Question in general:

I see this come up so often that I have to ask.
Which websites are you people "visiting"? Because you all seem quite paranoid that someone will know you've "been there".

How can they get into banking apps?
Sure they can go to town on many of the other things you've listed, but tell me how you think the thief can get into someone's banking apps without their password/finger ID etc input?

Edit: I'm not recommending to go passwordless, I keep my phone tightly locked. But…

It’s fun thinking like a criminal, by the way

What an absolutely absurd thing to say. Why do you even have a passcode on your phone so? You might not give a **** about privacy, but most of us do.

Do you lock the door to your house when you leave? Why? You don't think someone who wants to get in will find another way, or did you replace all the glass windows and doors with steel plates and biometric locks? I mean, you do give a **** about privacy, right?

Most people put passcodes on their phones not to make them impenetrable, but to keep honest people honest, and to secure their info should they lose their phone. Privacy wingnuts think everyone wants to see their family pictures...or is there other things on the phone they don't want seen?

I disabled all security check on my Iphone. With no passwords, no Face ID, I'm saving so many seconds and if I forget my phone somewhere it can be easily returned to me.
My private data is not worse than average and I have nothing to hide.
With my "unsecured" Iphone 6s, I have a faster reaction time than any 2018 Iphone with Face ID on.

Yeah, but if I found your phone I don’t want to unintentionally your indecent material. My mental health is more valuable to me then finding your insecure phone. Do us all a favour a put a 1234 passcode.

Most citizens are not criminals and the few that are have already found workarounds. There are foolish criminals too, so.

Someone stole a bike out of my garage, and now I’ve got cameras surrounding the house. Security requires layers.

It’s also true of a passcode. There is a thin veneer of difference in the US ... You probably aren’t supposed to be compelled to provide a password, but if there is probable cause that you own the phone and it contains evidence of a crime, you can be forced to.

I don't believe that's true; being able to remain silent if you choose to.

What if Apple could do like an encrypted backup in the cloud... then when you cross borders your phone could be brand new with nothing on it and they check whatever they want and once the checking is over, you only have to type in your encryption password and it will download everything from the cloud?

What if your phone is in the luggage, do they look through your luggage and ask you to open your bags and switch on your phone?
Apple already has it. It's called iCloud backup.

The most stupidest post I have read in ages. No offence

You would be jailed in contempt of court. So you could remain silent but it wouldn’t buy you freedom.

Correct, though I suppose with contempt they can’t hold you forever (at some point it becomes a fourth amendment issue, though it can be a long time).

This is why dropping TouchID was seriously short sighted on Apple's part.

There needs to be an option to require FaceID -AND- TouchID and if only one is attempted or verified, then require the user to enter their passcode.

You THINK you have nothing to hide. Do you sleep with all doors unlocked in your home?

Huh? How does touchid solve anything? If a court orders you to provide your fingerprint you have to do it. Same as making you look at the phone.

Pursuant to your rights accorded to in the 5th amendment, you have to the right to not answer any questions that may lead to self-incrimination. With-holding your password I believe falls under that.

Face ID has only been out a year, less than a year actually.

How often does this really come up? I mean are there that many situations where “bad people” using expensive new iPhones are trying to lock law enforcement out?
Well, the story about the child sex offender certainly showcases a “bad person” (and child sex offenders are evil—not sure why you would put quotes around the phrase bad people) securing a phone with FaceId. This is going to be an ongoing issue and it’s nieve to think law enforcement wouldn’t be trained on how to deal with the latest iPhone security

Which I believe violates recent federal court rulings stating the civilians cannot be compelled to hand over their passwords.
Nope. This link was to a federal appeals court case. The theory is that it isn’t compelling you to testify against yourself if it’s a foregone conclusion that the device does belong to you and contains incriminating information. By providing your passcode you aren’t being forced to admit the phone is yours, because we already know the phone is yours.

Of course, but that has no relevance to contempt of court.

And how will they know the phone even has this evidence, without being able to access its contents?

Not forever but they can delay it long enough to not make it worthwhile.

I think you forgot to mention the element, apparently required, that the Government already knew the contents of the device.
