I sometimes use the iPad camera to take photos of small parts. It works well for this purpose. I don't think a flash would be very helpful. It creates too much glare and reflection. Better to make yourself a light hood of some sort. Depending on the size of the objects you photograph, get a largish, white plastic bowl and cut a small hole in the bottom. Invert this over the object and photograph through the hole. Bring a desk lamp close to the bowl if you need more light. In a pinch you could fashion a diffuser like this out of a couple of sheets of paper and scotch tape. You want soft, diffuse light, not the pinpoint source you get from an LED flash. Try Cortex Cam. It averages a large number of pictures to remove noise in images taken in dim light. It compensates for camera shake so you can use it hand held.

The current iPads take good pictures in good light, especially daytime. As soon as the light levels drop i.e. indoors or dusk, the quality just drops right off. LED lighting just doesn't make up the difference enough for me to want to use the iPad in these situations. You could argue that having the LED light may mean the difference between getting a pic or not but if it was that critical a picture, I wouldn't be using the iPad to start with and I will always have my iPhone on me anyway.
In short, I'm ambivalent if the iPad gets LED lighting or not.

I seldom take pics with my iPad, so I don't care about its camera system.
The most important camera is the one on the front for facetime calls and it doesn't need flash.

Never use the flash on my iPhone unless I desperately have to so I would be even less likely to use it on an iPad. Also, would you really like to look like one of the ****tards using a tablet to take photos at a sporting event? Would be even worse with a flash, picture them, holding the tablet in portrait to take pictures the wrong way and then using a flash which is too far away to make any difference... Omfg

I hardly ever use the camera on mine, but I wouldn't be opposed to having one. I don't understand why someone wouldn't want additional features. Just don't use it.

Drives the price up, less room for other internal components (like the battery). All things being equal sure, I'd take a flash over no flash. If it mean paying more or having shorter battle life I'd say no, though.

It should of had a flash since day one.
That's only one opinion, which is not shared by all users.
You say you don't use the camera, or have not yet, so in that case a small flash unit next to the camera is a non issue to you.

So why would anyone, say there should not be a flash?
Because the OP asked for opinions. One opinion is just as valid as another.
Why would anyone in their right mind want a product to be WORSE than it otherwise could be?
Again, it's only one opinion that it would make it worse. Obviously, there are many who feel it is better as it is.
It does not make any logical sense to not want one there.
Just because you don't agree doesn't make a differing opinion illogical. Go back and read the OP's question, which is: "How imporant is LED flash on iPad for you?" By definition, it will be important for some and not for others. What's really illogical is to criticize the very opinions that the OP asked for in this thread.
I just find it annoying that we have many people on these forums that think that because they don't use something, it should not be there.
This thread is specifically asking for opinions, which are naturally going to vary among users. It's certainly not worth getting annoyed over.
I totally understand if the product would be made worse in some way.
Some feel it may.
Like a second speaker, for stereo, or a flash unit, or a SD car slot to read photo's of your camera, or an IR blaster to allow thousands to control their TV's and music systems. There is no negative in having many things.
For some those may be negatives. Some wouldn't want additional features that would compete for space or battery power or alter the design or price, especially if those features aren't used. For example, I don't want an SD card slot taking up space and altering the smooth design on the iPad. I've never used that feature, even on computers. I do recognize that some do use it and would prefer it. That's why there are differences in opinions.

It is completely appropriate and on-topic for people to express their opinions in answer to the OP's question. It is not realistic to expect to agree with all such opinions.

As for me, I don't take pictures with the iPad. I take them with my iPhone and they sync to the iPad, where I can edit, email or do other things with them. The iPhone is a more natural feel for me in taking pics.

I have little need or use for one. I'm content without having it.

I can agree the iPad may not be the 1st choice for the majority of people when it comes to selecting a device to take a photo with.

However I feel everyone would accept that the best camera is the one you have to hand at the moment you wish to capture a shot.

Any camera is better than no camera.

I picture the scene, which is quite a reasonable scene. You are sat at home in the evening, the lighting is dim as very few want to relax in the evening under bright lighting.

Perhaps sitting next to your partner watching the TV. Perhaps adverts are on, or you are not wanting to watch the 18th re-run of Dallas she's hooked on.

You are using the iPad to surf the web, or use an app.

Something happens, your dog goes crazy, you child stands up and starts making funny faces, perhaps a weird insect has just flown in the room, or anything unexpected.

You press the home button, camera up on the iPad and take the photo of the event, meanwhile she's still fumbling through her bad for the iPhone or rushing out to the kitchen where she left it on charge.

Dam she's missed the shot, but hey, you have the shot as the iPad was in your hands, and it's always being used by one of you in the evenings quite often.

You look at the photo, well, bit grainy and not much detail. Dam, wish it had a flash unit :(

LED flash on iPad not at all important to me. Haven't used the camera on my iPad since I got my iPod Touch 5, but even when I did use it, my photos came out fine without a flash.

You took photo's in a dimly lit room and they came out fine?

I can see a (very limited) use case for it, but it would probably add unnecessary cost and weight for something that probably wouldn't benefit 95% of iPad users.

That doesn't mean the other 5% are irrelevant, it just means that their niche use cases aren't enough to justify modifying a product for everyone.

Would not be useful. In fact, it would probably look ugly. I'd hope Apple would spend their time on more useful features.

I never take pictures on the ipad however. The iPhone has a better camera, I'll stick with that for taking photos since it is so much more convenient.

I didn't say that. I said that when I used my iPad for photos, they came out fine without a flash. Some where taken indoors, some outdoors.

So for the photo's where a flash was not needed, you did not need a flash.

hmmmmmm.....

Actually I don't think coats are needed either as I only go outside when it's hot!

I'm neutral on the topic. But I do use my iPad rear camera all the time. I take pics and videos of my grandkids. They love seeing the pics and videos immediately on the big screen of the iPad. (Yes, like most kids they are real hams).

So having a flash at times would have been nice (especially at Christmas when the lights are really low) but it's not a deal maker or breaker for me. My pics are mostly for immediate laughs and fun. And as for the future, well, whether grainy or dim doesn't matter, they bring back memories and that's all that matters. Guess I'm just not so particular.

Why are you being so argumentative over opinions posted here that don't meet with your approval?

What makes you think a flash is required for an indoor photo? If the indoor area has good natural light, no flash is required.

Get over yourself.

Some crazy notion I have that a camera designed for general use should have a flash along side it.
You know, like Cameras have has since back in the Laurel and Hardy days where the best they had was flash powder.
I've owned many camera's that took many types of film over the years, even black and white, multi frame, manual wind on, thru Film SLR's and then onto digital, and then phones, and you know what...... A flash unit was either build in, or pluggable into every single one of them.

Why? Perhaps because it needs to be there for any general use device that takes a photo.

Or was everyone in the history of photography wrong, and Apple are right?

Why are you so fixated on expecting the iPad to be a replacement for a SLR, DSLR or other camera? If you're that worried about the camera and flash aspect, you will likely be more satisfied buying something designed exclusively for that function, such as a camera. Even with my iPhone, I rarely find a need to use the flash indoors.
