Thanks all. I really appreciate everyone's time in voting and/or commenting. Very interesting results; a huge majority for carry-in-front pocket. The thing that seems to make that practical for a lot of people who also added comments though is that a lot of front-pocket-users take their phone out of their pocket when they sit down.
I don't drive any more so if I travel I am on public transport and when I'm out and about I am usually in a public place so I really don't think that taking my phone out of my pocket every time I sit down would work for me.
I'm delighted with my iPhone 6s anyway (just upgraded from a 5) so I think I'll wait to see what happens to the dimensions when all the 7/7+/7-something-else models come out next year. It sounds as if the current Plus model is very close to being permanently front-pocketable so if Apple went totally edge-to-edge 5.5" screen next year and maybe cut the height a bit as well those extra few mm shaved off the height and width might just tip the balance but would want to see it in person first.
