I'm a long-time user of Downcast, really love it.

Out of curiosity, what is it about Instacast that makes it worth so much more than Downcast?

So what kind of podcasts do y'all listen to?

Just curious cause I can't find anything interesting...

Downcast here.

Started using it when Apple butchered the music player in iOS5. Sooo glad Apple ruined the music player, I would have ignorantly stuck with the iOS4 player had they not changed it, when Downcast is a million times better and more convenient. Can't believe I physically synced with iTunes for podcasts for so long, uurgh. Downcast is easily amongst my most used apps.

As for podcasts, my faves are (I'm from the UK);

This Is Only A Test
The Vergecast
Guardian Football Weekly
Football Ramble
BBC World Football Phone In
TheGame
Weekend Confirmed
This Week In Tech (video)

There's others, but these are always top of my playlist. Used to like the Engadget podcast until all the crew left for The Verge. Of their replacements, Tim Steven's is very wooden and Brian Heater is the least funny person I've ever had the misfortune to listen too, yet peppers the podcasts with his "jokes". Awful.

I listen to lots of podcasts but have never considered buying an app.

What do these apps do that iTunes doesn't?

I'm tempted by downcast from all the responses here, but it doesn't seem to do anything that I can't do with iTunes.

Cheers

It automatically downloads podcasts direct to your device without your input. The player is much more podcast friendly too, better ui and lots more fine tune controls for podcast playing ie. back/forward 30s, 15s, 2m etc.

I recommend it unreservedly, after a week with this you'll thank the gods you ditched the default music player and never look back.

just bought downcast.

I listen to 4 audio and 3 video podcasts....will be nice to get rid of my daily download/sync with itunes ritual.

ONe question, do these apps somehow download in the background automatically? Or do I have to open the app and refresh my podcast list?

Thanks!

I can't seem to find a podcast app that I like and don't want to pay $1 to $4 with a "hit or miss" strategy. I use Podcaster and Instacast on my iPod. I like Instacast better on the iPod. But on the iPad, I've not found one I really like. Guess I could use the iPod app on the iPad, but it looks like crap.

Any recommendations for a podcast app on the iPad?

Looks like crap? You need it to look nice somehow?

It's the scaling issue I was speaking of, though the iPad 3 is a big improvement vs the iPad 2 or 1, in terms of scaling an iPhone app to the larger screen. It's purely aesthetic.

Thanks to the recommendations here. I got Downcast and its very nice.

There should be a setting in Downcast which controls whether or not you want the app to automatically check and/or download the most recent podcast. I turned both off since I prefer to manually check and stream my podcasts.

downcast for me also. i use it in conjunction with ischeduler (cydia) to have it update automatically every morning before i leave for work.

Downcast is great, and a huge improvement over using iTunes to manage podcasts. You can just stream everything (no large HD video files), or select what podcasts you want to download individually. Sleep timer, set number of episodes for each, playlists, etc.

And I use my iPad more than my iPod for podcasts because at home I listen to them through the speakers rather than headphones. And video podcasts of course.

Downcast! The dev is on these here boards and will answer questions and take feature suggestions.

thanks for this thread.

Purchased Downcast yesterday. It's going to be great not to have to do my morning itunes sync ritual. Now, even if i don't get it done at home I can do via wifi anywhere.

I like that the video player allows you to view at variable speeds up to 3x.

I wish i was able to play my own files with that video player
