Because afterall she is obviously a wack job!
Put her a way for life!

Put away? NO, MAKE HER DRINK BLEACH!!! thats just insane.

Just idle speculation, but does anyone think the forced drinking of bleach may have been symbolic, in the same sense that some of us had our mouths washed out with soap for dirty language (or whatnot)? Perhaps the girl had engaged in Oral sex?

Just looking for some (twisted) logic to the situation.

Admittedly, the particular manner of asphyxiation defies my understanding. If completely intentional, wouldn't you just use your hands?

Don't get me wrong, this lady deserves stiff penalties, I am just trying to find the method to the madness.

What peverse enjoyment do you, and others on this forum, get from turning almost any story into a political issue?

The woman is obviously insane and religion and politics have nothing to do with it. As difficult as it may be for you to accept, there are both insane lefties and righties, although they themselves probably only see themselves as being *right* - pun intended!

Sadly in this day and age there are people that shouldn't have children. Luckily some of those realize the situation and don't have children. There needs to be a mechanism for weeding out unfit parent. Required child rearing classes would be a good start.

I am sick with hate and sadness. There is no justice on earth for such an act.

China's One Child policy is pretty sad and is an injustice also. This policy actually encourages parents to kill unwanted female babies. Its a terrible policy, every bit as sad as this news is.

i heard people saying that several times. but the few chinese people i know say that's just a rumor. so far i couldn't find any credible source for the claim that the chinese encorage killing of babies. of course nobody would talk openly about that.
do you have any hard numbers that validate this? i only came across rumors that the authorities kill second born babies right a birth. but again i never found facts....

it's very sad anyways...

You just have to look at the population consensus. Boys outnumber girls 3 to 1.

in the country they just leave the babys for nature. of course this has been done since time began. and yeah, just look at the male/female ratio. won't it suck when your famous/rich/good looking in china but can't find a girl because the gov't will eventually consider them a endangered species and keep them all for gov't employees. adoption from other countries like the US help take away a lot of babies each year, but i suspect that this doesn't even make a dent in the total number of girls in china.

Sadly in this day and age there are people that shouldn't have children.

its easy to say things have gotten worse than say, previous decades. most have which is because we wish times were better like before, but it's not true. except in this case. parents need to wake up and take care of their F&*#$ children

Well, now I'm officially ashamed to be from Alabama. We're not all like this, I swear. I'm about an hour west of B'ham too. And yes, this probably was a single parent home. In the bad part of Birmingham.
You don't have anything to be ashamed of; I don't think any reasonable person would leap to the conclusion that killing your children by forcing them to drink bleach and then sitting on them until they suffocate is standard practice in Alabama. ;) And though I believe you're correct about the location of the Wylam neighborhood (West Birmingham, maybe near Fairfield?) I don't think there's an "automatic" association between the two. The sad fact is that this mother is as crazy as an outhouse rat. Regardless of what happens to the mother at this point, I just hope they get the little boy out of there and into some safer environment.

By the way, was there any coverage of this on the Birmingham news over the weekend? I didn't hear anything about it up here (in Huntsville).

Edit: Ah, on further reading I see that the murder actually occurred on November 26, but that the preliminary hearing has just taken place.

A separate story provides some additional details that were omitted from the CNN story:
"She told me that she sat on her chest until she stopped breathing," [Detective Warren Cotton] said.

Jasmine was 5 feet 10 and weighed 240 pounds, while the mother is tall and slender. But the medical examiner ruled that Jasmine died from asphyxia, which is caused by suffocation, and was found dead, on her back, in her bedroom.
So Jasmine was not a petite girl. It sounds suspicious to me that her "tall and slender" mother could have suffocated her by merely sitting on her daughter's chest.

I don't think that it's fair to say that the Chinese government openly encourages killing babies, but economic and other incentives - having more than one child can make finding employment difficult - make it more likely that people will resort to desperate measures. As other people have noted, the country's sex ratio speaks for itself. It's not just infanticide, though - equally disturbing is the availability of very late term (i.e. 6-7 months) abortion. Whatever your position on abortion (and I hope not to turn this into an abortion debate), I think most people would agree that is *awfully* late.

drinking blech can cause damage/swelling to the airways and thus induce suffocation
