I was walking yesterday and saw no less than 20 other people playing in a city park. Ridiculous? No. They were having loads of fun and were talking. I personally walked almost 4 miles before I went home around lunchtime. My feet hurt, but I had gotten more morning sun, fresh air, and exercise than I had in probably a good year.

Yah, that's a good point. I remember when Pokemon first came out. 20 years later, I still can't wrap my brain around what it is, and now we have adults involved! This world is maddening, but in a good way when it's all about fun.

When the history of our times are written, everything will be described as either pre-Pokémon Go or post-Pokémon Go. This is the most revolutionary event of our time.

I don't think there's any easy way to determine what is and isn't private property. Private property is normally determined at a city/town level, and a lot of cities/towns don't publish that kind of information anywhere on the internet. If they do publish it on the internet at all, there's no systematic way of finding it, and once you do find it, it's likely just some kind of PDF map with a legend, not in a format that would be super easy for developers to extract the data from.

Zillow.

"Nintendo reminds users to be aware of their surroundings every time the app is opened, and a few states have issued specific warnings as well, but there have also been some driving-related incidents since the game launched."

oh no,,, ! That just sounds like a bad idea.

the only good thing about all of this is weather,u like it or not, everyone gets excise. However, i would be the guy in the real world pointing at all these people hunting for stuff and laughing out loud.

That depends entirely on the state. Here in Missouri, Castle Doctrine includes your dwelling/residence, your vehicle, or any private property, which includes your yard.

Undoubtedly you need to make some basic attempt to "defend" your yard, say by putting a fence around it. Otherwise, how is anyone to know it is "your yard" and not public right-of-way.

Having played Ingress heavily for a few years... interesting to see most of Niantic's development go to this (Ingress has basically stagnated). All of the old portals are Pokemon Go Stops - the more popular Ingress Portals are gyms. Fun to see people walking around in parking lots with their phones out as others (horrified) try to figure out what they're doing.

I've been kicked off of a college campus (that I was a student at) for playing Ingress because a single male walking around after sun goes down freaks people out. Interesting to see everyone go crazy about this game as if it was the first game to have these "problems." :p Picture a fat middle aged male, smiling, pointing a phone at kids at a playground as parents are dialing 911.

I'm happy for Niantic. I've had a lot of fun playing Ingress and I can only imagine the $ they'll make on this. Having never got into Pokemon as a kid, I don't have much of an attraction. That said, the wife is asking me to go with her everywhere so she can play (she was heavily into it as a kid). More exercise for me!

I am not surprised. No joke, I was on my balcony yesterday and I see this guy walking all over the lot with his phone inches from his face...my guess is, he was playing Pokemon. Ridiculous.
Can't blame that guy. It's part of the game.

i don't get why people look around with their phone. if a pokemon shows up on your map, you just tap it and it will be right in front of you. no looking necessary.

It's a setting - by default it uses the camera to overlay a virtual reality in reality - so you turn around and find the pokemon. You can turn this off and it goes to a cartoonish screen with the pokemon right in front of you (without you having to move).

Edit:

It's the AR Toggle on the top right.

hmm. i've used the augmented default and i have 5 pokemon, every single one has been right in front of my. never had to turn - so i guess it's just coincidence. but i actually think you don't have to. if i remember correctly, i see pokemon, my camera turns on, i move my phone slightly and the pokemon shows up. i think it just randomly generates when you move your phone.

but it is likely coincidence that i just happen to be right in front of them all the time.

How interesting, yeah they're usually in my forward location (iPhone 6s+) though I've only captured a handful total. I imagine if one has a phone that doesn't have that orientation perfect, they'd have to move. I know with my Samsung Note 3, GPS was terrible and all over the place - wonder how tha'd do with this game.

Presumably the game knows who is who and where they are so IDing the perps should be fairly easy. Even if they use stolen phones, their whereabouts ought to be trackable until the phone gets dumped. If this isn't the case nintendo have been negligent schmucks.

From what I've read elsewhere, the points of interest are carried over from the old Ingress game, where people were asked to designate local spots to "claim." They will probably fine tune it over time since Ingress players set up a lot of points of interest such as bars rather than landmarks. I know they are tight with Google so there likely will be adjustments based on Google Maps points of interest in the future.
its a nintendo game so no bars for sure, they are using other poi data. One guy lives in a remodel old church and it became a gym on the game because it used to be a church and many others so my guess its they are using google and others poi which are vast and easy to implement

The point of the game is to go out and walk. No one owes you something just because you want to cheat and drive around to be "faster." The characters in the game and show didn't ride around on a bus. They walked from town to town and saw the world. If that's too much to handle, play something else.

So you need an app and smartphone now just to go out and walk?

I think it should be socially acceptable and encouraged, when approached by someone staring into their phone and being totally oblivious to their surrounding (not seeing you to politely move to the side so you can each pass each other), to slap the phone out of their hands and straight onto the pavement.

I'll be MORE than happy to accoomodate your request if I ever see YOU talking on your cellphone and not looking up...

Of course this happened.

Leave it to humans to ruin and destroy just about anything.

I have several friends very excited about playing this. Sad.

I should add that I used to work on ARG games, so, yeah, this pisses me off.

I installed it and entered game interface, but after reading a few posts in here, I deleted the game.

First and foremost worrisome point: who knows if you need to enter a military base just to get something "extremely rare" in game, or enter other restricted area?

Plus those distracted walking passengers, although I constantly listen to music (and singing what I listen to) while walking.

The intention of this game is obvious, and good. But it needs a lot more work to make it work far better than it's current form. One thing is: adding warning banner on gameplay saying "you need to notice your surroundings while playing game".
