Call forwarding has been around longer than cell service, if you are worried about missing a call when away you could always forward your call to another number.. same concept on the iPhone and backup/burner scenario.. I purchased a prepaid yearly plan for $240 and when I go out to a crowded/sketchy area I forward my iPhone number (and wife’s) to the backup which contains no personal information or apps.

Yes but that general type of call forwarding only works between two active line phones (and not sure if bidirectional). Continuity call forwarding is different since it works with an iPhone and a second Apple device that is not an iPhone (Mac, etc), no second line required. So it's a different function.
It's unfortunate Continuity call/SMS forwarding doesn't work with a second iPhone because it might be beneficial to someone who has a spare inactive iPhone they'd like to use as an "iPod touch". The reason I found out it doesn't work between two iPhones is because I wanted to use a small iPhone as my main iPhone when I was out and about, and when I came home I wanted to plug it into a charger and leave it and use a bigger iPhone at home. But not being able to send and receive calls and SMS messages prevented this for me.

A single number on multiple devices has been around quite a long while in some countries …. It’s been available in the UAE for a couple of years. It’s called Multi SIM, I believe you can have 5 SIM with the same number.

Ah I wonder why this hasn't been available in the US (where I am) then. Or at least I haven't been aware of it. You don't have to pay extra monthly, do you?

My cell plan is paid for and it’s a personal phone with business bits installed. An MDM is installed that segregates the business bits from the personal bits. The mdm policy is laid out in MDM root profile block so you know exactly what is being managed, which I have no objection to. I work in a regulated industry.

Some other policies may not be as lenient. But my phone is rated “G” for grand-kids.😎

But heck yeah I would love to have another phone that I can use with my phone number.

Similar with my last employer. I bought the iphone, they added the MDM and transferred me to the phone plan thay had with a carrier. They paid the bill for unlimited business and personal use. Given my job included international travel, it had a global rider for unlimted use anywhere, data and voice.

Sounds like the difference was that it was my personal phone number that moved to their negotiated phone plan. When I left, I kept the number but had to find and transition it to a different phone plan.

I saw how much my department was getting charged montly and it was a surprisingly small flat rate. In a way, it's like health care in that the company negotiated a much better rate then we can on our own.

Are you guys talking about the Continuity forwarding feature? In my experience, call and SMS forwarding are the only two Continuity features that don't work between two iPhones. Other Continuity features work, but the call/SMS forwarding features only work between one iPhone and a non-iPhone Apple device.

In my experience, SMS forwarding also works iPhone-iPhone.

It's the Continuity call forwarding that only works on iPad and Mac.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of iMessage? That of course works on multiple iPhones since it's tied to an Apple account rather than a phone number and sent solely via internet. I'm very sure SMS messages could not be received or sent on my second iPhone the times that I had one. But I haven't had one in years, so maybe it's changed since then. Maybe someone who has two can test. Also I'm not sure if the addition of RCS has changed anything. Maybe RCS messages can be forwarded since they're sent via internet. But I think it's still tied to a phone number so not sure. Maybe someone can test that too.

You know what I think you're right about the secondary iPhone being able to receive SMS messages. I think I clumped that together in my memory with not being able to send (unlike Mac/iPad/iPod which can), since I see them as a both required for messaging. Thanks for the correction.

Ah bummer. It's not much, and at least it's an option (for some carriers), but just annoying to have to pay monthly. It also makes me doubtful that carriers will support the new Apple feature, as they would likely be losing revenue.

Yeah, some are pretty hard core I think. My wife's phone was managed by her hospital, and she was cool with it until the phone updated to 26 overnight without her consent. I guess they can wipe it too. I gave her my iPad mini 7 for work. They can manage that thing all they want. 🙂
