyFin app on there and am using that now. Thanks for the reply though.
