Just what I needed to complete my fantasy.

They want to beat Facebook to it, I guess. If I were to buy/use something like that, I would choose Niantic over Facebook in the blink of an eye.
As a long-time Pokemon Go player (started day 1) I can say I'd rather have neither. Niantic's development is all about revenue, they don't fix QoL bugs even years after acknowledging them, the gameplay is unbalanced and rife with cheating, they mess up their own events regularly, and the only things they fix are bugs that were in the favor of the users.

As an example, recently they changed the time to complete monthly themed events from 6 hours to 3. They said that players had requested that.

This cannot be true. No one asks for less time to complete tasks. You can complete them in however long it takes to grind. For some that's an hour, for some that's 3 for some it's 4. Moving it to 3 hours just get more revenue as people have to buy more items to complete things faster.

Could be that they are being strangled by the license so NEED to get their own product out?
100% absolutely not. They haven't fixed QoL issues that were acknowledged years ago. There's glitching during battle that makes many PvP matches unplayable with drops and stalls. PvP is so bad they had to change this season's battles while they try to figure out how to make it not awful. Gyms are held by spoofers, so regular players can't get on. (They never ever bounce spoofers, even with proof.) There are thousands of examples of these programming-and-management based decisions that have nothing to do with the franchise aspect.

What they probably don't like is paying a share of the revenue in licensing fees.

In 2021 Niantic gave investors a projected number of $900 BILLION dollars. They're not strangled by anything but Niantic.

If you keep playing it they have no reason to fix it.

So is this going to be full of in app purchases where my kid begs me for a fortune to outfit her fake pet?
