I've had both the 5.5 and 4.7 and my answer is yes. I love the bigger screen but prefer the form factor of the 4.7.

With rumours of a 5.8 inch iPhone 8 that may only have 5.1 inch usable screen would you still upgrade for the new features if it means you get less screen that you can use?

Outrageous If Apple does this.

#1. We already have a Touch Screen we don't need a Touch Bar
#2. Give us the full 5.8" useable space and 4K or 1440p Resolution.
#3. Please Notice that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 launched in Sept 2015 and has a 5.7" 1440p HDR OLED Display and Is still THINNER AND SMALLER than the 5.5" IPhone 7 Plus How ? Smaller Bezels and Frame. And still has a 3.5mm Jack. And a Stylus Tucked in.
Just let that Sink in.
#4. We need a Large Display Period I am Excited and willing to invest in a 5.8" IPhone 8 Pro if Not I'll stick with my 5.7" OLED Note 5 trust me OLED is worth it. but 5.1" is a Down grade.

Step back and think about all the cool things the touch bar could be though. You could have new multi tasking controls, music controls, even new gaming possibilities.

For 5.1" it still acceptable for me even though I still prefer 5.5" or bigger but if the new design & highest spec is drop on 5.1", I still will pick that 5.1" than others.

The much much much bigger question is whether people coming from the vastly more popular 4.7" phone are ok with it...

If I carried a purse like my wife, then I'd be ok with a plus sized phone. But I fall into the camp of "I don't want a bigger phone."

I think this is a VERY common sentiment!
I feel the same. However, the question seems to not be "do you want a bigger phone?" (an emphatic NO, for both of us), but rather "do you mind a larger screen... on a similarly sized phone?", to which I say: "Of course not! It's the phone size I want no larger; what possible issue could I have w/ the screen being larger through bezel shrink?".
Do you feel the same, or would you prefer the same 4.7" screen in a smaller form factor? (which actually doesn't sound terrible to me either, just less likely)

Absolutely, I feel the same. The bump in size from 5 to 6 was welcomed. The trend from regular to plus, is something that I cannot do. The question to me is, what does the market want? Plus size? Then we are screwed. That is why I wonder what is the best selling model, regular or plus?

I was under the impression that the rumors were for the regular sized phone. Frankly I believe it would be easier to engineer more tech into the plus size, using the 7 specs versus 7+ as an example. The following was my understanding:

I believe it will be like this too...
Which is PRECISELY what you & I want!
Instead of having to forego the coolest new features (1st OIS, then dual-cameras) because we choose not to use a comically large phone; this time around all the latest features will be packed into the size phone we prefer... luckily enough for the others (those that chose the Plus size); Apple was able to bump the screen up to 5.15"- hopefully that compromise of "meeting in the middle" sizewise delights them as much as it will us!

Note: though Plus made a larger % this time than in the last two cycles (no doubt, due to dual cameras), the 4.7" is still the top-seller.

I honestly wish the Edition had the same size overall as the Plus' and then expanded the screen/get rid of the bezels. Then it'd be amazingly big and beautiful. People who use the Plus phones don't really have a problem with the overall size of the phone. However, at the same time I'm kinda happy that they're keeping it simple with just one size. It probably would've been better if they just released a 7S, Edition, and Edition Plus; mainly because people are gonna mainly want the Edition, especially if it's only like a few hundred dollars more. No one's gonna give a **** about the 7S and 7S+ if there's an amazing/sleek/high-tech iPhone (Edition) being released alongside of them. Knowing that more people would want the Edition than the 7S and 7S+, they should just only have one regular size 7S, especially if they implement the dual camera system on the regular 7S also. Hm.. if they were only having one 7S and then two Edition sizes, then it would make sense why we're hearing rumors about Apple implementing the dual camera on the regular 7S...

I probably won't buy the 8 if less usable screen. Like to watch movies a lot on my 6s Plus. Even web usage would be harder with my aging eyes.

I'm sure there will be a Plus model of the iPhone 8 as well, sometime later. Samsung is making a 6.2" OLED screen for the Galaxy S8+ so I forsee Apple using a version of that for a potential 8 Plus. I wouldn't want to go back down in screen size. I already did that when I switched from my old Note 5 to the iPhone 7 Plus.

That isn't too bad of a downsize but 5.1 inches is ridiculous.

I had no idea Samsung was making 6.2 S8. I'm sure it will be a great phone, but that's just to large and doesn't seem practical to me. I don't care how innovative a 6.2 Phone is, that size would be a chore to carry daily. I definitely would be interested in seeing it first hand.

It's going to be almost bezeless and it's actually going to be the same size as the iPhone 7 plus but it will be mostly screen to screen.

Excellent point. I own the Plus now and it's perfect for me. Definitely interested to see what the Galaxy S8 will look like.

I find the Otterbox Defender with holster works very well for the iPhone 7 Plus.

I'm fine with the Plus. Do I wish the screen was bigger though, yes. The bezels do need to be slimmed down. Let's see what Apple can come up with for the 8/10th Anniversary edition.

The Note 5 was actually smaller than the Plus, and it had a 5.7" display. Samsung knows how to get the dimensions right on its phones. It was a joy to use, actually :).

If only the rumoured iPhone edition/iPhone 8/ iPhone X had at least 5.5 inches of usable screen.

Bet you there will be a plus model of it.
