Hm, before I ditch my Mac Mini HTPC, I would like to know if Plex will play back HD content without transcoding on these Apple TVs. That's the biggest issue I have with Plex Server/Clients - the server needs to be beefy, and so does the client. :/

So, I remain cautiously optimistic.

Plex is releasing only a client-app for ATV. You would still need the server.

I do understand that. Sorry, should've clarified - what I meant was that in addition to the server, the client too needs to be beefy to support playback without transcoding.
All things being equal, would this ATV allow for Plex playback with quality equivalent to the Mac Mini?

I don't use Plex currently, but I did use it before. The client doesn't need to be beefy at all. The client lets the server know what kind of stream it needs, and the server then serves up the exact stream it needs by transcoding and converting on the fly as needed. The client doesn't do any transcoding or converting. The client merely receives and plays the stream. At least that's how it works with fairly default settings.

Where does one begin with all this good stuff? I'll just jump in and add my peanuts to the gallery.

The new ATV is a nice update to a behind the times media player. It is even nicer that Apple has seen the light and allows (if nothing changes drastically) for apps like PLEX and VLC. In theory, the newest offering should by hardware alone, be able to handle these apps well and possibly improved performance of streaming apps (Netflix etc.) based on ability to buffer better.

What this new ATV can't do (or rather wont) is offer up true HD audio and in DTS-Master. Assuming PLEX can do its own magic, at least we'll still see DTS core being played from files that have only DTS-Master included. We wont see 4k at least on this incarnation either.

So, is the ATV worth it? Yes if you have already invested in ATV and *like* what it has to offer.

For others of us, who are not so married to Apple eco system, there are adventures to be had elsewhere. I recently started to dabble with the NVidia Shield TV. While it wont do "Apple" so to speak, I get instead the Android counterpart and far more flexibility. The remote seems to be well liked but I find it too primitive or over simplistic. I consider this device to be far more bang for the buck than the ATV with all it can do and that includes 4k. Like the ATV, it doesn't presently do HD audio simply because NVidia didn't acquire the licensing. What does set it apart is that it is capable of handling DTS-Master and Dolby's counterpart if* they acquired the license (ATV wont have this). Last negative, presently out put is at 60 hrtz so 24p movies are converted. Again, we may see NVidia listen to its request board/forum (as they did with other items) and fix this for true 23.9xx/24p playback. Last, it comes with PLEX and you can install Kodi!

If you are really interested in PLEX or Kodi (XBMC), yes the Mac Mini is not a bad choice at all as it can do other things too. Unfortunately, between the EFI and OSX, there is no HD audio streams to be had (Apple's decision). If you want HD audio, your Mini can still provide it with PLEX or Kodi if you change the OS. Either Windows or Linux on the Mini, running PLEX or Kodi will work. I personally can only speak for Kodi at this time.

All said and done - strictly for my tastes and it is subjective
#1 Mac Mini for pure playback capability when using PLEX or Kodi
#2 Nvidia Shield TV for flexibility and output but no Apple eco system.
#3 ATV ideal choice for those who like the Apple eco system and don't care about HD audio and other matters.

I don't expect perfection...anymore! The Plex app for Samsung Smart TV has an issue with movie loudness (too low) that can only be adjusted if you turn on/force transcoding.

Not if your media is in the right format. I use a Mac mini as my server and 95% of my files are 720p or 1080p, in mkv container and h264/x264 format with DD or DTS audio.... all of them Direct Play and use almost no CPU usage to do it (1-2%). I can have 5-10 streams going simultaneously and the server won't break a sweat.

As of right now I think the new ATV will have to remux files in the mkv container to get them to work because according to the tech specs the mkv container isn't supported. But if they are h264/x264 format, from what I've read, the overhead to do that isn't that bad because the server isn't actually transcoding.

my issue with plex before is that it wouldn't catalogue my itunes library automatically. it was set to do so, but it never did it. i would have to go and update library manually. is this still an issue with capitan? maybe it was just me too. never saw anyone else having the same issue.

Released.

Was browsing purchased apps on an additional Apple TV and came across Plex - what a pleasant surprise. Screenshots look amazing!

Does plex modify video files? I've always used home sharing and all my content has been run through iflicks so it has all the metadata already. That being said I'd like to give the interface a try but don't want it fiddling with the files themselves.

So never having used Plex before and after a quick browse of the features, if I am not interested in anything other than streaming movies from my Mac to my Apple TV, is there any advantage to Plex (aside from it's good looking interface)?

Depends on your movies...whether they're all in iTunes, what file format. If they are exclusively iTunes purchases, you don't need Plex. If they are mkv/avi/etc from various sources, Plex is for you.

Plex claimed this is free(?)- but I downloaded a few days ago- SimpleX and it was $2.99- I'm confused.
I thought SimpleX was Plex app for Atv- how is this different?

Plex is great on Apple TV! I "cut the cord" a couple of years ago and stream everything. I use Plex mostly for it's channels feature to watch content from PBS, Discovery, History etc. I'm so happy it's available on ATV now.

SimpleX is a 3rd party app based on Plex...there is now a Plex app made by Plex.

Do you really need to name all your movie files "<move title>(year)" for Plex? I have about 1500 movies - that would suck!
