Why are you so fixated on expecting the iPad to be a replacement for a SLR, DSLR or other camera? If you're that worried about the camera and flash aspect, you will likely be more satisfied buying something designed exclusively for that function, such as a camera. Even with my iPhone, I rarely find a need to use the flash indoors.

I'm not fixated :)
I'm simply saying any general purpose device that has a camera on it, and is designed to be used at any time should naturally have a flash.
It's not really an opinion it's just totally obvious and logical it should have as that's what goes alongside a camera lens. A flash to illuminate the scene when it's too dark for a clear image to be captured.

The iPad will have a flash.
Some time after a flash gets fitted and people are used to the iPads having flash's for years, it will seem idiotic to want to remove it.

And please don't think I'm making this point as I think you should use the iPad's for taking pictures all the time, though if you do and you like it, then great :)
I am again saying the best camera, is the one you have in your hand at the moment you wish to take the shot.
If you have the iPad in your hand and something happens NOW you want the best you can get from the device you have.

We could a few years ago been having the same argument about a Camera on a mobile phone and people here seem to be the type who would of said OMG what a stupid idea a camera on a phone! what an idiot. If you want to take a picture then take your camera with you like any normal person does.

But no one seems to be saying that now.

It really is your opinion, though.

You think it is logical and obvious that all cameras should have flash, but it must not have been obvious to someone at Apple, because if all people agreed with you, then the iPad will have had a flash from the beginning. Since not everyone agrees on this, then what we have are opinions.

I agree that if someday iPads do get flash, then I'd probably use it from time to time. But taking pictures with an iPad isn't an important part of my iPad usage to begin with, so whether or not it has a flash to improve any pictures I take with it is of even less importance. If it comes with flash, I won't complain, but if it doesn't, well... It just isn't a big deal to me.

It is far more useful than you think.

I use my iPad to catalog items and put stuff up for eBay (among other things).
The big screen makes editing the image and typing up descriptions far easier than on an iPhone.

However the big iPad causes shadows, and using separate lights will cause sideways shadows because the light is not right next to camera, let alone the hassle of setting up light.

I know, some of you will say use iPhone to take picture and wait the 2 to 5 min to upload into photo stream.
Really? I don't have the time to wait.

The iPad is about ease of use and convenience, and having LED flash makes it just more convenient and easy to use.

I mean, I wouldn't complain; but I can't exactly say that I've been jonesing for this feature...

I do kind of chuckle when I see the big square shadow in pictures on ebay, craigslist, etc made by someone holding an iPad above the object they are taking a picture of. I've even seen faint shadows and obvious flashlight beam lighting up the object pictured. I can't help but wonder how many people were used in the production of those pictures. lol

I occasionally use scanner pro on my iPad to scan documents. A flash would be useful here, to get rid of those shadows which invariably crop up. :)

Would be nice to use as a flashlight at times but don't take too many photos with an ipad.

Honestly, I'd prefer to bring my own flashlight. A maglite is ever so much more wieldy than an iPad. I love the iPad as a content consumption device, but it's not meant to be a Swiss army knife.

LED was in context of taking pictures, not as a flash light....

That would be a nice feature to have, but overall, it's not gravely important to me.

With more responses where brief and too point like this. :)

Don't think it needs a flash, let alone a rear camera.

Which is fine.
Not everyone uses every feature on their device, or all the time.
I tend to use everything the iPad has often enough.

I can see a (very limited) use case for it, but it would probably add unnecessary cost and weight for something that probably wouldn't benefit 95% of iPad users.

That doesn't mean the other 5% are irrelevant, it just means that their niche use cases aren't enough to justify modifying a product for everyone.

Seems the demand is abou5 24%.

As for cost, likely less than $1, maybe even less than $0.50. For a $400+ device, it is negligible cost.

I suppose why could try this one.

A device that is made for taking a photograph.

(The camera on the iPad)

Is this device made better/more flexible/able if is has a flash along side it, or is it made worse, less able if it has a flash along side it?

If it is made better, and there are no downsides to it's inclusion (perhaps 50 cents) as near to zero weight, and no impact on space.

Then why not?

With the iPad's battery size, a flash LED used in flashlight mode would probably run for DAYS with the screen off.

I can see that being useful when the apocalypse comes.

Other than that, since I never take important photos with my iPad, I don't really need an LED flash. I wouldn't be opposed to one being there though.

Would be great to have occasionally, my old 2011 Samsung Galaxy Tab10.1 had a flash, came in handy very now and then. Not a must have but I'd like Apple to put it in.

Anything that will limit the idiots from holding up their iPad at a school function, aquarium, sporting event, etc... to totally block your view, is greatly encouraged.

NOT having a flash is Aces in my book.

No flash. I'd rather not encourage MORE people to take photos with tablets. I was recently on vacation earlier this month and I couldn't believe how many people were stopped and taking pictures with tablets.
